Ours is the same square feet but, it's a 4br 2ba cape.
We just began the process of renovating and we're going to have a 3br 3ba colonial and 2400 sq ft (we are just redormering and moving all of the bedrooms upstairs for more living space).

we have a split, a little over 1500 sq ft, but that does not include our400 sq ft basement that we and our subfloor which is a laundry room/office and a bathroom and is about 100 or so sq ft.
3 bedrooms 2 baths

2400 sq ft (1st & 2nd Floor). 5 BR 2 bath
Bought a house bigger than we need at the moment, but god willing we will grow into it soon enough & never need to move again.

When we all done renovating everything, we'll have (according to the town...  ) 7 bedrooms and 4 baths. We really have 3 bedrooms, a library, a toy room, an office and a mudroom.
Our septic system is based on the number of "bedrooms" times 4 people per BR, so we have a system that can handle 28 people!  
It was the only way we could get a permit..... and the plans had to allow room for expansion in the future, no less!

Probably about 2300-2400 square feet colonial, give or take. 4 bedrooms, 3 bath.
Then add another 800 square feet in the finished basement.
Big house.

And about 1300-1500 unfinished basement.
But planning on finishing about 1/2 the basement for a family room/bigger play area...I just ahve to convince DH!
