How much did you pay for your home?

So with all of the livable salary and spinoff posts it just got me wondering what the "average" house price is for those LIFER's who own their own home (house or apartment).

Even with this information, there are still variables to consider like year purchased, and downpayment.

We bought 12 years ago. Our house is now almost double in value! We were lucky to buy when we did (2000). It's not our forever home, but we're staying put for now.

Re: How much did you pay for your home?

370ish in 2006 @ 6.25% with 100K down in Sayville. The house was on the market for $500 originally but kept coming down. It was $425 when we made our offer.. but it had been empty for a while after a series of renters so they seemed eager to sell and accepted our 2nd offer.

ETA: Our mortgage is 265 now.. but the house is worth more than that due to upgrades, etc. I don't know how much better we would have done if we'd waited, I think we got a good deal despite the market at the time.

Re: How much did you pay for your home?

We bought our house 15 years ago, so the price we paid has no bearing on what it's worth today. We also doubled the size of the house 4 years ago, which makes the purchase price totally unrelated to the current value.

How much did you pay for your home?

We are getting a steal because we waited and didn't buy at the height of the market. 3 bedroom/2 bath ranch on half an acre in eastern Suffolk with a basement apt...under 200k with 3.5% interest.

Re: How much did you pay for your home?

I live in Maryland, pretty area near Annapolis. We bought our first home 3 years ago..it's a townhome but its about 2200 sq ft which is pretty big for a townhome. We paid 300K and our taxes are $3500! We just refinanced too and locked in 3.80 so our mortgage payment is more affordable for us. We have condo fees too (150/month) but its worth it!

I doubt we could have bought a thing on long island if we lived there...i don't know how people do it

Re: How much did you pay for your home?

$365K 10 years ago. 10% down. Taxes 8300. Refi'd 2x. Appraised for 425K.

Our mortgage payment is comfortable for what we earn and we could still do it with one salary now but we make a whole lot more than we did when we bought it. I definitely wouldn't have said that 10 years ago when I was shitting a brick signing the closing documents.

eta: Taxes 10 years ago were 4600..yeah, taxes..

How much did you pay for your home?

$355k. We bought last year. Our mortgage is pretty decent. Thank God, because any higher and we wouldn't be able to swing it.

Re: How much did you pay for your home?

We bought at the peak in 2005 so we paid a lot. Interest rate was decent and we put nothing down. We can afford our house just fine on DH's salary but it's frustrating to see what the same house in Stony Brook is going for now, we're totally upside down in our mortgage. Hopefully the market slowly starts turning back around. I will say though, we bought a fixer upper so we did end up getting a decent deal for the area and house BUT still, we bought at the peak. How much did you pay for your home?

I bought my co-op in 1998, so that price has no bearing in todays market. Re-fied once to lower my mortgage rate and duration, at the time the appraisal was for 2.5 times the original purchase price.

Yes, taxes on LI are horrible. My taxes each month are more than my mortgage. Depressing.

How much did you pay for your home?

I know people are saying that what they paid has no relivance to what its worth today. However, thats not the point of this discussion. The point is to find out what people paid/refinanced for their house which greatly impacts what their monthly mortgage payment is.

if you paid $150K for your house whether its worth 200K now or 800K now, you should be able to afford your house making a whole lot less than the person who paid 800K for it.

we recently paid in the 400-600 range and put down 20%. We also got a pretty low interest rate. Taxes though are over 15k which is ridiculous.
