We paid just under 160K in June 2010, and our taxes are just under $5,000. Our house was a foreclosure.
It's very small...2 bed, 2 bath....but it's a perfect starter home for a young couple. We will likely stay another couple of years.

405K in 2009. Taxes are about 9K a year. No idea what it's worth now.

I put my search on hold- both houses I wanted are now flood damaged and I might buy a condo back on the north shore

Screw the cost of the house...it's the taxes that are the killer. 
seriously - my parents house in suffolk county is 17k/yr in taxes and it is not 1 million dollars. I live in westchester and my taxes are 20k and my house isn't over a million. ridiculous. the cost of the house isn't really the issue. It is the taxes

The 2bed 1 bath condo we have now was $250, and we just went into contract on a 5 bed 2.5 bath home on .6 acre for $350.

They paid 1.2 in 2007 and added about 75k in improvements. (Goes to show how much the market dropped)
We paid 981k in 2011
Taxes are 20k

Waaayy more than it's worth today but we bought in 05.
However, because of HARP, we were able to refi with a good rate and cut our monthly payment by 25%. Fortunately we always stayed current and were in good standing.

We're closing on Monday on a home that's in 400-600 range, with $11K taxes after star deduction. Truly wish taxes were a lot less, like a third!

At the time 410K in 2005, probably worth about 300-320 now but we got our interest rate down to 2%. So a negative turned to a positive.

Our home up here Short Sale Miller Place $290,000 in 2010

our land was $415k alone in 2006!  so yeah... we paid a fortune for our house.

450k this past May w/10k in taxes (this includes village).
House was move-in ready.
This was a little over what we wanted to pay but we were also estimating to pay 12k in taxes so the slightly lower  taxes made the payments the same per month.
The previous owners purchased the home in 2005 at 410k and had to gut the entire house.

We bought at the height of the market in 2005 in a fairly affluent area of NJ. We paid WAY too much for our house based on the current worth of it. However, with that said, it's our forever home and we've recently paid off the mortgage. Our taxes though are over $20k/year.
