How many IUIs did you do before IVF?
I have my RE and I am going through all the tests now to find out why I am not pregnant after 14 months.
My blood work is fine, HSG was good, I have an ultrasound tomorrow. If they find nothing wrong, and I have unexplained IF my doc said that protocol is:
Clomid and IUI, if that doesn't work then we move onto Injectables and IUI. Then if that doesn't work IVF.
She said she doesn't like to do too many IUI's for unexplained IF because they cost money and don't have a great success rate.
So I was wondering how many IUI's did you do and why?
ETS: I only have $10k life time of IF benefits, so I don't want to waste money on anything that doesn't have a great success rate.

How many IUIs did you do before IVF?
I did 6 IUI's before moving onto IVF...we only did clomid & femara since I responded really well to them...I had to have 6 IUI's for my insurance to cover IVF...if I didnt have an insurance issue I would have moved on earlier...maybe after 4.
I see you have a max...I prob wouldnt want to do too many IUI's since it will eat into your max...I would prob do 2-3 before moving on

How many IUIs did you do before IVF?
i did 4...all with injectables. i only have one tube so we went right to the injectables in hopes that i'd create several follicles on the side where i do have a tube. all of them were BFN's for me but that is probably more b/c of the tube issue. my insurance covers unlimited IUI's so that's why we did 4. and honestly, if i had both tubes, i probably would've done a couple more. does your insurance cover IUI's at all?

We did 3 clomid IUI's, took a long break where I actually conceived and then had a mc, then moved on to IVF.

I am thinking 2 or 3 as well. My RE said it is really up to me in the long run, but she doesn't want to waste my money.

May seem like a silly question, but has your husband had an SA? You need to have that before any further testing on you.
IUIs can work, so I don't know why your dr sounded so negative. I got pg on my 3rd IUI (2 clomid failed, first injectable worked). We were willing to do 4 IUIs.

We were mostly dealing with Male IF so we did 1 IUI just to make sure we covered all our available bases before moving on IVF w/ICSI.

i was going to ask this as well. definitely have you husband get a SA before moving on. IUIs can work but if youre dealing with MF then your chances are much lower.

Not a silly question at all. He has had a SA done and everything checked out. This was back in February and was done in NY, I now live in CA. He just had another done last week and I will get the results tomorrow.
This is all going on that I will be diagnosed with unexplained IF, since I am dealing with secondary IF.
She didn't seem down on IUI's she just gave me that statistics, and said I can do as many as I want, but she doesn't like doing them cycle after cycle, because the stats aren't that great.
If there is something else wrong, i.e. something from my previous c-section, my husbands SA comes back abnormal, the protocol will change.
I know IVF is way more involved, but being that my insurance is limited I also don't want to blow through all of it on IUI's if the stats aren't high. If I have to pay 100% out of pocket, I will only have one shot at IVF.

Finally when I did ivf it worked the first time.

same situation here but we have done 8. moving onto ivf next month.
if i were in your position i would just move onto IVF so you dont blow through your allowance. good luck with your decision

Ok makes total sense. Well, I'd try at least 3 IUIs b/c they are MUCH easier, and the stats say if it's going to work, they should work in the first 4.

I also have unexplained infertility. I did 4 IUI's then 1 IVF. My doctor would have let me go to IVF after 2 but I think I was in denial.
It depends how aggressive you want to be. With only 10K I would do it sooner.
Also, not sure if you want to look into it but I have been enrolled in a study called the AMIGOS trial studying women with unexplained infertility. The study is out of Yale but they are doing it at sites all over the country. Here is a link about it http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01044862
You have to jump through a few hoops to see if they will accept you but all monitoring, medications, and IUI's are covered up to a total of 4. If you could do something like this you could save your $ for IVF and try free IUI's first. You get randomized to one of three drugs (Clomid PO, Femara PO or Menopur injections). The study is looking to find which drug works best for women with unexplained IF. So far just at my office they have had a 40% success rate of women getting pregnant in the study. Although I am on IUI #3, i am still hoping I can be one of those BFP's.

They recommended it after 3 months. I thought that was too soon plus we had changed up some treatments so I wanted to give that a try. We ended up doing about 8 cycles over about 11 mo. Some clomid, some femara, 1 injectable. Some were 1iui, some 2iui and some none. And some months were break months.

three and then an IVF failure and more IUIs and an IVF failure and more IUIs and back to IVF
it's not the traditional way but there was poking and prodding and tinkering in between to figure out what was going on, so it involved bouncing back to IUIs a few times.

How many IUIs did you do before IVF?
We have severe MFI so we went directly to IVF. If we had another choice, I would have done at least 3-4 IUIs first - they are much less expensive and invasive than IVF.
As much as IVF is "easier" than I thought it would be, I would have preferred to avoid it. You are on a higher dosage of drugs, you are constantly at the doctor, and you need to have surgery to remove the eggs. My DH said when I was put under that is when he was like "Oh shit - this is real."
So far, we have done 2 IVF cycles and both were BFN so not everyone is lucky enough to get pregnant on the first, second, third, etc go around. I think it is something people should NOT rush into and people need to remember it is not a guarantee that you will in fact get pregnant.

My initial diagnosis was PCOS. We started with IUIs and since I did not respond to the pills, we moved straight to injectables. On my 3rd round, I got pregnant. We had a boy, who I lost at 17wks pregnant because of severe complications. Soooo back for more IUIs. I got pregnant on my 3rd again... (so 6 IUIs total) but that pregnancy was a chemical.
At that point, we did lots of testing and found that I have several clotting issues. Since we had been on the road for a year at that point, plus the additional issues, we were told that moving onto IVF would allow us to move on with our lives the fastest.  (sorry, that part always makes me laugh)
So, to answer your question.... 6 total IUIs, with some pregnancies in between.

but i knew after like 4 we needed ivf..i wish we went sooner

Total was 11 IUI's all medicated and over the course of 2-3 years....
Our insurance (at the time) was 10K max and had to have 6 IUI' before they would cover IVF... we choose to pay OOP for the other IUI's to not waste insurance $$$
We WERE "unexplained IF" for 4+years until APRIL 2012 when we did the SCSA DNA Fragmentation Sperm Analysis...and found out we have MIF...had we known this prior we would have saved a TON of time, dr. appointments, $$$$, etc. and had gone straight to IVF/ICSI...
I suggest paying the $400 and get the SA from www.SCSA.com ---pending results of that then I would decide to do 3 IUI's then move to IVF or go straight to IVF...
Just bc DH has a SA that came back "fine" doesn't mean that his DNA is "fine" We learned that they long and hard way...My DH count, motility, morphology was all PERFECT....the SCSA test revealed he had 30.9% DNA Frag. and they highly recommend IVF/ICSI and skip trying on your own/IUI...
Just food for thought :)

I did 6. We were going to move onto IVF after that, but I ended up getting pregnant on the 6th IUI.
According to the finance person at my RE's my insurance wouldn't approve IVF until we did 6 IUIs, otherwise I think I would have moved on sooner.

I have secondary IF, with that in mind would you still recommend the test for DH? I should also add, I got pregnant first shot, MC, had some complications then got pg first shot after the complications, that was 3 years ago. Now it has been 14 months.
So being I got pregnant twice with DH, would you still go for the test?

0 IUIs, jumped right into IVF. I have $30k lifetime insurance coverage, which is 3 rounds of IVF. Our issue is male factor (low count and low motility) so IUIs wouldn't "solve" our issue. I was also 34 when I did my first cycle, so not really all that young to be spending too much time on something the RE said would probably not work. IVF was successful for us.
