Daycare moms, please talk to me about the transition to a cot.

So DD will soon be 17 months old and next month she will graduate from her infant room at daycare to a toddler room (ages 18 -36 months).

DD has been hitting all her milestones, but usually more towards the late end of the range and she is generally shy and nervous in new situations. The idea of her in an unfamiliar room with kids that are much older than her is making me nervous.

Before the move, her infant room teacher wants to start transitioning her to a cot for naps instead of the crib since that's what they nap on in the toddler room. I just can't imagine this is going to go well and I'm getting a little bit of (silly mom!) anxiety about it.

Has anyone been through this that can share their experience with me? Is it not as bad as I'm thinking?

I didn't even know they were transitioning her! She did great! It wasn't until she was about 21 m and moved up AGAIN that I said - "oh, she sleeps on a cot now?"

They said "yeah, for 3 months already". Chat Icon

They deal with this ALL the time, no sense you getting anxiety over it. My DD still slept fine for naps at home in her crib. Like I said - I didn't even realize. She'll do better than you think. Chat Icon

Re: Daycare moms, please talk to me about the transition to a cot.

DS is used to his "comfort" and not always a fan of change, but he had no issues going to the cot. All the other kids lay down on the cot with the sheet and blanky you provide so it's already something they know. They play sleepy time music and the daycare teachers pat the kid's backs to go to sleep. No issues.

I have the same worry. My other worry is my kid doesn't nap so I pity her next teacher because her current one is used to the non napping.

This is exactly what happened to me Chat Icon I was terrified knowing it was coming up, esp bc DS is NOT a great napper. When I talked to them about it, he had been doing it for weeks already without any issue. I'm sure it will be fine Chat Icon

I was concerned about that too when DD started napping on a cot. But she had no problems, and still naps great there for 90 mins daily, at 3 yr old.

Yup, I worried about this too. For a few weeks DS did not nap at all. But one day he just decided to do it and now a year later still naps at daycare. Try not to stress about it too much. She'll probably follow along when she sees the other kids doing it.

It was no issue with my DS but then again if you have seen the pics I post of my DS sleeping you know he will sleep anywhere.

The only thing we found out when he made the switch (which my daycare does as 12 month) is that my DS sleep walks.

IMO it shouldn't be a bad transition....the worst that happens is they roll out and its only a few inches off the floor.

Both of my boys transitioned to a cot when they left the infant room at 12-13 months. Neither of them had any issues with it.

Daycare moms, please talk to me about the transition to a cot.

My son moved up when he was 1 year. I thought that it would be a disaster but turns out he did amazing. The first day on the cot he took a 2 hour nap at day care. This is the kid who normally takes 20 minute naps and every once in a while he would take an hour nap

This was SUCH a concern of mine too. Dd is almost 19mos and switched classrooms a month ago. She's had no issues at all. I think it's a herd mentality. All the kids are doing it so they go w the flow. I haven't even seen the cot but apparently it's like one inch off the floor.

My son is also 17 months and moving up to a toddler room next month. I'm nervous as well. He's hesitant in new situations and has really bonded with his infant teacher. I know he will bond with the new teacher as well. I'm just nervous about the transition weeks.

The cot is a whole other issue. He is not a stellar sleeper to begin with and is all over the crib and/or my bed. I can't imagine him sleeping safely on the cot.

His infant teacher told me they will start this soon in his infant room. They will also bring him over to the new toddler room to play for a bit each day. Since I'm a teacher I was hoping to make the transition in the summer when he's attending the minimum days to hold his spot. Figured it would make Sept easier and the end of my school year peaceful and without worry....but they say 18 months is 18 months. So end of April it is. : (

DS started at 12 months. I was a nervous wreck, he doesn't sit still. I said to the teacher there's no way, he will never sleep on the cot. Well he was perfectly fine and never had an issue! Daycare is amazing, he has been so good with each change, I think because of imitation and all his peers do it so he just does it too. Same with using a cup, sitting at the table and not in a highchair etc. He does have a tough time every transition though because of the change in teachers, he gets very attached.

DD had no issues transitioning to the cot. She still naps for 2-3 hours a day while she's there. She still has the same sheet and blanket that she had while in the crib in the other room.

My kids aren't big with change either but, they adapted from the crib to the mat really quickly (our daycare has mats instead of cots). There was no issue with sleeping.

I had no idea she even transitioned. We were going away and I mentioned to the teacher that I was hoping she'd sleep in the PNP fine since she was used to ti at daycare and that's when they told me she had been sleeping on a cot for months lol. Kids always do much better at school. I'm sure he'll be fine.

I was nervous when this happened too. I thought DC would NEVER stay on a cot. But it was fine. I think when they see everyone else doing the same, they just kind of follow along. If it takes her a little time I'm sure the teachers will work with her. Chat Icon

Re: Daycare moms, please talk to me about the transition to a cot.

My son transitioned at 12 or 13 months and I was sooo nervous about it but there was no issue with the naps at all. That was the easiest part if I recall correctly. For him, adjusting to a new teacher was a bigger deal. But in the end it all went well.
