Is it true Suffolk North Shore has increased cancer rates?

Anyone ever hear of this? I have been doing some research and there are supposed increased cancer rates (esp Breast Cancer) on the North Shore, mostly Suffolk.

Can anyone vouch for this or dispute this? You never know what to believe. We are looking into buying a home here and want to know more before we do.

Thanks

Ive heard this - not sure if its true. I think LI in general has higher cancer rates than the rest of the country - IMO its due to the fact that we drink ground water. - NYC gets their water from resoviors (sp) - we get ours from the soil - which cant be good, imo. I will never drink tap water.

I don't think ground water in general is bad. That's where most of the country gets their water. However, I think LI must have more toxins or something in their soil.. maybe from past use or population?

and the water is supposed to be in the ground for a certain amount of years (say 20?) before we take it, and since LI population has skyrocketed in the past 50 years, we only wait a few years to take it out of the ground. I defintiely think our water is NOT safe to drink.

Doesn't LI has the highest concentration of lawn fertiziler use than any other area?

Not to offend anyone but people are "obsessed" with their lawn being green and lush here on LI.

My brothers oncologist swears that it is the drinking water, he advises all his patients and their families to stop drinking tap water and only use bottled water. I even use bottled water to wash all our vegetables and fruit. I am not taking any chances.

Actually a few months back there was story (I think in Newsday) about how LI's cancer rates have finally dropped below the national average. I'll try to find it later today, don't have time now.

This is true. Also, Long Island used to be mostly farm land. A great deal of pesticides of all kinds went into the ground and, potentially, contaminated the soil and the ground water.

I must be very sheltered but I really didnt think that anyone drank tap water anymore on LI! At the very least I thought everyone ran their water thru a Brita filter before drinking it. My mother in law doesnt even want me to cook with tap water! Sometimes I even think that showering everyday in LI water is going to eventually do some harm. I guess I am paranoid though.

I definitely think that the higher rates of cancer is due to the water here.

Your not paranoid, it is facing reality. We are in the process of putting in a whole house water filtration system. On top of that we are putting in under the sink water filtration and filtration on the shower heads. I also do not cook with tap water, I use either the water that is filtered through my fridge or bottled water from my Poland spring cooler.

I swear it's the drinking water that caused my Mom's cancer- she was the healthiest person I knew- at the gym 5 days a week, no red meat, hardly any junk- no fast food

but what comes with being healthy- drinking water- and she drank 8 to 10 glasses of North Shore, LI tap water a DAY

that being said- after she got cancer- she lost her taste for waterChat Icon

I have heard that the south shore is worse then the north- b/c of the pesticides they sprayed to kill bugs- there have been studies done

Personally- I don't drink tap water, I don't cook with tap water, my pets don't drink tap water

I get 20 gallons of poland spring delivered a month- for $35- worth every freaking penny to me!

Re: Is it true Suffolk North Shore has increased cancer rates?

Ok, so I am glad I am not the only one concerned about this.

We too never drink tap water. I do boil with it (macaroni, once in a while) simply b/c my stupid Poland Spring Cooler takes ridiculously long to fill up a pot.

But other than that, i always use Poland Spring (which has had its speculations of being not so great too, but thats another story).

I just dont feel right about drinking the water here.

Can you actually put in a whole house filtration system? How do you do that? I would love to do that.

I agree with you all, the farming is the problem, and the groundwater wells. Thats why i dont drink it. Makes me worried, yet I love LI and dont want to leave.

I would love to see that article about how the cancer rates have dropped.

See here's my theory, and its cool if nobody agrees, but why live and run your life in fear. You could walk down the street, and boom your life could be over in a blink of a eye. I consider myself an optimistic person. I don't run my life worried about the what if's. I enjoy living for the moment. We all know there may be problems with the water, but you know what, you have a bigger risk of potential hazards when you drive your car. Now almost all my family still drink tap water, uses it for cooking, bathing, etc. I don't see a need to change my lifestyle because of the potential "what if's".

I think the point is, is that there have been studies that show the damage the water can do (and has done) so why not take preventative action.

I would hardly call being educated, paranoid or living in fear. But that's just me.

Well the whole house filtration system can start in the$200 on upward. We are still researching it, but I am leaning towards this one at lowes

House filtration system

Even though I am purchasing this filter, I still will only drink bottled water. I am doing this so that we can cook and clean with filtered water.

The only studies that I've seen recently about LI water is about how tooth decay in young children's baby teeth is on the rise partly due to the fact that parents are only using bottled water for their kids, instead of fluoridated tap water.

Re: Is it true Suffolk North Shore has increased cancer rates?

Your both very welcome. I have done a lot of research lately on this because unfortunately I have too many family members who have had to deal with cancer, the most recent my little brother (But thank God, he is in remission).
