Just curious, am I just old-fashioned...

This weekend we were at a store and there was a little boy, around 5, wearing PJ's. Actual flannel pajamas, and crocs.

DS (almost 3) saw him and yelled "that boy is wearing pajamas OUTSIDE " - he was shocked, LOL! . But honestly, I didn't know what to say except that we don't wear pj's outside (bc you know he's going to want to do the same).

Is this acceptable now?

ETA: We were at a party store.

This is actually an inside joke in my house. However I feel exactly like you. Pajamas are not to be work out of the house. And I SMH when I see adults wearing them. I don't get it

Just curious, am I just old-fashioned...

I've brought the kids to the dr in PJs when they were really sick and subsequently to CVS to fill a prescription. I've also had days where I elected not to fight with my 3 year old DD and let her wear dress up clothes or a tutu or a cape or her new Little Mermaid PJs to the store.
I have to pick my battles. I probably wouldn't have looked twice at the kid!!

DS wore pajamas to school... But then again it was "pajama day" at school for the week of respect so tomorrow he will be mismatched. Chat Icon

Early morning if a kid is under 5 then I don't think pajamas would bother me. DH has ran out with DS to home depot around 7am and just took him in pj's. He was 2. I usually like to dress the boys first thing in the morning, but on yucky days I don't mind a pajama day either.
Then again we don't plan on running out, but if something comes up where we have to I don't change the kids. They are 3 and 1. Also, for the doctors when they are sick I will keep the, in their pajamas.

My inlaws watch my DS during the week and I always send him down in his PJs. I do that in the hopes that he will go back to sleep (which never happens!) since he has to wake up extra early to go down there. However he is only in the car and is usually changed into his clothes for the day shortly after he gets to his grandparents.

I think there are certain times it's ok for your kid to be out of the house in his PJs - (like going to the Dr. when they're sick) ......but just for a normal day out shopping? Nah, that is a battle I choose to fight in my house.

Others may not think it's a big deal, but I do.

Re: Just curious, am I just old-fashioned...

I've seen teenagers and adults do this for so long.. its Chat Icon to me.. I think it looks lazy and really dumb. I mean I've seen tweety bird on the butt of a 40yr old woman walking around with her Louis Vutton bag and puma sneakers. Wha?!

Teens do it and i figure they just think its cool. but I think its stupid.

No way is my kid going out in PJ's. Yes, I took her to the doc in her jammies once. Afterwards she slept in the car seat while I did drive up at the CVS for her meds. I didn't pull her out. I sat in the car and ate a hamburger while I waited. Then drove back through for her meds.

Now, if this makes sense, I also let AJ go to sleep in her shorts and a tshirt and not necessarily PJs so those, I have no issue with going out in. but if she's wearing actual PJs, then I HAVE to change her before she leaves the house.

Even when she's in shirt and shorts, I have to change her LOL. I dont buy fancy dresses or nice designer clothes for AJ. She gets Gap from her auntie only because we went to NY lately. Otherwise the girl is a Target model from my other aunt and I have supplemented the drawers with Goodwill and second hand stores.

So if I'm already 'subpar' for the area I live in no way I'm taking her out in PJs.

I am not a fan. Outside of a sick child going to a doctor, I can't imagine ever doing it myself. It's just not how I want my kids to look, kwim?

I don't care if other people do it though. I assume they're just having "one of those mornings" Chat Icon

I am with you. I would never allow my child or myself to do this. To me, there are plenty of comfortable clothes that can be worn out vs wearing pjs.

What a cute response from your son Chat Icon

I've seen it myself on occasion & unless one of my kiddos is sick, I can't see doing it. I don't care if anyone else does it though...

I'm not a fan either. Sometimes and I mean very rarely do I wear sweats out. I wore then for a 4 min walk yesterday and dh was like what are you doing. Haha.

I do dress dd in some cute sweats sometimes but most times she's dressed.

Even when she was an infant I only had a few sets of sleep and plays. I have always dressed her to go out. Always comfy as a newborn but very rarely pj's. Unless sick or a quick run and sleeping or soemthing

I wouldn't think much of it. Adults yes but kids no. You never know what the situation was.

My DD once wore her pj pants to the beach over her bathing suit bc it was the only way I could get her in the car.

I honestly can't believe anyone cares.

Today I took my 14 mo. old into the deli with me...in pajamas. If people find that horrifying, they can suck it!

Once when I was letting my child pick out their own clothes, said child chose pajama pants and a regular shirt, and rain boots! RIDICULOUS, yes, but harmless, so off to Target we went. I don't care what anyone thought, it made my child happy and I didn't see the big deal. Same DC also asked to wear their full Halloween costume to Starbucks last week and I let them. Like I said, it puts a smile on their face, no harm done AT ALL, and no permanent damage done. I would rather they enjoy the time when they can live freely without realizing people judge them based on their looks and just be a kid. The time will come when they will become conscious of what others think of them and be too cool to be ridiculous and until then, let the good times roll.

Re: Just curious, am I just old-fashioned...

The other reason I would never do it is b/c pajamas are for bed only. If I ever allowed my child to wear them out (which I would never), they would definitely not be allowed to sleep in them at night. I never let my DD sleep in clothes she has worn outside during the day. That skeeves me personally. I like to have fresh clean clothes when I get into my nice clean bed.

Ditto!!! Actually, I'm on the other side of the spectrum. I usually look twice and think it's ridiculous when little infants and small babies are all decked out. I mean it can't be comfortable or practical for diaper changes! Why does a 3 month old need to be in tights and "shoes" (just as an example). I think babies should live in onesies and sleep n plays! What I have DS in during the day and night are usually interchangeable!

I don't think people care about infants wearing pajamas out. They sleep often and need to be super comfortable. They also make messes often. It's older kids and adults people are likely referring to. I know I am.

What's the big deal? Pajamas serve the same purpose as regular clothes. It isn't like the kid is going to a job interview.

Re: Just curious, am I just old-fashioned...

I have my own weird issues about wearing PJs outside. DS has never once worn PJs outside in his entire 26 months of life lol. I just feel like unless we get dressed we aren't really starting the day.

Even if we are up all night and going to the walkin hours at the ped, I get him dressed. I know it's totally weird. But everyone has their 'thing'.
