Re: Tacky or not?

As someone who takes the time to write out each thank you and acknowledge what's given, I feel it's very poor etiquette not to. I don't really have the extra time to write them out but I feel if you have the time to arrange the party, send out invites, then you have the time to write thank you cards.
I've gotten them attached to favors and I don't like it personally. I also dislike the generic typed ones I've received a few times now. I'm was raised to follow etiquette though and I'm seeing that it's a fading art.
This exactly.

not tacky but I also hate thank you cards. they are such a waste of paper and time. they get thrown out if not right away eventually (unless its a photo one I tend to keep them)I have already thanked you for coming to the party when you arrived, thanked you again for the gift and then probably thanked you again when you left ... at of all those thank yous a person really needs me to mail them another thank you to say the same thing again!!! and how people find it rude to not get a thank you for kid party is beyond me.
the only exception I make is if someone sent a gift and didn't make it to the party. I then will send a thank you out.
for DD 4th bday I attached a label inside the pizza box favor that had some pizza type poem thing thanking them for coming to the party.
ITA!
Also, many schools won't allow their classrooms to be used as a Post Office, so you can't just put notes in cubies, or distribute things in class.

Re: Tacky or not?
I did thank you's in DS's last favor. Never even thought it would be tacky.
I did write a very corny poem, so it was not pre-printed, or generic. It was all about our son and fit the theme of his party.
If people though it was tacky, oh well. At least I tried! I know plenty of people who don't even bother.

Tacky or not?
Not tacky. I would never think twice if I got something like this. To be honest, I am very good at writing thank yous, but unless it was for a significant gift like a wedding, baby/bridal shower, or a religious event, I would probably forget about it and never realize that I didn't get a thank you.

Re: Tacky or not?
I am a thank you card kind of person. This is not my usual MO but when I asked the teacher to hand out the invites in school, I could tell she was not too pleased. I think for Ty cards she might kill me!
So based on the replies, I think I'm going to do a written thank you for the school kids and then everyone else will get one mailed home.
Solves the formal thank you side of me and solves the class issue!

Re: Tacky or not?
I am not a fan of this personally but not the worst thing you could do. I think a personal thank you is preferable. But it's better than none.

Tacky or not?
I don't even remember if I get a Thank you after a party. They are a waste of money and go in the garbage. I wish we weren't a society that got offended if people didn't send them. With that said. I like this idea, and may use it in the future. Who cares how a Thank you is given. If you are sitting by your mailbox waiting for a Thank you, you have too much time on your hands.

Tacky or not?
I don't know if I would call it tacky but like someone else said I'm the type that writes out very personal thank you's addressing playdates or the actual gift received. I HATE writing thank you's but to me the general ones is so impersonal. And how can you thank someone for coming or for a gift if you don't know what the gift is.

Re: Tacky or not?
I've always been the person to send thank you's out but honestly, I'm starting to see it as pointless in this day and age. At least for little things like a kids bday party. Years ago, aside from a phone call, sending a letter or card was really the only way to communicate with someone. But with social media, texting, email, etc. I feel like hand written thank you's are falling by the wayside. And I don't think it's a bad thing, there are other ways to say thank you.
When we have birthday parties for the kids they say thank you after they open the gift, they thank everyone again once all the gifts are opened, then after everyone leaves I always send out a text or email thanking everyone for coming and for being so generous. And then I usually mail out thank you's too. But really, it's SO redundant. Thank you was said THREE times before the card was even mailed out, and realistically...............is someone any more thankful for a gift because they wrote out the exact gift they received?
Unless it's a wedding or some big, formal expensive event I think any form of thank you is thank you enough.

Re: Tacky or not?
I don't think its a big deal for classmates, but for family, close friends, etc, I would have the kids do their own thank yous.
I think writing thank you notes are such a kind, important gesture. My mom always made us write our own, even when were were two and just scribbled lines. I think it helps to teach kids to be thankful.

in reality who cares what the gift is. I am thankful you got me a gift I don't need to know what exactly it is to be thankful. No matter what it is my thank you is not going to change, even if I love it or hate it.
and now people write out thank yous for playdates I guess people are really going to think I am rude if that's the case but that's ok I have no problem with that

Honestly I think it's fine. The last couple of parties my kids attended we never received a thank you.....that I find tacky.

Tacky or not?
While I'm not a huge fan of generic thank you notes and would much rather a handwritten, personalized one, I'd take a generic one over not receiving one every day of the week. IMO it's super tacky when people don't send thank you notes for events. If you have time plan an event, send out invites, etc. you have time to send thank you notes. Party etiquette (or lack thereof) boggles my mind. I've not received thank you notes for birthday parties, showers, and yes, even weddings! Crazy to me.

I didn't mean I write out the thank you for a playdate. I just make it personal. "Thank you so much for the train set. "LO's name" loves playing with it. Hope we can set up a playdate soon. Love, "our names".
The poster asked a question and I was just writing what I do and I wouldn't call it tacky but personally I don't like the standard "thanks for the gift" before you even get the gift. What if I was a guest and couldn't afford to give a gift and now you are thanking me for something I didn't give? I would feel TERRIBLE about that. It's a personal answer, that's all I gave.
