Hi Ladies,
sorry to crash - im a ftm and am wondering around what age a child sits in a highchair to eat?

the background behind me asking is that my MIL said when shes sees us Christmas she will be giving us an old family hand-me-down high chair that is from her great grandmother...she said its a plain wood highchair with a belt/harness type thing that you push up to a table (no tray or any attachment). we live in a one bedroom apartment, not due until February and so we honestly dont have the space to hold onto it if the baby wont use it til 8-10 months old. We have a terrible relationship so i know if i dont take it christmas i need a valid reason (ie, the baby wont need it until they are at least xx months old so we will get it from you over the summer).

thanks

Re: highchairs

We started using it when DS was around 6 months old, which is when we started solids. I know some people start solids earlier though.

Honestly I don't think I'd feel comfortable using an old high chair like that. I'd worry that it's not safe, and also the baby will have to eat right off the table which will make a giant mess. Having a tray is so nice b/c you can rinse it off, or put it in the dishwasher.

Re: highchairs

We didn't start solids till 6 months so that is when we started. If space is an option, just tell her you got a fisher price space saver. We love ours!

Re: highchairs

Maybe you can tell her that you'd rather get one that attaches to a chair so that it doesn't take up any space? Or a say a friend bought one for you?

I hate pushy people with their old hand-me-downs! My MIL has this hideous old desk that she's dying to give us, but I keep saying DS isn't old enough yet. Not sure how much longer I can put it off!

I told her we already have one from my aunt (which is actually the truth_ and that we are tight on space since we are in the apartment. she said no you dont need your aunts, this is a family heirloom and i want my grandkids to use it and their kids to use it so please keep it in the family. can you store it at your parents house or somewhere?

i would take it to keep the peace, but not use it or I would have DH make a stink once he saw it.

thats the problem...my mom lives in a queens apartment too so storage is an issue. based on all these responses i can def tell her we dont need it until the baby is about 6 months old - so we will get it from her summer 2013 - and then either avoid her or pray she forgets

Re: highchairs

Here is really good ammo for you...

I can tell you that one of my preemie twins still could not use that kind of high chair at 11 months. She does not sit well and needs the support of the back and the tray. She can crawl etc, but not sit in a chair like that.
We started solids at 4 months adjusted, but should have waited till 6 months and I'm very happy we have regular highchairs!

Why doesn't she keep it at her house that way when you go to visit her she will have something to seat the baby? My MIL and my mom both have highchairs so that DS can eat at their tables. If she doesn't use that one, she'll just end up buying another one.

I second the idea to keep it at MIL's house so baby can eat there!

DS#2 is 4.5 months and we have the Graco with the five point harness and tray and he still slumps to the side in it. We just tried putting him in it yesterday just to see how he was in it but we aren't starting solids until 6 months. I personally would be worried about safety, I like the 5 point harness in the Graco because it can also be used without the shoulder straps when they are a little older, it's all vinyl so everything wipes down and the tray goes in the dishwasher when filthy or gets a simple wipe down if not so dirty. It's 2 years old, on our second kid and still looks brand new.

they recommend not starting solids till 6 months now - so august is earliest you will need it. plus i would say space is an issue and you were planning on getting one that goes on a chair - fisher price has a nice one

I like this idea, as we keep high chairs at both sets of grandparents houses too.

To answer your original question, we started using ours at 6 months when we started solids...

I doubt your DC will start using that chair until 8 months. And, honestly, you probably won't even won't to use it then. Can't your MIL keep it at her house to use there?

This! We have the Fisher Price Space Saver high chair bc we have no where to store a high chair. Plus, you can use it at her house when yu go there. Let her deal with the mess since there is no tray. Chat Icon

And trust me - she won't forget about it. This is something she's been waiting for a grandchild to use and it will get used in some way, shape or form.
