I saw this on HLN this morning. Certainly grateful we didn't opt for a dropside when I was pregnant with DS.

We still have a drop side. It was one of the ones recalled back in January. I got the repair kit for it. For those who have a drop side, just make sure you check the crib. I look at DS's crib daily to make sure something hasn't come loose. Anything can come loose at anytime...

My cousin is not listening to this :( My aunt has the crib from her kids (oldest is 27), and wanted to set it up at her house for her grandchild-to-be. My cousin, who is pregnant, has no problem with this. Their philosophy is that 4 children "slept in it and were fine". What else can I do, except pray that her baby really is fine in there?? I mean, in the very beginning the baby doesn't really move but eventually...my son who is 9 months, cruises in his crib and practically hangs on the railing. I'd never put him in that crib.

While I agree with you and would never chance putting my kid in that crib, I would bet that that crib is safer then one make last year. My mom had an old crib and all the parts that make it slide up and down are ALL METAL. There was not one peice of plastic on that crib. Even DD#1's crib from 10 years ago had the metal parts. The problem is all these companies going on the cheap and using plastic parts, that obviously can break. That is why this is a "new" problem! Nothing like saving a buck at the expense of your child's safety.

Re: ALL drop side cribs are banned. NEW INFO
I have a drop side crib that's about 12-13 years old. My SIL gave it to us. It was a VERY expensive crib at the time and is well made. It's different than the "newer" drop side cribs. I'm still using it and will still use it until DS grows out of it. If I can't drop the side down, I can't reach in to lay him down or pick him up. (It's a tall crib - about 4 feet high when up). I think you all have to look at what you have and assess if it's well made/built/assembled and make a decision for yourself. I do not fear his safety in the crib.
The only downside to the dropside crib is forgetting to put the side up - that's dangerous if I forget!!!! Thank goodness for my VM to double check!
