Re: BF when you have cancer

I am so sorry you are going through this. Are you in treatment? One thing I used with great success was More Milk Plus. The tincture is what I used. You drop it into OJ and slam it down. Its horrible honestly, but it really works. Definitely check with your Dr. HugsChat Icon

BF when you have cancer

I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

My sister was diagnosed with skin cancer when my niece was maybe 3 weeks old. She BF her, but also supplemented. I do not think the cancer affected her supply though - she had to be on very strong antibiotics since she contracted MRSA after delivery and had to pump and dump for 3 weeks.

It def depends on your treatment for ovarian cancer.

As for milk supply, I supplemented until I got more milk with both kids. Never regretted it.

Re: BF when you have cancer

sorry you are going thru this.

First its great to hear that you are trying and are BF your baby. Give yourself a break and dont worry how much you are giving your baby and that you have to supplement. That you are giving some is so helpful.
It has to be hard to hear that you were diagnosed as you were having a new wonderful addition to your family. Stress will definitely have a toll on your supply. Its hard for most. Just try to nurse (or pump) as much as you can. And this part is hard (it was hard for me with my first) sometimes try as you might BFing may not work out and its Okay to give formula. As long as what you are doing is good for the baby and it sounds like you are doing great.
You may want to try a Guinness beer. It does actually work as does the oatmeal.

So you supplemented with formula and your supply increased? I am supplementing with 2 oz of BM after each feeding, but if I can't pump that than I will give formula. DC is 2 weeks old today. I fear that if I use formula my supply will never increase. I used formula with my older DC, but it was not until they were much older. I hate how you read stuff online and they make it seem like if you introduce formula you are doomed to lose your supply.

I am not in treatment yet, probably will not start for another month.

Good luck with the treatment!

Yes, don't stress the supply. Mine increased gradually & both kids were fully on breast milk for a few months (then I went back to work & put them back on formula). My ped actually recommended it... and it was an easy, low stress way to deal with the fact that my kids were both starving AFTER breastfeeding.

Just wanted to add I supplemented with formula and my supply increased. Definitely took the stress off me and I feel my kids were still getting BM and I wasn't so stressed about the weight gain (I had twins so weight gain was a major concern).

After a week or two I was still supplementing but really didn't need to as my supply was full force (I literally ached if I didn't pump).

Good luck Chat Icon

Have you met with a LC? I would make sure there are no issues with tongue tie and get some advice about how to get his weight up and if necessary how to supplement and still get your supply up. If pumping after a feeding isn't helping, can you try letting him nurse more instead? You can try letting LO go back on the first side since he should be more effecting than the pump and it may help boost your supply. DD didn't get back to her birthweight until around 3 weeks and we never supplemented with formula or pumped milk. She finally started gaining right around 2 weeks and then finally got up to birthweight somewhere between then and 4 weeks. Good luck and I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.

Re: BF when you have cancer

I know it's none of my business, but I have a lot of experience with ovarian cancer (my Mom had it). Please, please, please see a GYN-Oncologist. Not a regular oncologist. I was a bit taken aback when you posted that you're not starting treatment for another month. Ovarian cancer is notoriously fast-moving and a day can make a difference.

If you are already being treated by a GYN-Oncologist and waiting a month is what he/she has planned for you, I apologize for butting in. But like I said, I spent years going through this with my mother, going to doctor's appointments, doing research, helping her fight… and if I can help anyone from going through the hell she went though, I had to say something.

Best of luck to you.

Re: BF when you have cancer

Try to keep the baby at the breast as much as possible. I'm sure you've heard all this but lots of skin to skin contact and lots of water. "Gaia" Herbs sells a Lactation Support supplement with Fenugreek, Fennel seed, Rasberry Leaf, and Blessed Thistle. It has worked well for me. Also Mother's Milk Tea. I think they actually sell the tea at Stop-n-Shop. Try not to stress too much about supplementing. Any amount of BM is beneficial for your baby so you are doing something great for him. I supplemented my first daughter for the first month and went on to EBF her. Just try to keep the baby on the breast as much as possible. I'm so sorry to hear about your situation. My heart goes out to you. I'm praying everything goes well for you and your DC.

I found the fenugreek was the biggest lifesaver for me when my supply suffered. I hope you have the same luck. You are taking all the steps I would have taken to increase my supply.

I am hoping the fact that they found your cancer during your section is a sign that they caught it early and once you have your surgery all will be well. Chat Icon

Good luck to you and keep us posted on how you are doing. I am sure many people are keeping you in their thoughts!!!

Re: BF when you have cancer

I am sorry you're going through this, I would just check to see with your doctor whether any hormonal difference that might occur by either breast feeding or not breast feeding could affect the rate of growth of the tumor.
I felt the post-partum hormones a lot after I had my DD and think that breast feeding kept me feeling that way for longer so I would just make sure there's no harm that can be done. I would bet its the stress more than anything that's affected your supply.

But more importantly I wanted to write that the same thing happened to a woman I know, she discovered she had ovarian cancer when she was pregnant with twins (kids #2 and #3 for her) and they treated her after she had them and she is totally FINE now. They caught it early, you seem very on top of things, I'm sure you are scared to death but I am sure you will be okay and will be praying for you!

So sorry you are going through this, but glad they caught it early.

I just wanted to add that before you take any of the herbs, supplements and teas that we suggested here to help with your supply, check with your doctors.

You may already know that, but things that are generally considered safe, are not always safe for people with cancer.
