I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

I am still undecided and one of the biggest reason is that I work in healthcare. I have some serious concerns about my personal livelihood with the implementation of Obamacare. Im sure there are other women in a similar situation where they need to reconcile in their own mind, not necessarily to someone else, how to choose between their livelihood and opinions on the economy and their equally strong social views. I am very pro-choice... I am 100% supportive of gay marriage, but i need to pay my mortgage. It is an incredibly difficult decision to have to prioritize and not one I'm happy about being forced to make.

I honestly don't see anything that needs to be reconciled. Not in my mind. You (and Mer, and others) and I are wired differently in that regard, and that's OK.

As far as his comments about women in the workforce/equal pay/ the "binders" - I didn't see anything wrong with that. I wasn't offended, not in the least. Didn't give it a second thought. And that's OK too.

This. They are harping on that binder thing and I think its silly and childish. I have no issue. At least he is trying to acknowledge that he thinks of us as an asset that needs to be addressed.

for me, im more concerned with other issues. when i ask myself am i any better than i was 4 years ago....NO WAY! my husbands salaray was cut due to obama interfering with his industry, im still unemployed, my health ins. has skyrocketed, my house is worth so much less than what i paid for it, gas and other prices are ridiculous.

I can not take another 4 years of obama. I can look past romney's views on women bc i need to worry about my FAMILY and our financial future.

i dont like either candidate, but 4 more years of the same thing just doesnt sit well with me.

Amen! The president doesn't make policy. Altho I agree he does choose supreme court justices. Our congress would have to challange Roe vs Wade. So why then would you don't dump the old buggers THERE?! They to me are more of a threat to women's rights than the man in the oval office.

To the OP, I tried to ask this question very directly with my pro-choice vs politics thing and it went sideways. Someone there understood that most republicans prefer not to have the govt in any part of our personal life and that includes between my legs. its gotten twisted due to tea party and other media fubars but the point is most of us want the govt to just shut up and do their JOBS.

Keep us safe against our enemies
Keep us employed
Keep us financially sound

The rest is up to the individual.

I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

I'll answer, since a lot of people know I'm pretty republican

For me, I can't be a part of Obama being in office for another 4 years.

Also, I truly can't see r v w overturned-there are do many who are so prudently against it being overthrown would stop it from happening

Finally, I have VERY different opinions of female roles than probably 99% of the population. It doesn't make me less of a wan, nor does it mean that I am unable to understand the opinions of the vast majority-it's just not how I personally think.

I totally agree. The way these sound bites get picked up and blown up, with Twitter accounts and blogs, etc. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but let's focus on the real issues, not a phrasing or the way something was said, which may not have been the most eloquent.

But I don't want it to get nasty.

For the women of these boards, if you plan to vote for Romney, how do you reconcile his stand on womens issues?

I've asked this question of women I know. The answer I always get is "it isn't my first priority" or some variation of that. I'm really interested to see what people have to say because I honestly can't wrap my head around it.

I get the same answer from people or the women I know that are voting for him beleive abortion is wrong and will not vote for a democrat because of that.

For me personally woman's rights are such a big part of my decision. I can live with different tax cuts and such or foreign policies. These are things that are constantly changing and I can live with them on a more short term basis. However once woman's rights are changed it takes forever to get them changed again.

Ding ding ding! That's the essence of what I'm trying to get to. The reasons you listed are not enough for me to vote for someone who may unequivocally change the course of womens rights. And I think that is why it seems incomprehensible to me that this is even an issue.

Exactly. Taxes, foreign policy....these things evolve and change with time and society. They are fluid and always will be. Women's rights should NOT even be a discussion. It should NOT even be a topic in a debate, because it should be a given. Roe v. Wade "probably" won't be overturned? NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Why is it even a concern? Why are we still discussing it? Equal pay? Is this really still an issue in 2012? These, to me, are THE most important issues.

Right, but the threat alone of the potential for its repeal is enough to stop me from voting for Romney. We just don't know what will or will not happen, and I'm taking those odds.

For me, I am the complete opposite. The social issues are the LAST thing on my priority list.

I care about jobs, homeland security, financial security and my children's future in America. Obama has FAILED on all of my priorities so the social issues take a back seat.

If our country was in a different spot, then I my priorities would change.

I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

For me, the ecomony is the #1 priority of interest. After four years, I am not impressed at all by Obama. The first two years of his presidency he had the majority in Congress and didn't do anything. When congress became Republican he blamed his inability to get his plans implemented on "bipartisiamism".

With regard to women's rights (and I know I'm going to get flamed for this) I think it the one thing Democrats use to distract. Ever since Reagan, democrats claim that Roe v Wade will be overturned with a Republican president. The decision is almost 40 years old and it hasn't been overturned. There hasn't been an event that threatened it of being overturned.

I feel like every presidental election the Democrats use the threat of "vote Democrat or Roe v Wade will be overturned." I feel it's an issue that they should let go.

And while I agree with the democract stance on social issues such as gay marriage, I feel the economy is most important.

For those whose #1 priority is the economy, I have a question.

Which of Romney's policies on taxes, jobs, the economy are so great? Honestly. I'd like to hear specifics if possible. What I don't want to hear is "Well, Obama didn't do this or that". This is about ROMNEY's plan, his ideas. Not Obama.

Thanks!

I see what is being said here. However, for me personally, even if I was a parent (and as a wife), I would want my vote to go to someone who would work to uphold my rights as a woman, which are also the rights of my future daughters, granddaughters, nieces, etc. If I can't know that I will be able to receive the healthcare I need that is so vital to my existence, the other things don't matter much. I think women's rights impact ALL the other issues - employment (equal pay, maternity leave policies, etc.) taxes (health care, again with equal pay) obviously healthcare as its own issue as well. While I respect that there are other concerns, for me they are all so closely intertwined that nothing can be prioritized over my rights as a woman.

Agreed!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm not thrilled with the job Obama has done...I would prefer not to have four more years of this - However I am unable to vote for someone who doesn't believe that my rights as a woman are important.

I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

Romney lost my vote the minute his religious views entered politics. I dont care wht someone's opinon is, a woman's body is her own and she can do as she pleases. Also in terms of economy please tell me 1 good thing Romney proposes. He wants to privitize social security which would be horrible for us, he wants to cut taxes for the lower class and give them to the upper class, he claims middle class make $250K a year well I guess Im poor. I think he is rude and even though I think Obama could have done a better job I dont want Romney in office. It will make a bad situation worse.

I just have to say that I'm pretty surprised that more people haven't commented. It doesn't need to get nasty but I am genuinely curious to hear some responses, but now I am wondering if people are just pushing aside how they feel about this just to vote for Romney so Obama's not re-elected?

It's impossible. You are essentially dealing with people who will be on the wrong side of history. Think of how we feel about people who were against integration or a woman's right to vote? That's how those people will be viewed if history has taught us anything.

Re: I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

I'm conservative, I'm a woman.

I don't normally share shit like this but I've got a husband out of work, we just sold our home as a result.

I've got bigger fish to fry and worries on my plate than flipping Roe vs. Wade and GOD forgive me, I get it - it's important and I'm all for it - But, I have bills to pay and Lord knows, in our life right now (meaning, Vin and I) we can't afford another four years of this.

I've lost so much. I'm prepared to work my butt off to get some of it back - but God, it's been an uphill, can't catch my breath struggle for four years - it's like a war, and Vin and I have been through it together.

Now, everyone is entitled to feel how they feel - we may disagree, that's fine - but I will not argue or banter. This is my life, this is survival for me - staying above water - and women's issues, sorry, it's not even a blip on my radar right now because of our more pertinent and personal struggles.

Re: I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

Romney doesn't have my vote but I do want to say...there are too many states where it is so difficult to get an abortion. Where 96%, 98% of the counties in that state don't have an abortion provider.

NY, CT - we are in states where you don't have to drive so many hours or cross state lines to get a safe abortion, where there isn't a 24 mandatory waiting period.

I can't even believe that in 2012 I have to worry about this. It's like a sick game politicians play with us.
