Re: epidural vs. natural POLL

I'm an epidural girl.

I need it to calm my anxiety of the whole ordeal. I will be the worst patient without it and the experience will be really bad for me. I totally need it and I know myself enough to be aware of that fact.

I am going to try my darndest for all natural. I'm a bit worried though because if my lower back & hip pain is any indication of a fraction of what i am to expect...I dunno if i can take it.

Re: epidural vs. natural POLL

The only reason I'm saying natural is b/c I'm scared of the epidural slowing down labor. I know it doesn't always happen, but I seem to hear it a lot.

this is the case for me...i don't want it to put me at higher rate for c-section. I'm trying to avoid the c word at all costs

I've been told that this isn't true at all.

In fact, they say that once the epidural is in place, it can help labor! I guess that since the mother is so relaxed, it offers the body a chance to do what it has to do without the stress of pain.

I have to say..both times for me...once I got that epidural at 3 or 4 cms i was able to sleep and relax without wincing in pain. And when i would be rechecked the progress was awesome.

You just really never know. C-sections happen for all kinds of reasons....but i honestly don't think there is a big correlation between an epi and labor being slowed!

Re: epidural vs. natural POLL

I am planning to not do an epidural but if I have to have pitocin which makes the contractions stronger and longer without all the benefits of oxytocin then I might end up doing one. .

I don't want to be controversial, but slowing down labor is one of the most common side effects of an epidural...among other undesirable outcomes, it can cause your contractions to slow down to the point that you are diagnosed with "failure to progress" or can cause them to be so weak that they don't dilate you effectively. There is a significantly higher C-Section rate when an epidural is used, for this and many other reasons.

I REALLY want to go all natural! I feel like it's a totally personal decision, and I know how proud I will feel if I am able to do it. With that being said, I have no idea what this pain is going to feel like, and I may cave and decide to get the epi, and Im ok with that, as long as I know I tried.

Re: epidural vs. natural POLL

I took an L&D class at our hospital before DD was born. It was once a week for 5 weeks. There were 8 couples in the class. 6 of us have had our babies so far.

I'm the only one who went drug-free.

Of the other 5, 3 of them ended up with emergency c-sections after they got the epidurals. All because progress stalled. One where the baby became in distress as well. I'm not saying this happened because of the epidural, it just happened after they each received it. I'm no doctor and I wasn't there. I'm sure that there have been women who didn't receive epidurals who also had progress stall and ended up with emergency c-sections. I just don't have enough of a sample size to discuss that.

One woman tore so badly during her v delivery, she wishes she had a c. Chat Icon She came home from the hospital with a catheter and bag she had to wear for 2 weeks because the tear was all the way up to her urethra. Horrible. Having a baby can definitely involve complications to mom's health and well-being.

I tore really badly and the stitching took over an hour, but despite that, I'm still really glad I didn't have the epidural. It hurt, yes, but now 7 weeks PP and despite the stitches and everything (including an episiotomy too), I am pretty much entirely healed up. And as much as I remember it hurting terribly, the pain is such a thing of the past now. I even re-read my birth story today and reading about the pain I was in makes me smile now, not regret it.

I was at the OB last week for my 6 w PP check-up and I asked him about the back pain I was having (I later figured out it was from bending over to rock DD all the time) and he said "well, you didn't have an epidural, so you shouldn't have back pain" -- you can check the parenting forum for the thread from last week... many women who got epidurals are still having recurring back pain at the site months later.

I have many, many friends who SWEAR by the epidural. They would never have considered getting pregnant in the first place without the possibility of having a less painful birth. I think technology is wonderful and I'm glad there's a way to give birth that doesn't hurt as much. I think it's a really, really tough decision to make before you're in the situation. It's great to have a plan and an idea of how you want things to go, but always keep an open mind.

For me, drug-free was not as bad as people said it was going to be. Labor was totally manageable. The pushing/delivery hurt like a b!tch, but once she was out, the pain was over (except for delivering the placenta... but they come push on your belly the whole next day, so the epidural isn't going to help you then).

Good luck ladies!!! I may have to reread this when we're ready for DC#2 in a few years lol.

I found this from cedar-sinai medical center. I remember my doctor telling me that people are misinformed today about epidurals. In HIS opinion (put "his" in caps because i obviously can't speak for other doctors!) he has seen the same amount of c-section rates in epidural use vs. non use...

Do epidurals slow labor?

Not usually. Old epidural techniques often slowed labor because much stronger local anesthetic solutions were used. Current techniques using dilute solutions usually do not lengthen labor. The pattern and frequency of contractions might be initially altered, but this is often followed by more efficient contractions that might shorten labor. It should be noted, however, that prolonged, painful labors are a frequent reason that patients request epidurals. Accordingly, epidurals are often used when labors are slow.

Re: epidural vs. natural POLL

I read so much about how epidurals combined with induction drugs are the reason that labor can be slowed down. You get the induction drug like pitocin, and the contractions are very strong...you can't take it...you get the epi...the epi can slow the labor down and the induction drug is increased...the epi is upped because the pain of the contractions can increase which makes the original epi amount wear off....then while you are not feeling the contractions with the increased epi, your baby is taking the beating and stress of it all.

That is where so many emergency c-sections come in, because the baby is in distress.

This is the reason (for me -- and what I have read and researched), that I will try my best to go natural...in hopes of avoiding a c/s if I can.

This is what I meant earlier. I'm actually more scared of pitocin than the epidural.

Re: epidural vs. natural POLL

I tried going natural. Made it to 7cm and I would have if I didn't have back pain. The back pain was awful.

I didn't read anything about epidurals or all the possibilities of getting a c which I was so against. Once your delivering you and the Dr will make the best decision for you and your baby. Your birthing plan can change in an instant. I never expected a vacuum had to be used. And everyone says vaginal delivery is so much better recovery wise. It wasn't for me. I don't even think of the pain now. The reward of my son far out way the pain and recovery I went through. And I would go through it all over again just to see my son's face for the first time. For you first time mommy's considering an epi, it didn't slow my progress down at all. It was in fact, a God send. If you've never experience labor, never say never. I probably would have jumped out the window of Good Sam had I not had an epi. Back labor is a nightmare!
