Do you believe that there is a level of prestige
that comes along with owning a house on LI (or the NY metro area)?

Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige
of course. its alot harder to do here than other places in the country.
If FH and I moved to the south - i wouldnt have to work and we could buy a huge brand new house.

Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige
I think so too.
DH's cousin, his wife and kid just moved from LA back to OH. they couldn't afford to buy a house and were renting for $2600 a month!
I told DH that I couldn't help but see that as a “defeat” and that they probably feel like crap that they had to move back home. I think that was a turning point for me... seeing that happen. I told him that if and when we buy a house here, all his relatives in OH can stop placing bets on whether we're going to move there
I would rather be homeless than live near his family

I do- but I don't think people in other parts of the country know what it takes to "make it here" - and when they move to NY or LA- they find out real quick

that's the opposite of how it happened with DH's grandparents. they lived in Brooklyn after moving from Italy. my MIL was even born here. for some reason, they moved to OH

in his cousin's defense, they lived in LA for 8 yrs. so they really tried.

i agree. I think its an example of Cognitive Dissonance, honestly. Homeownership (in any part of the country) is a great thing, but at the expense of what you have to sacrifice here- there's really nothing prestigous about it at all to me. jmho.

EXACTLY...home ownership is a great thing ...
I personally think it is a matter of opinion... IMO an achievement of owning a home on LI is in fact something i am extremely proud of and i consider prestigious...TO ME.
some people do not look at being here and doing what it takes to be here as a "sacrifice" at all...
Do i think it is hard...yea.
But homeownership can be hard whether you are here or in Utah...
Do i think it is harder here...yep.
And IMO anything that is harder to attain and to accomplish....well it is prestigious...at least to me
hardwork and sacrifice really doesn't make something less prestigious...

Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige
We have owned our home for 10 years but I still work as our taxes are still high as our other bills. We would never be able to afford an apt. let alone a house now.

Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige
Not really- I think it's all relative. DH and I would probably make less in another part of the US, but we'd still probably be able to afford a nicer house than what we have. I don't see anything prestigious about having to buy something overpriced.
It also seems like a good number of people had to really stretch themselves in order to be able to buy their houses, and have to go without vacations, etc to be able to afford it. Again, nothing prestigious in that.

I agree with this totally. As Redhead said as well it's prestige/accomplishment no matter what/where you buy.
We chose to move out of LI so that I could be the one to raise our children, live comfortably- have money in the bank, go on vacations whenever, have investments and so forth. We would will never know if we 'could make it' on LI since we choose to never find out. I don't believe in being somewhere to see 'if' you can make it somewhere.
Why live for your home and taxes, kwim? **this is just my opinion based on our experiences and not so for others.

I didn't mean them as an example- just in general
it's tough- and like some people pointed out if you are to scrafice so much- is it worth it? but that is matter of person perference

I dont think you could say its ''prestige'' Long Island is just expensive and not all of it is nice. It would be prestigious to live in Bel Air or Greenwich. JMO

I agree, I think people who live here, for the most part, live here because they have family and don't want to leave. I don't believe the working class buys here for prestige...

right! the Hamptons (some of it) would fall into that catagory, impo. If we had millions sitting in the bank and wanted a summer second home that is where it would be- only because we have family there, otherwise pick any island

Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige
Maybe not prestige..that may not the right word. I'm proud of being a homeowner and being able to afford it here. I do work my butt off as many do, but LI is a desirable place to live as is many areas surrounding the NY Metro area.
I'm proud that we could do it and be able to enjoy what the area has to offer.
I guess the right word is pride. I agree though, homeownership no matter where you are is an accomplishment, but just one of the many that we will all have in our lives.

I think there is a level of pride that comes with owning a home, especially on LI.

I agree!
I think that home ownership Anywhere in the country is something to be proud of- but, like gerty said, i think many of us stay here because of family, friends, and other ties- not because LI is such a prestigous place to be.

Agreed. Now being able to own a home in Huntington Bay, Cold Spring Harbor or Malba may qualify you for prestigious.
Otherwise, it is indicative that you were either given a giant helping hand or that you sacrificed your a$$ off!
