We recently moved to a new house and haven't gotten around to securing our furniture. Everything was secure in our old home. I just texted DH that we need to make this a priority, this weekend. Thank you for sharing.

OMG. So heartbreaking.

And I too, none of my DDs furniture is secured. I have to look into this and do something.

OMG. How awful and tragic.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had to stop reading. I couldn't get through the whole thing. This will definitely become a priority the minute DD becomes mobile!

This story hits way too close to home for me! I read it earlier this week and cried for a long time. I couldn't even tell my DH about it without crying.

My son is 3 years old also and there have been many mornings where I tell him it's not time to get up yet and he goes back to play in his room.

The vision of that mother holding her baby's body cuddled up in a blanket in the rocking chair will haunt me forever Chat Icon

For me this hit close to home too. My son is 3. He climbs everything. He has been waking up earlier than we like and so Santa bought him a Rocket Ship alarm clock. We have instructed him that if he wakes up early he must wait until the Rocket Ship "blasts off." Just this morning DS woke up at 7 a.m. His rocket ship doesnt blast off until 7:30. I yelled into the monitor that the rocket ship did not get up yet and he had to wait. DS' furniture is heavy and it is not strapped to the walls. Not because I havent said it to DH but because DH has an excuse and has procrastinated.

I just made DH cry and if that is what it takes to get him to move his azz than so be it. I told him to read the story. Not to skip anything. That our marriage and lives depended on it. He was crying when he finished it. I told him that not one more day would go by. That if after reading what I sent him, that if the furniture was STILL not attached to the wall tomorrow then he should not be a father. I said other things. I was mean. I dont care. The furniture will be attached tomorrow and regardless of when the boy wakes up tomorrow, we will not wait for the rocketshipChat Icon

I feel you. I made DH read it too. I've been saying "enough, no more excuses, just get it done" for a while...but after reading this it was time to put my foot down. We are going to pick up the straps tomorrow an DH is going to install that as well as the toilet seat lock and a few other things I've been asking him to do. DH agreed that after reading that there really is no reason why we should not do a better job of childproofing.

Haunted is the word. I can't shake this story from my mind since I read it this morning. The pajamas. My God. I really do not think I could go on. My soul would be dead.
But I am grateful for having read it too...Thank God I read this. It has made my home safer for DD. And that is what this mother's goal is

Omg. I can't stop looking at this. This poor woman. Did anyone watch the youtube video she has posted, with all the pictures from the funeral and burial?

The song that plays is heartwrenching, A Visitor From Heaven
It hurts so much you had to go
We're so glad you came

I can't stop crying. I have to get the tethers for my DDs furniture tomorrow. Have to. She has been waking up early and we also tell her it's not time to get up. She usually stays in our room but occasionally she does disappear. Furniture tipping does always cross my mind but now I can't let it go anymore.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Something every parent, caregiver, grandparent etc. should read. Warning: It is extremely sad

almost all of our furniture is secured and we will now do the one thing that isn't. my 5 year old has been climbing up on his dresser to get things off the book shelvin thta goes on top of the dresser. The dresser and shelving are strapped to the wall but I worry. I started not to keep anything at all on his shelves but I may even dismantle the whole thing, ie not have the book shelving on top of the dresser for a while. I keep thinking, "what if our strap isn't done as well as we think?" We had a childproofer and it was money well spent. He told us that he has heard of cases where the dresser was pulled right down along with the wall beam. A major lessone here, though, is that it does not even have to be a big dresser or a tall one and there can still be a tragedy.

im a mess right now...

my daughter is 3 and I thought she's old enough not to worry about those things anymore.

All bureaus/chests will be secured now. It will probably take sending this to DH as well.

My heart breaks for that mom.

My daughter isn't a climber so I never worried about these things. After reading this article, we strapped the furniture down this weekend.

2 1/2 days, five different stores, a drawer full of "wrongly purchased items, 12 extra holes in the wall, lots of cursing, the threat of divorce, and finally DS's two pieces of furniture are securely fastened to the wall.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Omg, thank you for posting this. I am bawling my eyes out, but I am going to secure the rest of the things in my kids' rooms this weekend.

We have the taller dresser secured, but the long wide ones my Mom told me would be less likely to tip over. Exactly like the one that fell on this poor woman's DD.

Thank you thank you thank you.

They have everything you would need at any of the baby stores. And the get yourself a hammer and/or screwdriver. You don't need to wait for your DH. It is not a difficult project but is important.
