If you didn't give rice cereal as first food
What did you give and how did you portion it? My dr is insisting we start with rice cereal and then adding barley or oatmeal for iron and fiber content but I've heard a lot of people starting with other things. I want to get educated as much as possible before decided...starting him in three weeks. TIA!

avocado. I don't see why it would matter what you start with. Food before 1 is only for practice. They are getting all their nutrition from formula or breast milk. Edited to add I didn't really portion it. I gave her what she wanted and ate the rest lol.

Yep avocado then sweet potato.
I did do some barley cereal and oatmeal, but he was never a fan, just skipped rice.

I mentioned avocado and he right away said no he has to have rice cereal. So hard to find a doctor who is open minded. I switched to his practiice bc my former doc wouldnt separate shots. Now this new battle about food with this guy. Luckily I can make my own decision on this one...

We skipped rice because, in my opinion, it is garbage. We started with oatmeal. We moved on to vegetables pretty soon thereafter.

Many doctors suggest avoiding avocado and banana for first foods bc they are know to be allergenic. Dd allergist and pediatrician recommends starting with orange vegetables then green veggies. He said to introduce oatmeal around seven months and then wheat cereal. He said that there is no reason to feed rice cereal bc it is just "filler" with minimal nutritional value.

we started with oatmeal as per my ped's suggestion (she's not a fan of rice cereal) and once he did well with that we quickly moved on to fruits and veggies.

Thanks everyone...Dh and I really dont want to do rice cereal so this is really helpful. The other thing I found was odd was he said to start it in the evening. I thought it should be morning or afternoon. What did you all do?

You can start with anything you want and any meal you want. I did night because DS was in daycare and wanted to be able to feed him at first.

Never did rice cereal, did oatmeal and then moved on to fruits & veggies. I didn't introduce avocado until close to 1 year.

We never did rice for DD and only did oatmeal for a few days. I think we started with acocado and sweet potatoes.

Probably because it would help keep them full longer so then they'd sleep longer without waking.

We started with avocado, sweet potato, banana, squash. No cereal for months, and only did oatmeal. Rice has little nutritional value and can be quite constipating.
This is one of those topics that Peds will greatly differ on and usually the older the doctor the more likely they are to push rice cereal.

My doctor told us to avoid rice, oatmeal and grains. She suggested to start with all orange colored veggies. Yams, sweet potato, and butternut squash. However I started with avocado and banana. Just a tiny bit mashed and thinned with breast milk. This was at 6mos. Then I moved on to sweet potato.
I found www.wholesomebabyfoods.com to be great for recipes and also what to introduce what month.

We started with sweet potato, went through all veg then all fruit. Then we added oatmeal to thicken the fruits and veg. We tried rice but they didnt like it and it was binding. It's just learning at this point. We started solids at 5.5 mo, oatmeal around 6 and by 10 they were on table food and refused purée

Our ped advised against the grains/cereals too. I think with my DD I started with avocado and DS sweet potato. The website listed by PP is very helpful.

I started with Organic multi-grain cereal and apples, then banana. I then switched to oatmeal cereal and another organic grain before starting another normal rotation. I didn't do rice until a few months later. Good luck! Solids are fun!

We just started oatmeal until she gets the hang of it. I plan to do vegis next but rice I found dd#1 didn't like and I hear it's binding so we just went to oatmeal.
Every ped is different. I'm in a practice with 5 doctors and they all say different things. One said no milk but yogurt was OK and one said no dairy period till 1yr. Who knows. Go with what works for you.

I did rice one time with each of my children and both never liked it. So I used oatmeal and barely, then introduced fruits and veggies.
