Wow, I am never short of amazed. Jenn, is this not super far stretched? What makes you think that those that move out of LI live "in the middle of nowhere".  I just don't get it...it's not defeat (at least not for me and those I know left and are happy) it's triumph! It's a way out of a crazy situation. It's achieving home ownership regardless and if it means exploring other paths, then that's the way to do it. Like others (including myself) have said not everyone can leave (family and friends aren't always luckily in other states) so you do what you have to. But that doesn't make it (owning a home) less wonderful when it happens just because it's out of LI.
I for one live in a major metropolitan city...not NY, but not Fargo either.
again...i do not consider it a "defeat"
i consider it a choice...
i have that choice..
a good friend of mine moved to PA...in the middle of no where...
she bought a 3 story house that was less than my 1 bedroom condo when i bought it 4 years ago..
her choice...and it was a great move..
my choice to stay here
again...i do not look down on anyones choices for themselves

I think we are getting a little too nit-picky over definitions of words.
1. The level of respect at which one is regarded by others; standing.
2. A person's high standing among others; honor or esteem.
3. Widely recognized prominence, distinction, or importance: a position of prestige in diplomatic circles.
look at #2 - its a person's high standing AMONG others, not in someone elses eyes - so comparing someone who owns a home on LI compared to someone who rents...one might say that the homeowner has more prestige.
and then take someone who bought a home on LI compared to another, less expensive place. One person may think that the LI homeowner has more prestige, some may not. its all in the eyes of the beholder.

BUT, i also have a different concept of what *I* consider to be prestigious.
I used to think that having a luxury car, big house, etc... were considered Prestigious.... Until I got the whole picture. I know people who have a mercedes and work jsut to pay off their car, b/c they see it as a sign of 'prestige'... they also have debt out the wah-zoo. I see people buy houses that they canNOT afford, because there's such a craze right now for 'home ownership'. I reserve the term Prestigious for things such as reaching a monumental place in your career, receiving an award for some major contribution to society.... not for being able to find a loan officer to be able to figure out a system to make it possible for you to get a mortgage (as most people Have to do these days). Yes, its an accomplishment, but No, i don't think it makes someone More honorable because they did it on LI instead of somewhere else in the country. imo.

that is exactly what i have been saying...
that what one person considers "presitigious"
for me: owning a home, graduation from college, getting my masters
maybe be different form what someone else considers presitigious..
and i too think that homeownership...in and of itself is PRESTIGIOUS...
here, there, anywhere....
ETA...and i certainly do not look down at others for not doing what i have done...
Nor do i not consider what they did equally prestigious...

i, honestly, would not feel that way.
that is all up to YOU...
i am sure there are people who live in hempstead who feel quite prestigious to live there

i think that is an amazing achievement in a persons life
ETA...a friend of mine JUST bought a home in Elmont for 400K
he most definitely considers that prestigious
and regardless of what people may or maynot think of a town...even what I MAY think of a town..
HOME OWNERSHIP IS MOST CERTAINLY an accomplishment...and something that people should have some pride in

please read my post again...
many many people on here and on LI look down on the town of Elmont..
my good friend just ought there last month
and i was VERY happy for him and his gf...
he is 50 plus years old and this is his first house....something he worked extremely hard to get...
i am nothing short than happy for him...

I am just saying that many people grew up in those neighborhoods and would not like it if you put them down.
Perfect ex...a while ago, most people would consider Coram a negative...due to the school district. I know many people who are moving to COram now because it is more affordable. I predict a major turn around for that neighborhood in a few years.

i don't know anything at all about Wyandanch, so i can't comment on that, but most of Hempstead IS bad. DH is armed for his job, and there are still places (like Terrace) in hempstead that they are not supposed to go because of the activity that goes on there (many shootings- even in the middle of the day, etc...) I dont see that as judgemental- its based on the crime report.
i dont think of Elmont as ANYTHING like that- i don't see the comparison there.

i brought up my friend when it was asked would i think it is prestigious if someone lived in a bad area of LI

I think anyone who has saved and sacrificed to buy a home, should be proud. Whether they purchased on LI or in Missouri. They should feel a huge sense of pride and accomplishment...because it IS a huge accomplishment. It is the American dream, no? ;)
Do I think it's prestigious? If you've plunked down $2 million on a house, I'd say there is a certain level of prestige to go with that - again, regardless of whether you purchased on LI or another state. Personally I don't consider any of the towns people have mentioned on this thread (in LI) to be prestigious...but that's my opinion.
The answer to this question is based solely on opinion so no one is wrong or right. Hopefully going forward people will be more aware of what they're saying and use more tact in how they present their opinion.

I think it is an accomplishment to own a home no matter where you buy..Ofcourse if someone is able to spend millons on a home in a great area (whether it be LI or somewhere else) I think that is prestigious...also everyone has different priorities..some pple rather live elsewhere and enjoy their money in other ways besides a hefty mtg and tax payment..i.e. shopping,vacations,nice cars,etc.
I know pple that used to live on LI and have moved and now they get to enjoy a bigger house in a great area plus alot of the extras that pple on LI can't afford (so they dont want to ever come back) because most of us here are working just to pay the bills and cant indulge in much else.

I totally agree with this. The areas that are considered "less desirable" right now are going to see a major turnaround in the very near future because this is where homes are "affordable." There will be many different kinds people moving into these areas - and they will become very diverse, wonderful places to live. Well, this is what I see in my crystal ball, anyway.

You nailed it Beth. The example you gave is renting vs. owning. The "prestige" is being a homeowner, not necessarily one in LI. I think saying "I own" fills us with pride as opposed to "I rent" but it has nothing to do with the area where the house is purchased. It's just buying a house, period.
And I'm not saying anything about renting because I did so for many years and my friends in NY still do. It's pretty damn hard to buy. Period.
