Re: Why is it ok to drink on prom night...
I am a teacher for a high school. I am also a class advisor and this year I did the junior prom, went to the senior prom, and will be doing the senior prom next year. At least at my school district, drinking is strongly discouraged. A member of the nassau county da's office comes to speak with the students about driving while impaired and other things. The message is very powerful. This year, the da brought actual evidence from the wrong way driver on the meadowbrook that killed the limo driver and Katie Flynn. Our school hosts a "pre-Prom" to prevent drinking. ALSO, AT the prom, the cops are there checking EVERY Limo and car. The cops even went to where some of the kids went after the prom. I think this is much more of an effort than in years past. I know when I went to the prom, they didn't even do half of this. In addition, with social host laws, parents are really MORONIC if they give their teenage kid or friends drinks.

Re: Why is it ok to drink on prom night...
I drank on prom night. My DH bought it for us since he was older. My father would have flipped if he knew, my mother probably would have been upset but not too mad. They wouldn't have ever bought it for us.
I won't be buying it for my DS.

I really don't care what people do or have done. Its illegal. I won't condone it when my kids are going to their proms. Will they do it anyway? Who knows? Odds are they will but I'll be damned if I am going to supply it to them or anyone else and risk losing everything of value in my life should someone get hurt. Im an old fart that way.

I drank long before my prom and at both my Jr and Sr prom. My parents didn't provide it for me. Nor would I have asked them to.
ITA!
Yup, my parents had no idea
Same here.
Same here. Although I have to admit with my family being European. I was allowed to have wine and stuff at family parties. However, never ever would they allow it at prom or stuff with other people's children.

I don't think it's a rigth but most kids do. I didn't drink on prom night (my limo driver was a family friend and then we went to a club but I behaved.) Prom weekend (in Belmar) however, was a different story! If my parents only knew

I do not think it is okay to drink at the prom, but then again I did not drink until I was in college.

More highschools need to run their proms like my highschool did.
The first part of the night was dinner and dancing at the South Street Seaport. Then we got on a boat.. a boat that didn't dock until 5:00 AM!!
I agree with this.
The HS I teach at has a HUGE after prom party at the HS. Literally, EVERYONE goes to the after prom - they are even allowed to go if they do not attend the prom. It is from 12 am - 4am. They have a music, food, a hypnotist, thousands of dollars worth of prizes (i-pods, computers, gift cards, flat screen tvs, etc). From what 99% of my students have told me, they just go home afterwards.
That's what my HS did. It works - I didn't drink or have s*x my prom night. I went home and straight to bed afterward!

Re: Why is it ok to drink on prom night...
I dont think that its so much ok to drink on prom night - while there may be those who do think its ok.
I know when I was in HS some of my friends parents wanted them to be safe so they prefered it done in front of them.. Im not saying I agree.
My parents didn't let me go to any of my friends house for pics or anything. They didnt want any drama so I couldn't let me ride in anyone's limo. I had one for just me and my date. My parents were a little OD... the limo driver had specific instructions no addt'l passengers or stops or drinks wht so ever.

Re: Why is it ok to drink on prom night...
I drank on prom night and the night after as well...we went for a weekend in the Hamptons. However, my parents definitely did not "let" me. They didn't know.
I had been drinking for a few years at that point though, so it wasn't this big, new experience that my friends and I had to do on prom night. It was just like other parties we were having at the same.

Ditto.
But I guess if the question is as a parent, why do you think it's okay for prom night to provide booze to your kid, well, I don't and I wouldn't.

Re: Why is it ok to drink on prom night...
My parents didn't allow me to do any such thing on prom night.........or any night for that matter. As a parent now myself I can tell you (even though my DD is only 2 1/2) she will NOT be "allowed" to drink on prom night. Now, I am not naive enough to think she won't try a drink somehow or someway that night BUT I will NOT be the one providing her with access to drinks, prom or no prom. That's just terrible parenting IMO.

Same here.
Our town has worked to combat this issue by having prom on a school night (last year I think it was on a Thurs but, this year it was on a Sun) and making it mandatory to show up the next day.

our graduation was actually the day after prom making it impossible for kids to do the whole going away thing - that was there way to try to stop drinking

This is what they did at my HS (don't know if they still do or if this is the HS you teach at) but that didn't stop us from stopping somewhere between prom and the party after to drink.
My parents knew I drank (socially!) in HS and before I was 21. Did they like it? I'm sure they didn't. But was that going to stop me at 17? No way.
