Daycare moms - napping for 2 and 3 yr olds

Could you please share how long your daycare lets your child nap? My DS is in the 1.5 -2.5 yr old room at the moment, and they nap for 2 hours. I thought that when he moves up to the 2.5-3.5 class in February, that they go down to 1 hour. I was wrong - everyone in the entire school naps from 12-2. I do not think he needs that long of a nap and it's causing major bedtime issues for us. He's simply not tired until 10 or 11pm and it's throwing our entire household into a tailspin. He used to go to bed at 8 and slept til 6 or 7am. Now he goes to bed at 10-11 and he will sleep until 7 (in our bed UGH that's another issue).

Ok so how long does your 2 or 3 yr old nap at daycare?

In the waddler room, which was a little over 1 - 2 he napped for 2 hours.
Now I think it's 1.5
He's 2yrs 7 months.

Sometimes he sleeps longer and sometimes shorter.

If you don't want him napping too long can you ask them to wake him?
I know the staff needs that down time for lunchbreaks, getting stuff together for class, etc.

He is 26 months and naps for about 2 1/2 hours. They don't wake the kids up, sometimes the entire class will be awake except for one kid still sleeping.

We've been really lucky... one the weekends he usually sleeps from 1-4:30 and then goes to bed at 8.

Our daycare has 2 hrs blocked for nap/independent play in the 2 and 4 year old rooms.

I'd talk to them and mention that you dont' want him napping that long. My friend did that with her older DD (her son was in DS' class) because of the same reason and they shortened her nap time.

I don't know if it's a set time.
All I know is my DD does whatever she wants.
Some days she doesn't nap at all, some days it's 25 min, some days more than 2 hours.
She isn't one for rule following! Chat Icon

Re: Daycare moms - napping for 2 and 3 yr olds

I mentioned shortening it to his AM & PM teachers and they were like oh no - she's not going to go for that (the director, who owns the place). Plus I know they have lunch breaks etc that revolve around nap time. But if they're not willing to compromise I feel like I am going to have to just keep him up later and deal with it. Because other than that I've been very happy with the school.

I agree with Linda.

If you don't nap or wake up before the end of naptime at our daycare, they try to get the kids to rest quietly - maybe that's an option.

2 hours, but if they don't want to nap they have designated quiet activities that the kids can do. Maybe you center can set up something like that? A little spot in the room set up with puzzles, books, etc.

Ann is in the 2-3 year old room and they go down for naps after lunch (can be as early as 11:30) and I believe they wake them up if they are still napping at 3PM.

Her daily sheet usually has her naps as noon to 2:30.

Samantha is in the Pre-k1 room. "nap" time in all rooms is 12-2. However, that does not necessarily mean they have to sleep. I know that mostly Samantha does not sleep, but they have to be quiet. If she does sleep, she will sleep only 30 minutes. I do believe though that they do not allow any of the kids to sleep past 3:00.

Re: Daycare moms - napping for 2 and 3 yr olds

It's hard. In a daycare center, they usually have standard "quiet time" for the entire school. I know in my DC daycare, the entire school has lights out from 12-2 every day. Same rules apply for my 2 year old and my 4 year old.

My first thought is if your DS is sleeping the entire time, he needs the rest. I know sometimes they will let the kids who don't sleep do something quiet like read books or do puzzles at a table. But it sounds like they would actually have to wake your DS up to make him have a shorter nap. How do you think he would react to that? I imagine if he throws a tantrum at being woken up, they might not want to do that because it will disrupt the rest of the kids in the room.

DS will sleep as long as he wants. His norm is 2 1/2 hours but he has been known to sleep for 3 hours on a regular basis.

I'm one for not waking a sleeping child - If he is sleeping that long, then he probably needs it. I also think a 2 hour nap for a 2/3 year old is not out of the norm. What time does he wake up in the morning? Is there someway to get out extra energy in the late afternoon before dinner? What is his schedule on the weekends?

Re: Daycare moms - napping for 2 and 3 yr olds

I wouldn't want to disturb anyone else in the room - I like the idea of quiet time. This is why I have to speak to the director. It's not a huge building so I have to see if anything can be arranged. I'm sorry but I think he's sleeping 2 hours at naptime because he is up all frigging night now Chat Icon I know my kid like you all know yours...and his teacher told me before we were having sleep issues he took forever to fall asleep - now he goes right out because he's tired from the night before. It's a vicious cycle that I need to break.

Weekends he won't nap in his bed so if we go out in the car he usually will nap for an hour in the carseat or stroller. Before dinner, well now it's dark out, so we can't really go outside to play, it's too cold, and I get home around 6...he is a bundle of energy til 10pm-ish..literally, jumping on the bed Chat Icon Chat Icon

DS is in the 2-3 year old room and naps 2 hours...usually between 12 and 2.
