Righty or Lefty

DH's mother and brother are left handed. My grandma was left handed. We are wondering if DD will be left handed. (not that there is anything wrong with that but both DH and I are right handed and we were curious if she would be right handed too).

Does anyone have a child who uses a hand that is different than the one both their parents use?

When did you know whether you DC was right handed or left handed?

ETA: thanks for the responses so far. and for those so concerned we are "worried" about this as if it is a top concern of ours, calm yourselves and check your own priorities- it is really not that serious- more of a typo. We are really just wondering/curious. As I said we both have left handed and right handed people in our family and were more intrigued about whether these things tend to go by the parents or skip generations and how common it is to have a child whose dominate hand is the opposite of their parents!

I'm sorry but I have no idea why this would be a worry for you.

To answer your question, though, I am lefty and DS (almost 4) is righty. Both my parents and sister are righty also so growing up the only thing I can vaguely remember is having a left handed cousin teach me to tie my sneakers Chat Icon

I think the "experts" say that you can't determine the dominant hand until they are older (i want to say 3ish- I really don't remember the age) but I remember DS using his right hand mostly from about a year-maybe younger-especially when he started throwing a ball, feeding himself, etc.

We were actually to tell that my DD was right handed when she was just a baby. From birth she ALWAYS favored her right hand for EVERYTHING. She sucked her right thumb, held things better in her right hand, went to grab things with her right hand. Needless to say, she's now 4 and very much a righty. Chat Icon

Re: Righty or Lefty

DD #1 is a lefty and DD #2 is a righty (it seems). DH and I are both right handed. My mom and sister are left handed. As far as DD #1 being left handed it hasn't caused her any problems. She loves to color, write and cut. She is actually very good at doing all of those things for being 4. She has not had any struggles due to being "lefty". DH and I have not had any problems teaching her either.

I'm curious why it would be a problem if she uses a different hand than you and DH? I don't see why that would be an issue. DD is 28 months and we still don't know which hand is the dominant one. She uses both pretty well right now. DH is a rights and I'm a lefty so either way she'll be different than one of us.

Seriously. It's hand dominance, not a genetic disease.

My DD is a lefty- she is 3 but we could tell by around 2. I am a lefty, my DH is a righty.

To say that you are worried your DD will be left-handed because you and your DH are right-handed is a little dramatic.

My DH and I are both lefties and I would LOVE it if my DD was a lefty too but it seems as though she is favoring her right but there is no need to worry or stress about it.

I am a lefty and I can assure you there is nothing wrong with it. In fact I have had a ton of people point out how cool they think it is that I am left handed over the years. The good news for you (i guess?) Is that left handedness is rare and if neither you or dh are lefthanded your child only has a 10% chance of being lefthanded.

At the risk of sounding rude this just seems like a silly thing to concern yourself with or worry about. If your child being left handed is the worst thing to happen to them then consider yourself extremely lucky.

DH and I are both LEFTY and it looks like DD (20 months) will be a RIGHTY. She eats and colors with her right hand.

There is nothing wrong with being a lefty. I have never had any issues. There is nothing to be worried about!

AJ always favored her left for EVERYTHING. Which makes sense. Your non dominate hand is the one you use for large movements. You use your dominate hand for fine motor skills. She threw with her left, grabbed with her left and started coloring with her left.

It was when she was in school that they offered her pens, colors, utensils, etc in the middle that she started favoring her right. Really feeding herself sorta of cemented that she is indeed a righty.

My aunt is a lefty, her aunt (SIL) is a lefty.

But our household is righty

Re: Righty or Lefty

THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE DUMBEST POST EVER!!!!
But to entertain you I have an aunt and uncle both righties and both their kids lefties.
My sister is a lefty out of my family of righties.
My 1st DS is a lefty, Im a righty and his father only wrote and ate with his left, did everything else righty.
My grandfather was a lefty and back then they thought it was evil and tied his hand behind his back and made him write with his right hand, horrible I say.
So we have many people that are lefty in my family and have been great successful people.
I must say you should be happy that your child has both hands and use of them.

Same here. The only issue I had with it was learning to play lacrosse since everyone else was learning righty. It ended up being a benefit though since everyone was used to playing against right handed people.

Most of my group at work is left handed as well and people like to point that out at meetings since they view it as unique.

Re: Righty or Lefty

one of my DD's is a lefty. To be honest, the only things it really effects is teaching how to hold certain things tying shoes etc.

by the age of 2-3 we knew she was a lefty.

Re: Righty or Lefty

DS1 is left handed (though throws and bats righty) while DH and I are righties. We suspected when he was around three and then in preschool they determined it.

Jesus Christ.
Congratulations you are the 2nd person I've ever known in my entire life who has this worry.

The other one is 78 year old grandma from Slovakia, who is also relieved her first grandchild is a boy.

Of all the things to worry about. Your life must be wicked awesome.

Such a ******** response. Get off your high horse, there was no need for such a comment. It was just downright mean.

Hmmmm...sound familiar? Chat Icon

Oh wait, clearly you've deemed THIS question ridiculous so how it's ok to be an asshole? Ah...Gotcha! Chat Icon

To the OP, I agree with others that I don't think being left handed is something to really worry about. If it makes you feel better, my dad is left handed and went to Harvard. Not too shabby... Chat Icon

Re: Righty or Lefty

Really, people?! You are going to get on someone for asking a simple question. Maybe "worry" was the wrong word to use, but my gosh!!!! Beat her up for a possibly weird question, come on!!!

Maybe the OP was just wondering b/c as a righty, it is harder to show a lefty how to do stuff. And learning to write, cut paper, may be slightly more annoying if you are lefty.

By bother is lefty. I remember him having some (very) small troubles in school b/c the desks were made for righties, most sissors were made for righties, etc (maybe it's not so much now, I don't know.) In fact, I got in trouble in school for writing a check mark backward because I guess I learned from him. His daughter is lefty and she was asking for help with her writing homework - I had to really concentrate to show her b/c it was just working from a different angle.

Why the heck do people have to freak out like she was saying lefties are the scourge of the earth. Yes, there are a MILLION+ things that are way more worth worrying about, but I have seen plenty of silly questions here. JMOChat Icon

On a side note, we were actually hoping DS would be a lefty - DH and I thought being a left handed pitcher in the major leagues sounded like an awesome plan for him.Chat Icon
