If your LO was over 7mo when they STTN

If your LO was older (over 7mo) when they started to STTN, how old were they? Did it happen naturally or did you do sleep training? DS is 9mo and still not STTN. He has really never slept through, so it isn't as though we regressed from STTN to not STTN.

If you did sleep training, was it a nightmare? DS still wakes 2x a night and nurses. I really don't want to be nursing him at night after he hits a year, but whenever I try to go in and not nurse him (or send in DH), he screams bloody murder!

DD was about 7 months.
It happened naturally.
I didn't really do any sleep training, I read half a book and then just let her cry a bit when she'd wake up.
But she kind of did it on her own when she was ready.
I really feel they do it on their own when ready- like potty training, giving up binkies and bottles and everything else.

I did modified CIO at 10 months. I went in a soothed but no feeding. I made the time between soothing longer each time. So heres an example:

sleep at 7
wake to eat at 10-go in and quickly soothe, leave
cry for 2 minutes, go back in soothe quickly
cry for 5 minutes
go back in etc.

DS was about 10 months old and it was a glorious night
We didn't do any sleep training - tried CIO and DH couldn't stand to hear him cry for too long and would run in his room!!

I agree with PP that it happens naturally when they're ready.

We did sleep training at 7 1/2 months for naps and night time (CIO) and immediately following that my DS began sleeping through the night and taking consistant naps from 9:00 - 10:30 and 1:30 - 3:00. It was amazing we did CIO for my DD when she was 71/2 months and it worked well for her also. It was not bad at all. First night for both kids they cried for about 20 minutes. With each nap/nighttime there was less and less crying. It was more like a fussing. As if he was saying "hey lady I don't want to go to sleep right now, I want to play!" Prior to doing it I re-read the healthy sleep habits book and searched CIO on LIF for info and support. It was amazing for my kids and really helped them learn how to self sooth and transition from one sleep cycle to the next with out waking up and relying on me to put them back to sleep.

DD was 16 months! She did sttn some nights starting at 12 months but the littlest thing would set her back. Between 15 and 16 months her sleep deteriorated until we were all miserable. She stopped going to sleep on her own at bedtime and would wake for hours in the middle of the night, I was trying to do anything not to nurse, it was just bad all around. I finally resorted to CIO at bedtime, no going in, and it worked perfectly. She cried 40 minutes the first night, 20 the second, and 5 the third and slept through from the first night.

I half halfheartedly tried CIO when she was younger but I think neither of us were ready.

my dd started STTN around 14 months - we tried things but nothing worked.. not even CIO. She did it naturally at 14 months.

we started working with a sleep coach at 8 months for our twins. rebecca from parents r talking made our lives functional again. we did it slowly and gently, no cio or anything like that, and i was still able to preserve our nursing relationship. i'd highly recommend her if you need a sleep coach!
