I feel like I just keep reading how everyone gets coxsackie at sesame. Is it just the wave pool? what other water rides are there? Are they all risky?
What about Dutch Wonderland?

TIA, we are going in 2 weeks and are planning to keep DS away from the water area cause We really don't want him getting it cause it is awful and we also don't have the sick time to stay home a week after the trip!

TIA

Re: Coxsackie & Sesame/Dutch

Can't speak for Sesame, we have never been.

We went to Dutch and Hershey two weeks ago, hit both water areas.

So far..so good.

Both of my boys got coxsackie a few years back from Kings Dominion in Virginia. They didn't even hit the water area.

I'm not sure about Sesame since I've never been either but, the water area at Dutch Wonderland is separate from the rest of the park - I don't even think my kids knew it was there each time we went. I walked over the last time we were there with DS 2 while he was sleeping to check it out.

DS 2 brought home coxsackie last week from daycare so even if you avoid the water areas, there is still a chance they may get it.

Yep. Sesame for me, and the kids all got coxsackie. It spreads fast and with summer and water. Just stay away from the standing water. they don't clean the pool all day or at least that I saw

Coxsackie & Sesame/Dutch

Last summer we took DS to sesame place and he did not get sick. Then in November, he caught coxsackie at daycare. So hearing that wouldn't keep me away, they can get it anywhere really.

I totally get/know that they can get it anyway and DS is a day care kid and has had RSV, roseola, we think a mild case of coxsackie, etc. already this year. But even though it can spread from anything/anywhere, it does spread more quickly and easily in water as kids ingest the water in those things very easily. Apparently it is crazy in the summer mainly from public pools and stuff. For that reason we were planning to avoid the water stuff, so I was curious what everyone else experience was. I probably should have bee more clear!

Thanks all!

We went to Dutch wonderland and he went in the water area and was fine. It seemed clean and most of it is sprinklers anyway.

Re: Coxsackie & Sesame/Dutch

I know it's super contagious but I would just be diligent with hand washing & keeping your LOs hands out of their mouths or near their eyes. It's honestly the only way to 100% avoid it. It does strive highly in the pools & water parks but is easily caught on surfaces in any place

I would not even bother going to sesame and avoiding all water. Dutch you can easily do that though.

Re: Coxsackie & Sesame/Dutch

you can get it anywhere - but I find that pools w/ alot of little kids are the worst .....
Mine didn't get it from Seseme, but DID get it from the less thanperfectly clean pool at the condo we rented in Myrtle Beach a few years ago .......

but how do you tell a little kid they can't go in the pool? -

it's been my experience that the pool/wave/water area @ Sesame is also less than clean, IMO.

DD got coxsackie a couple of summers ago from one of the indoor play places here on Long Island. Kids can get it from anywhere that other kids are. If you're going to keep your kids away from Sesame, you'll have to keep them away from the zoo, the library, birthday parties, etc. Go and have fun!

We went to Sesame in June, hit all the water rides...didn't get coxsakie. I didn't even know you could get it from a pool. We've never had it, thankfully!

You can get this from any pool, the chlorine doesn't kill it, so it has nothing to do with cleanliness. It's rampant in the Summer!

Coxsackie isn't only from water. My sister and her friend got it from a bounce house at a block party.

We have been to Dutch several times and never got anything.
We also went in the pools, water area at Eden resort.
Isn't there chlorine in the pools? Shouldn't that kill it?

You can get it anywhere.. It is like the stomach virus.. My son had it twice. Once he picked up at the library and I have no idea where he got it the second time. Summer and fall are the biggest times for it..

You can probably pick it up in a supermarket as well. From the handle of a shopping cart etc.
I don't think it's specific to water or anything.
Honestly the one time my daughter had it i had NO idea where she got it from. How can you be sure? I figured she got it in daycare.

It spreads more quickly through pools since the chlorine doesn't kill it and it's spread mainly through bodily fluids.

Re: Coxsackie & Sesame/Dutch

I'm reading up on this and apparently coxsackie can live on surfaces for days. I think it's kinda crazy to "know" you got it at a certain place if this is the case. Maybe you were on vacation and picked it up at a public restroom, from the booth at a restaurant, a random door handle, etc.

We've been to Dutch twice and only used the hotel pool. DD also goes to daycare and we've never had coxsackie. I say go and have a good time. Use normal hand washing techniques (I always prefer soap and water over purell unless it's not available) and just hope for the best.
