Starting food, rice cereal, etc
Dd is 4 months today and we have a pedi appt so I will talk to him. It he is more old school (his kids are in their 20s).
Why did you start rice cereal at 4 months and not wait until 6 months or skip all together? What is the reasoning behind what you did?
When did you start? What did you start with?

I started DD1 with rice cereal at 5 months and it was really binding so we switched to oatmeal and she was ok with that. With DD2 I went straight to oatmeal at 5 months. Followed by fruits and veggies.

My ped said to start with it and we did with DD1. It's just that's it was so binding so I say to go straight to oatmeal.

I heard the same from others so that is why we went straight to oatmeal as well.

Re: Starting food, rice cereal, etc
We started with rice cereal at 4 months. She was showing all the signs she was ready. sitting up with little assistance, interested in our food, looking like she needed more etc...
I chose to start with rice cereal because I felt it was fairly gentle. Some people use it in bottles to help with reflux and the consistency its prepared is not much thicker than formula anyway. It's just given on a spoon.
It's always worked out for me to follow my daughter's lead and cues from feeding to napping. Hope this helps.

Re: Starting food, rice cereal, etc
My ped recommended rice cereal but I opted not to use it because I believe it's too refined/processed and does not have much nutritional value. I started with sweet potato and avocado. I did not introduce grains until 10 months (stovetop oatmeal and basmati rice.)

We started at 4.5 months and DS wasn't ready. About 1.5 weeks later he was chewing when he watched us eat so we tried again and he loved it!

We started at 5 months with rice cereal and then moved to oatmeal and rice. Then fruit/veggie purees around 6 months.
ETA: i don't think DS' ped recommends rice cereal anymore after the arsenic issues earlier this year. So with this LO we'll probably do straight oatmeal.

If they watch when you eat and follow your fork from plate to mouth, make chewing motions with their mouth like you do.
We started with rice at 4.5 months, he hated it so we went to Oatmeal. Much better. His favorites were oatmeal and barley and mixed grain cereals.

Same. We started at a little over 6 mo. I felt absolutely no need to rush, DD was satisfied with her BM/formula.

DS was gagging when he even saw the spoon and feeding him solids was not pleasant. That's how I knew he wasn't ready.
2 weeks later I tried again. He wasn't gagging, but rather was opening his mouth for the food. That's how I knew he was ready.

I started feeding at 4 months. My dr said start whenever you want and when your DS is food ready. He told us if we tried and he wasn't interested wait a bit and try again.
We did rice cereal for 2 days. waited a day then did Oatmeal and then onto fruits and veggies.

Re: Starting food, rice cereal, etc
i went by the developmental milestones, which coincided with 6 months
Baby can sit up well without support. Baby has lost the tongue-thrust reflex and does not automatically push solids out of his mouth with his tongue. Baby is ready and willing to chew. Baby is developing a “pincer” grasp, where he picks up food or other objects between thumb and forefinger. Using the fingers and scraping the food into the palm of the hand (palmar grasp) does not substitute for pincer grasp development. Baby is eager to participate in mealtime and may try to grab food and put it in his mouth.

Ok so what is the schedule when introducing rice, oatmeal or fruits/veggies? Do I continue with the same amount and ounces in bottles?

Starting food, rice cereal, etc
We started at 4.5m daycare said she was ready. We did rice cereal but she had a reaction so we switched to puréed fruits and veggies. Our schedule was
Bottle Bottle 2oz food Bottle Bottle Bottle
We followed her cues and after 3 days added 2 more ozs of food at dinner time
At 6m she now has Bottle Bottle 2oz food 2oz oatmeal Bottle Bottle 2oz food 2oz oatmeal Bottle
Her formula intake is between 30-34 ounces a day and hasn't changed.

Re: Starting food, rice cereal, etc
Started at 6mos and started w avocado, banana, then orange veggies. She ate a tiny bit at a time and wasn't until 7-8mos where she ate more consistently and on a schedule.
My ped told me to wait till 6mos and said rice is processed and most all babies get bound up. So I skipped it. She is 1 now and I have never given her baby rice or oatmeal.

Re: Starting food, rice cereal, etc
I just need to say if you decide to skip rice please watch carefully for allergic reactions. We have a family history of food allergies and I'm so glad I did rice first bc DD did have a reaction to several other foods until she was a bit older. Rice is a very safe way to get the babies body used to food.

Re: Starting food, rice cereal, etc
Dr wanted me to start with rice with both kids at 4 months.
DS was super ready & ate like he was eating his whole life from spoon #2.
DD had trouble & ended up eating from spoons more at 5 months. Ended up putting cereal in her milk for exposure to the allergens (mixed data on this, but my ped believes early exposure to barley prevents gluten allergy).
Both kids have no allergies & are normal size & weight (studies showing a correlation of obesity in formula fed babies at 4 vs 6 months is why AAP says wait longer).

I love this answer. This is actually the reality of it. You start when they are ready....staring and drooling when you are eating is def they sign they are ready!!!

my kids develop rashes from processed foods. we watch carefully for allergic reactions to everything and so far they have only had a sensitivity to the "spices" ingredient that was in trader joe's hummus and ravioli. who knows what's really in there.
also, there is no need to get a baby "used to food" at 4 months. there is no rush. my ex ped insisted that if i didnt feed my kids rice cereal at 4 months, they would develop feeding issues. I waited till 6 months and now they are absolute piggies and eat everything in sight.
