Who do I contact re: parking signs in front of home

The home we are purchasing has a sign in front that states there is no parking on the street from 8AM-4PM excluding weekends and holidays. I think it is to protect the block from people from the school around the corner parking there during the day- which I am grateful for...

However, is there someone I can call to find out about the possibility of being able to park in front of my own home during the day? We have three cars..one of which is a HUGE truck and I dont think they will all fit in the driveway. It has potential to be a logistical nightmare every morning with the jockeying of the cars Chat Icon Chat Icon

Any advice ? Chat Icon

I live in a village that doesn't allow you to be parked during those hours either (although there aren't any signs; it's an ordinance).. it's not enforced though.. only if someone calls to complain and EVERYONE parks on the street.. most park on the street over their driveways!

Re: Who do I contact re: parking signs in front of home

DH just got a $100 ticket for parking in front of our house during school hours. We are are going to fight the ticket then look to get the signs removed......it is only No Parking in front oh OUR house! The previous owners were crochety. Here we are trying to be good neighbors and not park in front of their homes and then we get screwed for it!

Good Luck!

ETA: We have been parking there for almost a year with no problem, we think the people down the around the block who have No Parking called and we got caught up in it.

Annddd...Sorry for turning your question into my vent!

I wouldn't count on it. Honestly if you are buying the home, you should be factoring in that this is the rule and there may likely not be any exceptions (otherwise they would allow parking by permit for residents, which they do not it sounds like). I would make sure before you buy the home, you find a way to make the parking work b/c odds are you won't be allowed the exception. I know plenty of areas that have this rule and it IS enforced, does not matter whose car it is.

You can try to fight it but you bought the house after the sign was installed.

In garden city (the village) there is no street parking either. Your own car or not. I don't know how people do it when they have parties.

By the way, have you looked into any rules which may prevent you from having a HUGE truck parked outside? What kinda truck is it exactly? Some towns restrict the parking of vehicles with commercial plates. Just a thought...

They allow cars for parties, overnight guests, etc. No issues there. You can call to let them know and they say ok, no prob if you are having overnight guests. For parties, they can tell when a party is going on and they don't bother the cars.

Re: Who do I contact re: parking signs in front of home

Its a pick up truck. Not a commercial vehicle.

the issue is really that its wide which means that I am not sure it will fit all the way up in the driveway (we have a side stoop that comes a little into the drive way possibly preventing a wide berth from pulling all the way up . So it may have to be the last car in the driveway which is a PITA because its the one driven the least. So every morning we would have to move it. In the grand scheme its not the biggest deal..its more annoying than anything.

And as far us having this issue factor into whether we buy the house or not- the contract is already signed- we love the house and location so there is no way that we are not buying. This parking thing is more of a PITA than a deal breaker..

As long as you are prepared to jockey the cars around daily. We just wanted to tell you the truth is that odds are you will not be able to leave your car out all day on a daily basis if those signs exist.

HTH and good luck!

Have you scoped out the house at different times of the day? During when they enforce the signs and after? That would give you a good indication of what you will see all day long.

Iknow strange to "stalk" your new house but worth it!

I havent done this yet but its a good idea..most people on the block dont park in front of their houses because they have driveways..I think we might even just leave his pick up truck at his parents house (1 min away) if it ends up being a problem.

I was talking to a friend and she said if the only time my car is in front when its not supposed to be is from 8-8:30am in the morning, it most likely wont be an issue unless the neighbors complain. Which I dont understand why they would when its not in front of their house, its in front of mine..but I guess you never know..

We'll see..I think I am going to play it by ear and see how it goes..

You will quickly learn that Neighbors have opinions about everything and that things you will say are trivial will bug the heck out of them. Just part of home ownership!!! I am thankful for our back fence EVERYDAY Chat Icon

Yeah, judging from many of the posts seen here and on FHF, it doesn't matter if you park in front of your house or somebody else's house, someone will be watching you and someone will probably be pizzed off about it. Sux.

Best of luck Chat Icon
