Another fence & neighbor situation
when we had a new fence installed, we informed all 3 neighbors when we were doing it. sometimes they fence people need to step over the property line. as for the shared tree, whose tree exactly was it?
and there is "fence etiquette" good side usually faces the neighbors

if your home is nice and you are adding a fence why wouldn't you want the nice side facing out, otherwise whats the point, adding a fence also adds to the appeal of a your home.

In my town the good side - which means the smooth side - must face the neighbors. If you want a smooth side facing your own house, also, you have to put up a fence with two smooth sides.

We had a pretty shoddy stockade fence that was barely keeping our dogs in. We got it replaced last year. Told all of our neighbors on three sides when we were doing it so they knew. Do you know my one neighbor had the nerve to tell me she didn't want a white fence?! I did not ask anyone for $$ nor would I ever. The stockade was mine to replace. You can't please everyone - just do what you want
Well she obviously had no fence in the first place so she can put a stockade in front of the white on her side. We will have the same situation next year. I thought about if they would care if one side was white and their other 2 were wood. Oh well.

My parents just had thier fence redone and one of their neighbors had the gall to tell the fence guys as they were installing the fence to put the "nice" side facing her property. AND THEY DID! So now my parents have 3 side of smooth fence and one side of the posts showing! I was so mad for them but shes luck my dad and mom are pretty easy going but can you imagine the b****s on that woman! Ugh! I would tell her that she is always welcome to install a fence of her property of her liking in front of yours.
Yes, the woman next door has some major balls but this is the fence companies fault. Why the hell would you listen to the requests of someone who isn't the customer?!?! Boggles my mind. If I were your parents, I'd call the fence company, tell them what happened and demand at least a partial refund. Ridiculous.
You have to give your neighbors the "good" side .
Yes. They should have done this all around.

Again, NO you do not. You do not have to give your neighbors the good side in every town. Some yes, some no.

The point of the fence for a lot of people is for the privacy. I would put the fence that people see from the street with the good side out but then again I would get something a little more decorate where both sides look the same. Down the sides and back of my yard, good side facing in. If the neighbor doesn't like it then they can always split the cost of the fence or put up their own.

She writes me back and says that she wishes we had spoken to her and her husband first (as if to take in to consideration their preference). She made no mention of wanting to contribute financially (which I would not expect her to).
So, if I pay for a new fence 100%, I'm expected to ask my neighbors likes / dislikes first?
I thought they would be appreciative that we were replacing the fence in the first place.
I take it as maybe she was interested in splitting the cost or paying the difference to get a different fence that you both would like.
My peach of a back yard neighbor put up a stockade with the bad side facing us. It totally wouldn't of mattered, but he did such a crappy job. He wound up adding metal poles to support his lopsided fence. He then had the nerve to question us replacing our existing chain link fence with a PVC one. I guess he realized his fence was hideous and took it down...lol.
When I called our town they said it doesn't matter which side faces in/out.
