Re: Had an interesting convo with my sister...
DS ended up having a milk protein allergy that wasn't diagnosed until like 4 months old. So I literally had a chest freezer of breast milk. A Mom who's daughter has SMA took about half of it and a Mom (who found me on the Internet) took the rest for her daughter, because her supply was poor. I was shocked that she just took my word for it that I was reasonably healthy, avoided caffeine and alcohol and was disease free!
I wouldn't let my son nurse off another woman... And I wouldn't nurse another child. I had no problem donating my milk and I don't feel strongly enough about breast milk to give DS someone else's.
I agree with OP... That seems a little extreme, IMO

Re: Had an interesting convo with my sister...
thats what wet nurses were for back in the day right?
would i want my kid actually nursing on someone else's boob..no. I didnt breast feed b/c I couldnt. I would not be opposed to using donor milk if my child needed it though.

It's interesting that we as a society are okay with having our children drink milk from a cow that we most likely have no knowledge of its health, history, diet, etc.; however we are very uncomfortable with the idea of giving our kids milk from another human being. I myself admit it's hard to accept.

Re: Had an interesting convo with my sister...
Hell no, my kids were FF after I didn't produce enough milk for them to BF. 2 of them were diagnosed with failure to thrive and the formula made them thrive. I didn't let the other two get to that point. My thoughts were why should I starve my children because breast milk is best....blah blah blah....Formula seemed to be what worked and they thrived on it!!
IF they had a condition that needed breast milk, I would consider giving them bottled BM but no way would I have a wet nurse to nurse my child.
honestly, I gave my children formula and couldn't be happier for it. I have 4 smart and awesome children. I know what nutrients they are getting in the formula. And my kids aren't lacking in any way from it. I would recommend formula feeding to anyone.

As long as I was assured that the person was healthy etc... I would much prefer to give my baby human milk then another animals milk, or manufactured milk (formula) I would prefer to use donor milk over nursing though, if there was a choice..

Re: Had an interesting convo with my sister...
Honestly for me I would not do it bc I do not feel strongly about BFing. It did not work out for me and my son got pumped BM for 4 weeks before I dried up. There was guilt bc I had been made to feel I SHOULD be BFing him but honestly I was not BF'ed nor was my DH, we are healthy people with good immune systems and above average IQ'S so for ME I would not chose someone else BFing my baby over formula.
That said I see nothing wrong with someone else choosing this for their child, some people feel very strongly that breast milk is best and they should do what works for them!

I was faced with this situation. My twins were born slightly premature and I have very large breasts and had to pump for them their first couple of months. I never produced enough to get any extra supply. It was barely enough to satisfy them each meal. I pumped every 3 hours. I had to supplement with formula. One of my girls was having blood in her stool, the other was terribly gassy and both of them had horrible reflux. We went thru several different types of formula trying to find something that would work. We went to a gastroenterologist who prescribed elecare and antacids. Elecare was $600 per month for both babies. Insurance initially denied coverage.
At the same time a distant friend has a baby 6 months older than my girls. She was exclusively BFing and pumping. She produced milk like a prize heffer LOL She had a freezer full of milk. She was and is much healthier than me, her diet is much better than mine. She wasn't a close friend, she was my moms friends daughter we used to play when we were around 10 years old but I hadn't spoken to her for 27 years. She had been passing clothes on from her DD thru our moms and we were texting back and forth casually. "thanks for the clothes, how are the girls etc" So it's not like we were BFF or anything.
She texted me one day and kindly offered me her milk. My first reaction was "no F*ing" way. But watching them suffer and the severe sleep deprivation of having two screaming babies. My husband working 16 hours, 6 or more days a week I was at the end of my rope. I thought about it for almost 2 weeks. This was right at the same time we were starting on the elecare. In my mind this was the LAST option for formula and if this didn't work what was I going to do?
So mentally I did make the decision that if the elecare didn't work I would take her up on her offer. It would be the only reason I would ever allow them to have someone else's breast milk, but if that is what it would take then yes I would do it. It would have killed me to watch them be nursed by someone else but even that I would have done if it meant I wouldn't open up a diaper full of blood and we all could do better. The sleep deprivation was murder and they were sooo uncomfortable. It really takes it's toll on your sanity.
Fortunately, I didn't have to do it though because the Elecare worked great. Their digestive system matured and we all survived it. Insurance (BCBS) even accepted our appeal and they paid for their entire first year of formula.
I'm so sorry for your poor babies!! I'm glad everything worked out. In the situation you went through- I would definitely consider using donated breast milk!

Re: Had an interesting convo with my sister...
I BF my kids and don't think I could do that- formula seems a much cleaner solution.
Sometimes my older son sees me pumping and asks to have the milk. I let him try it but even that grosses me out, haha. In my head its not his milk- its meant for the twins.

I'd be ok with using donated milk. I don't know about letting my baby nurse from another woman, because there is a big bonding aspect there.

Same.
I would have no problem using another woman's BM as long as I knew she was healthy. I wouldn't want her to actually nurse my child because of the bonding that occurs.

Re: Had an interesting convo with my sister...
I don't understand this mindset at ALL. Formula fed babies are just as smart, healthy, loved, and awesome as breastfed babies. Anyone who says otherwise is judgmental and closed minded.

Your answer sounds close minded.
Nothing is wrong with formula...unless the mother feels it is wrong for her child.
Options are a wonderful thing.
