Egg allergy mamas...Q about MMR and flu shot...

My DS was all set to get the MMR and flu shot at his one-year check-up last week...until his egg allergy was confirmed that day.

The pediatrician said the flu vaccine is contraidicated for those with egg allergies...so no flu shot for him at all. I guess that's fine since my DDs got their flu vaccines (and since it's the same strain as last year's, I still have immunity from my shot last year...).

As for the MMR, he said that he will get it, but I have to block out 90 minutes of our time to sit in the office after the shot so as to make sure there isn't a reaction, etc. He told us next month. However, DS will be 13 months then and I can't IMAGINE sitting there for 1.5 hours...especially if he isn't walking yet.

How did you guys and your doctors handle these thing?

DS will be 1 in two weeks and was also just recently diagnosed with an egg allergy (level 2). My ped says that the flu shot does not have enough egg in it to cause a reaction but we do have to sit in the office for 30 minutes after to watch for a reaction.

I didn't ask about the MMR but I can't imagine waiting 90 minutes either! That's an insane amount of time with a squirmy baby unless you bring another family member for help and a metric &%$# ton of toys or books.

I'm curious to what other allergy mamas say.

How did you know that they were allergic to eggs? DD has had things with eggs in it with no problem. She hasn't had straight up eggs yet. What should I look for? Thanks!

DS is allergic to eggs and our allergist said that he can have shots, there is no issue he said. Now I am worried that I was misinformed. DS has a milk, egg, and tree nut allergy. When he has milk he gets small hives around his mouth but when he had eggs the hives go all over his face, even near his eyes, this happened when I had him taste mayo once, the tiniest bit before I knew he had the allergy.

We haven't had the MMR yet but I think it's at the next appt, I'll have to call up this week and ask. Thanks for letting me know about the MMR and the flu shot.

It might depend on the degree of the egg allergy. I was recently speaking with 2 moms who have DC with egg allergies. They can eat things that have egg cooked in them (cookies etc) but they can't have raw eggs without getting rashes and hives. Both of them get both the MMR and the flu shot. They just do it in the doctors office and they do have a waiting period (not sure how long). I would speak with your DC's allergist b.c maybe it would be better to get those shots with them than your regular ped just in case.

DD has an egg sensitivity, but we are handling shots same as your ped recommended. No flu shot, and MMR under observation (but I haven't done it yet...DD is almost 16 months).

Re: Egg allergy mamas...Q about MMR and flu shot...

DS' MMR was administered at around 13/14 months by his allergist - our ped wouldn't do it, so we had to pick it up & bring it with us to the allergist. They gave him the shot in 2 doses. At first it was a small amount & then we waited 20 min. After that he received the rest of the vaccination & we had to wait 30 min. The entire thing took maybe 65 min. total (incl. waiting in the lobby, etc). We didn't do the flu shot.

The good news is that DS went from a severe egg allergy to a barely registered allergy in the course of the year between his 12 & 24 month appts at the allergist. We can now give him small amounts of egg. In my experience, I've found that when it comes to these shots & skin & food challenge testing they've always told me to leave a HUGE amount of time available for the visit, but when it comes down to it the appts usually only take 50-75% of the amount they told me to block out Chat Icon

That's interesting, I remember reading that as of 1998, the MMR was no longer considered condraindicated for patients with egg allergies. I'm trying to find where I read that now- I'll get back to you if I find it!

The first couple of times DS had tried eggs honestly, I didn't notice a reaction. He didn't really seem to care for them so I sort of gave up once I thought he was in the clear. A couple of weeks later I fed him a good amount of egg salad--which he liked. About an hour later (yeah, at a store Chat Icon ) he was projectile vomiting. I honestly just thought "projectile" was sort of a euphemism people used for a lot of vomit. No, it actually is PROJECTILE! Later on that day, he developed hives all over.

About 6 weeks later, we had his blood tested and sure enough...egg allergy. The pediatrician said some kids are able to tolerate eggs as an ingredient, but not whole.

Re: Egg allergy mamas...Q about MMR and flu shot...

Our pediatrician will not do the flu shot for my egg allergic son but she is supportive of the allergist's instructions. Our allergist gives it but has us wait 45 minutes.

According to my MIL, there is no such thing as an egg allergy anyway Chat Icon . Yeah, I have to throw in a comment about this any time this discussion arises. My own mom tests positive for a slight egg allergy and will eat eggs but is afraid of the vaccine. She wishes I would skip it for my son but she knows that the allergist's office is probably the safest place.

My son is considered anaphylactic but the Dr. says he can have foods with trace amounts of egg. I do see a small rash sometimes when I think that foods were too high in egg content. I then cut out those foods or foods like them. So far we've done well with this elimination process. If a food he gets has any egg in it, it will be a very slight amount and under supervision.
