Why is it ok to drink on prom night...

I don't get why parents think it is ok to let their 17/18 yr. olds drink because it is prom night.

Last time I heard the drinking age was 21.

Sorry, just my 2 cents as I have seen so many kids pictures lately of after prom.

I have no idea. I did not drink after the prom, nor will I be buying anything for my kids to drink after prom.

What makes you think parents are "letting" them drink? Is it possible that these kids are doing this without parental consent?

I drank long before my prom and at both my Jr and Sr prom. My parents didn't provide it for me. Nor would I have asked them to.

Yeah, exactly. My sister and her friends went to a "club" for after prom but they didn't drink... well... allegedly.

The pictures I saw had the parents in them (at least the mother). A big party at someone's home.
Granted they showed everyone sleeping over but still....they are underage.

An acquaintance said her son and his friends rented a brownstone in Brooklyn and one of the 21 year old boyfriends supplied the alcohol.

I think she's said they're going to do it anyway, so she'd rather they be safe in one place.

As a parent, I could never trust my 17/18 yr. old child (or I should say not trust the 21 yr. old hosting the party) to go to a party like that. With me, on NYE, a drink or maybe even 2 but I don't get why it is ok to do that when it is illegal to do any other time.

They are not allowed to drink in a bar even if a 21 yr. old went with them.

Sorry, it is just a very sore subject for me and my dh and we have seen too much of underage drinking lately with the parents fully aware.

Re: Why is it ok to drink on prom night...

More highschools need to run their proms like my highschool did.

The first part of the night was dinner and dancing at the South Street Seaport. Then we got on a boat.. a boat that didn't dock until 5:00 AM!!

If anyone drank/had sex/did drugs, they did it before the prom.. not during and not after because it was daylight already.

To answer the OP, no it's not okay to drink on prom night. But I never sought my mom's permission before drinking when I was a teenager.

At my prom, everyone in our limo was drinking - even me. No, our parents didn't know about it. And no, nothing bad happened to us - we were responsible about it (we went to a beach and spent the night there just drinking and talking, etc).

And no, stuff like that doesn't bother me as long as the teenagers who drink aren't getting behind the wheel of a car.

My parents did not allow me to drink on prom night, but I did.

There have always been parents that allow or supply it. Who knows why they do it. Guilt about something else, trying to be friends with their kids instead of parents who knows but they were around when i was kid and I bet they still are.

Same, although my parents definitely did know that we were drinking and were pretty okay with it. I think the fact that the drinking age is 21 is a little ridiculous to begin with. On a special occasion, as long as they were being safe, I think I'd be okay with it. That being said, I'm not a parent yet so who knows?

Re: Why is it ok to drink on prom night...

I don't think ALL parents of kids who drink on prom night say it's OK to do so.

LOADS of kids do things their parents tell them not to do, on a daily basis.

I think kids are going to drink if they want to, whether or not their parents allow it.

I drank as a teen. My first drink was freshman year. I also went to a ton of keg parties during my HS years. No parent was supplying the alcohol. There's usually a store somewhere that will sell to a minor... or someone has an older sibling, fake id, etc. Just because someone is drinking doesn't mean the parent is supplying each time.

That being said.... i was allowed to drink around family, during holiday's and when we were out to dinner. My mother and my grandmother allowed it once I turned 17. Funny thing though... they didn't allow my OLDER brother to drink till he was 21 (he's a year older than me)... mostly because I was more "mature" than he is.

I think my mother knew I drank as a teen... but I can't remember for certain. I definitely didn't ask for permission to drink. If I wanted to drink, I drank.

I do not think it is okay to drink at the prom, but then again I did not drink until I was in college.

I agree with this.

The HS I teach at has a HUGE after prom party at the HS. Literally, EVERYONE goes to the after prom - they are even allowed to go if they do not attend the prom. It is from 12 am - 4am. They have a music, food, a hypnotist, thousands of dollars worth of prizes (i-pods, computers, gift cards, flat screen tvs, etc). From what 99% of my students have told me, they just go home afterwards.

Re: Why is it ok to drink on prom night...

My parents did not allow it, at all but I still did it. (nor did any of my parents friends that I can recall)

My graduation party . . .my Dad found out someone snuck beer into our backyard and asked them to leave! I was mortified but as a parent now, I 100% get why he did it!!

To each their own. I drank on prom night and my parents and friend's parents bought it for us. No one was driving. I don't know what I will do when my kids are old enough for prom.
