Little ones and public restrooms
So as DD approaches being ready to potty train - I have started to think about public restrooms. What do you do?? I would never sit on one of those toilets, let alone my child! So what do you do??? And I can't believe I never though of this before!

LIFESAVER - also handy to keep in your purse or glove compartment for when you are not near a bathroom. Plus they are disposable, so when you are done, you just throw it out.

I always put toilet paper around the seat and have them sit down. I bought one of those portable potty seats - but it was too much of a hassle for me to take out and clean all the time.

this is what i have always done - and what my mom 'taught' me to do.
they have done several studies regarding the cleanliness of bathrooms and the toilet is normally the cleanest. The door handles and faucets are the worst places in public restrooms.

I don't really have an issue with using public toilets unless they are of course disgusting.
There have been multiple studies done that you can't catch anything from a public toilet.
I never have.
I would let DC sit on the toilet. Honestly, I think by putting toilet paper on the seat you are taking more of a risk b/c you are touching the seat with your hands. Also it can make a lot more of a mess. I feel the same way about hovering.

100% right. Ive posted about this before...I signed up for Clorox's classroom program. They had a factoid that said that there are 400 times more germs on the top of a kid's desk in school than on a toilet seat. I mean how many surfaces does a butt really touch? I wouldn't put my kid or myself on a toilet seat with traces of urine or feces on it, but it is generally cleaner than surfaces that hands have touched. Lining with paper should be enough.

I still say ewwww....my issue being that DS has to hold on to the seat to keep from falling in and I would NEVER want him to put his hands on a public toilet seat.

And we wash our hands afterwards so that helps too.

Same. I have a portable potty too, but used that only for car or park emergencies where the was no bathroom.

ITA. Mine sit on it and even hold themselves up with their hands. I wash their hands right after so all is good.

this was something I worried about too, but it is not that bad at all I buy the seat liners that are pretty long so even DS's hands are covered when he's seating on the public tiolet. We also used a fold up potty seat for a while, but the past couple of weeks he refuses all potty seats and just wants to sit on the toilet so I always make sure I carry the liners when we are out. Then we wash really good and i use an antibacterial wipe on top of it LOL. I swear it's easier then I thought it would be

I have the toilet covers, but it still grosses me out, especially because he has to take a shoe off and the one pant leg off. Drives me crazy!

lol DS used to have to shed it all too (which also increased the gross factor), but daycare taught him to push his pants/underwear to the ankles and leave it on while he went. I had tried and he wouldnt listen, so I guess he needed someone else to show him. At home he will sometimes still shed all though.

We use Backyardigans potty toppers. They are expensive but they are thick and she doesnt touch the toilet with them. If i don't have one I just line the seat and scrub her hands after.

PRIMO Folding Potty with Handles, White granite
I keep it in the sturdy plastic bag it came with plus some travel Clorox wipes and hand wipes. It is super small and super easy to use!
Some people have posted they have it with characters as well!

I line the toilet with toilet paper and let her sit down. unless the bathroom is just totally gross...then I hold her over the toilet.

For my 4.5 yr old I carry around those disposable paper foam backed covers. For my newly training 2 yr old. I have the foldable seat and I paper before I put it down. He is so little without the seat he'd fall in.
We have this for the car....BEST.THING.EVER!
