Scary story...About my granddaughter

Last night was one of the scariest nights of my life. My granddaughter Kylie was at my holuse with my daighter. Things were fine all day. After dinner my daughter gave Kylie some grapes. She was sitting right next to me on the couch and my daughter was down in the basement. Well, all of sudden I looked over at her and she had this horrible expression on her face and drool was coming out of her mouth. I realized the grape was stuck in her throat. I grabbed her and jumped up holding her over my arm, ran to the basement door and screamed for my daughter. She came up Kylie was gasping for breath. The color drained from her face and her lips turned blue. My daughter freaked for a moment then sat down and put her on her stomach over her knee. She begain hitting her back and I somehow got my arm underneath and pushed up on her stomach and ...........the grape popped out. We all took CPR but we panicked for just a second. She has been eating whole grapes for a couple of months and has always been very careful, taking little bites. Well, you know we'll be cutting her grapes and everything she eats very small now. She cried and cried for the longest time. My son in law was on his way home and my husband was out. Then we noticed blood coming from her mouth and she had this gurgling sound. We took her to the emergency room and they checked her out. The dr. said he thought she bit her cheek and thats where the bleeding came from. They xrayed her neck/throat and chest to make sure there was not another piece stuck anywhere. The poor thing was so exhausted. We didn't get home till around 11:30 last night. We thought it was over but then she woke with a fever this morning that went up to 102 in a matter of a few hours. So we took her to the dr. and he thinks it's unrelated to last night. She probably has a viral thing going on. All i can is thank GOD I was sitting next to her. If I had left her to go to the bathroom or walk out of the room, I don't want to think about how different the outcome would have been. She will not be left alone in a room with food again for quite awhile. I still can't get the look on her face out of my head. I don't know what we would have done if something horrible happened to her. I hugged her alot more today.

glad she's ok......

grapes is on the list that needs to be cut up(yet sometimes daycare providers don't even realize/follow it) , along with carrots too.

there's a list by age:

Re: Scary story...

Thank you for sharing that and I am so glad she is ok. I have read that after severe choking, you should always go to the emergency room b/c the throat can swell due to inflammation. I am so glad she is ok and I am a big fan of NO WHOLE GRAPES (like forever). My DD is almost 4 and I still won't give her whole grapes. They freak me out too much so thank you for sharing your painful scary story with us.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know how much you love your granddaughter and i am so glad she is ok.

Scary story...About my granddaughter

Ugh!!! So scary!! Thank goodness she is okay!!

Grapes, carrots (even cooked) and hot dogs are three things I make sure I cut up for DS. I get so worried he's going to choke!! Just a few weeks ago he gagged on an animal cracker and threw up all over.

Again, so happy that she is okay!! Chat Icon

Re: Scary story...About my granddaughter

Thanks everyone. Yes it was the most scary thing and the thought of what could have happened, well that's even more scary. We are beating ourselves up now for letting her eat whole grapes, knowing it can cause choking. She was just always so good about taking little nibbles of them. But we'll be cutting them from now on.

Re: Scary story...About my granddaughter

That is so scary. I'm glad she is doing well now. Grapes, carrots, hotdogs, peanut butter, mozeralla sticks and balloons are all choking hazards. I will not let my girls have any those things for a very long time. They also not allowed in licensed daycares
