Skipping the church is not an option it's one of DH's best friends.
I wouldn't say I'm pissed just bummed I will miss out :(

You do what's best for YOU. If in your mind and heart you'd rather be with your kids, then just go to the reception. They'll get over it.

How would you feel about a Wedding on Halloween?

I wouldn't want to miss trick or treating with my dd so I would probably skip the ceremony. Are kids invited to the wedding and will it be a Halloween theme? If that's the case, then it might be fun for your kids. But if they're just doing to get stuck home with a babysitter on Halloween night then I would think that's not fair to them.

I don't think you're being silly.

I would miss the church (your DH could just go) be with your kids a few hours at least 1. Go home and get ready for the reception. Or just go to the reception. Having a wedding on a Friday people who work will not take off early. I think its perfectly fine to miss the ceremony and just go to the reception.

My wedding was on halloween. People were pissed. Honestly we didn't really think people would care THAT much, especially because it was a sat and people could trick or treat in the morning.

Your wedding was on a Sat. If it was an evening wedding, it wouldn't bother me at all. I had the whole day with my kids.

To the OP: Friday night wedding on Halloween, yes, I'd be very annoyed. My kids are in school all day. It's 4:00 by the time they're both home. Gives us about 2-2.5 hours to go out and enjoy trick or treating. I would not want to miss that. You are not being silly.

I'd be bummed too.

I wouldn't say they are being selfish but, they may not realize what impact it has on guests. Assuming they don't have kids - that aspect of Halloween didn't occur to them.

Just because they ask that he be a ring bearer does not mean you need to say yes. I would reply he wants to go trick or treating. He has not had the opportunity these past few years because of the storms and Sandy. DH will be at the ceremony and the reception. I will be joining him at the reception. DS and I are going to go trick or treating. I am sorry if this disappoints you but I need to balance my families needs with yours. They need to put on big boy and girl panties and understand that the world does not revolve around them, even on their wedding day.

If YOU really like to TOT with your kids, tell your DH's friend this. It's not the end of the world. It is your CHOICE

If you are OK with going to a dress up party around that day (before or after)... do this.

Re: How would you feel about a Wedding on Halloween? Update

We went to a wedding on Halloween a few years ago. I didn't care at the time because I didn't have a kid then, but now I'd feel differently. I do remember quite a few people at the wedding grumbling about spending Halloween at a wedding instead of with their kids!

I would be really annoyed now that I have kids. I am not a fan of weddings on holiday weekends in general but it is even worse when it is on the actual day!

eta: if it was a good friend, we would of course miss trick or treating to be part of the wedding. if it were a casual friend or an old friend of DH's where I and the kids don't know the couple very well, the kids and I may skip the wedding.

I agree with this. I wouldn't want my kids to miss out on TOTing and honestly I wouldn't want to miss out on doing it with them, whether it's dh's best friend or not. We only get so many Halloweens to spend with our kids before they push us away & want to go out alone with their friends...I wouldn't want to sacrifice one of them for a wedding. I'd decline the ring bearer invitation, stay with them to TOT & then when they're good & exhausted afterwards, meet up with my dh at the reception Chat Icon

idk, I love halloween but to me a wedding is more important. And your DH is in it so its not any wedding, these are his friends. But thats just my opinion. As much as I love Halloween, to me its not a holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas or even New years.

Wow, I would be really upset then if they wanted DS to now be the ring bearer. Most people aren't home during the day so I would be taking DS probably around 4pm... I think it would be wrong to deny him the fun of trick or treating. Ugh, tough situation.

I'd be fine with it but if I wasn't I'd go late or not at all. I would never expect someone to plan their wedding around me or my family.

I think your DHs friend is either clueless about kids or being incredibly selfish. I would nicely say that you're honored he wants to include your son, but that he looks forward to Trick or Treating each year. And what about your other kids? Do they still get to trick or treat? Or do you have to bring them to the wedding too, and they don't even get to be in it?

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I wouldn't be annoyed or upset but my DD isn't of TOT age.

Especially a close friend where my kid was asked to be RB.

I wouldn't skip the ceremony.

I have to be honest, it wouldn't phase me at all. Your DHs best friend gets married once, Halloween is every year .

This is how I feel. If it were MY best friend, I would be super honored that they wanted my DS to be a part of their special day. I do understand feeling a little bummed but I personally wouldn't miss out on a minute of my (of DHs) best friends wedding.

Totally agree with all of this. Kids are only little for long, I wouldn't want to miss a single Halloween and Trick or Treating with them. I'd also make sure that we did another Halloween event on a different day to make up for rushing off to the wedding.

With your update now I would just let it go and go to the wedding and thank them for picking DS to be a part of their wedding. If these were good friends I could never say no just because of trick or treating. I would totally ask if DS could wear his costume down the aisle though Chat Icon

I am in the minority because when I read the title I was thinking how awesome it would be to go to a wedding on Halloween, it is kind of like a New Years wedding, not a holiday but a time to have fun! Yes, I would miss my kids but as other posters have mentioned there are so many events for Halloween that we go to before the actual day, and honestly, we only go TOT on Halloween for like an hour....
