Hospital staff over holiday weekend
I clearly have too much time on my hands..but i'm really wondering if the staff at hospital will be bad during a holiday weekend??? Anyone know?? I'm thinking maybe the (senior) best nurses get the days off?

Re: Hospital staff over holiday weekend
I would say that there is less staff on holidays.
I was induced the week of Thanksgiving and my OB warned me about this.

Re: Hospital staff over holiday weekend
When my dr. went to schedule my csection, the date he would have picked fell on Memorial Day so he said we had to push it forward a day because they dont schedule things on holidays. So Im assuming the staffing is cut down at least a little.

Re: Hospital staff over holiday weekend
DS1 - born Memorial Day weekend at LIJ. Was very busy that weekend. I think it was more b/c there were a lot of births then. A bit insane. Nurses were still great though. Hated LIJ Maternity ward at that time. Too packed and so much going on. No good waiting area and they were strict
DS2 - right after 4th of July I had to sched my csection b/c of the holiday. It was at a hospital in NJ though and so much nicer. Private rooms and nice maternity ward.

Re: Hospital staff over holiday weekend
I had DD May 26th...the wednesday of the week of memorial day weekend. I didn't notice less staff, but what I did notice was the hospital was packed!! When I asked the nurses why she said the doctors wanted to get in c-sections before the long weekend. lol i wonder if that was really true, but i would tend to believe it.

Re: Hospital staff over holiday weekend
Not necessarily true. My Dh works in healthcare and most people get every other holiday off, so you will have a decent mix. People arent really vying to.have off for Memorial day, theyd much rather fight over who getsnoff for Christmas and Thanksgiving

Re: Hospital staff over holiday weekend
Ds was born Jan 2nd and there was a definite difference between my stay with him and when I had dd in the middle of September. With ds I couldn't even see the LC when i had ds. Some nurses tried to help but it really was night and day. With dd I felt I was better cared for. This baby will be the middle of August. I am glad to be avoiding Labor day.

Re: Hospital staff over holiday weekend
My friend is a dr at Lij and she doesn't get a say in what holiday they have off they rotate so u will likely have similar staff to non holiday. Lots of accidents and whatnot happen over holidays so they wouldn't be short staffed. Or the dra are on call

Re: Hospital staff over holiday weekend
my daughter was born over martin luther king jr weekend. i dont think there were that many lactation consultants there. i took a breastfeeding class, but not LC's came to my room to check on me and i think they ususally do that. i was bummed about it. this time, i am doing my research ahead of time to find a lactation consultant in my area.

Re: Hospital staff over holiday weekend
I don't think the staff will be bad necessarily. My MIL and aunt are nurses and my sister is a PA. They all had to work some holidays, no matter what their level of seniority was at the time. All of them were favorites in their dept b/c they'd all volunteer to work Christmas (we're Jewish )

I had my son December 22 and was in for Christmas weekend at LIJ. The staff was not bad, it was very quiet and all the nurses were great.

my sister delivered both her kids over July4th and Memorial Day weekends....there wasn't really a lack of staff, and she got her favorite OB both times.

Re: Hospital staff over holiday weekend
My oldest was born the Saturday of Labor day weekend & honestly I did not notice a difference.
I actually think the hospital had less staff when I delivered my youngest in July.

Re: Hospital staff over holiday weekend
I was a nurse in the hospital for many years, all nurses, no matter what level of seniority are required to work the same amount of holidays and weekends. We staffed weekends and holidays the same as any other day. So you shouldn't notice a difference. The only reason I could think the doc would say they don't do c-sections that day is because the doc doesn't want to work that day and would like to try and be off if possible...
