Everyone pretty much covered it but I have to say that the first time I saw DD poop and caught her IN action, I honestly thought she was peeing! I was so confused! And she would poop and fill a diaper every single time she ate. . . so I don't even KNOW how I would be able to tell if she had diarrhea!

I totally agree with the advice Porrrus and mamakap have given you and would consult with a pediatric GI before taking the formula route since it seems like you are committed to BFing. If you start formula you take the chance that DC will get nipple confusion, your supply may dip, etc. Good luck!

thank you- yes, i really want to BF especially since its going well... my baby girl was born 6lbs. 4oz and @6 weeks she was 10lbs... the dr. is more than happy with her weight gain. Im not gonna make any changes to formua just yet...

hahahaah, yea thats happened to me tooo many times!! I open her diaper too soon and she is still going and poop goes everywhere... lol, good times

Yeah- that's not a reflux baby nor a baby with a milk allergy my love. You just have a NB with a strong personality. My second DD was that way and by 3 months turned into the SWEETEST most laid back kid.
Keep us updated..... I'll bet in the next 2 weeks you're going to see HUGE improvements.

hmm, i dont agree with this Jack had ZERO signs of anything wrong until 4.5 months. Gained like a champ (12.14lbs at 8 weeks) NEVER cried, never fussed, slept so well. None of that ever changed really. We just noticed blood in his stool and diarrhea. Took him to the doc and its a milk protein allergy. It doesnt have to be all as far as symptoms are concerned for the child to HAVE the allergy. They can show a few signs or all of them
Your best bet is to keep doing what you are doing and see a Ped GI!

I had a very similar concern.
I took a poo poo diaper to the pediatrician and she told me what I thought was diarrhea was totally normal breast fed poo.
DS poo went from seedy yellow to explosive liquid. This happened at 5-6 weeks.
He is always gassy. His gas is louder than mine. No vomiting.
My pediatrician was primarily concerned with what he looked like and told me to have plenty of dairy.
I do supplement with a touch 2oz of formula a day. I switched to similac sensitive.

I digress... See, we learn new things every day. I will say, my eldest has a very severe dairy allergy and never had issues with my BM. It wasn't until we gave her yogurt that we first saw a reaction. So you are right!

It was at night and the poo hit me in the leg... it squirted far! I couldn't believe it. They should write about that in those baby books.

If you have already cut the dairy out of your diet and are seeing a change, I would give it a little more time. My DD has a sensitivity to dairy protein. I'm not going to call it an allergy because it just made her very gassy and fussy. She also had extra explosive poops. About two weeks after I cut dairy out, I saw a huge change. She is three months now, I tried to have a little dairy recently and boy did I see a change in her. It was a few days before she was better. If you really want to continue breasteeding, work on what in your diet is irritating her. However, formula is not going to hurt her and she will grow great. My first daugther only got breastmilk for a few weeks. She thrived on formula and is a very smart 2 1/2 year old. I would also look into finding a new ped more in line with your beliefs.

You may have too much milk. This was part of my problem with DD. I had too much milk and she was getting too much foremilk. This caused her to gain like a champ but by the end of the day she was fussy and gassy. I took steps to regulate my supply. I do not alternate breasts. She starts and finishes on the same breast. In the first few weeks of regulating my supply, I would block nurse on one side for a few hours a day.

That is prob because she is alergic to lactose and not milk protein. When they have a reaction to dairy in breastmilk it is the milk protein that irritates them.

I am a little lost...but I am guessing you are nursing? I would keep nursing but offer nutramigen w/enflora lgg to supplement instead of goint 100% to allimentum. My reasoning is that nutrmigen powder contains a probiotic lactobacillius that helps heal babies gut that is inflammed and irritated due to the allergy. If you can get this under control you can continue nursing as long as you eliminate dairy and soy from diet.

Just an FYI this poster has a strong preference for Enfamil Products. They are constantly hawking Enfamil products or putting down other formula brands..

I BF my DS with a dairy and soy allergy. I also had an oversupply of BM so it was hard to diagnose what was causing the problems. Eventually when I insisted on testing his poop, there was blood. When my DS started getting diarrhea, it was very different than his normal BF poop. It was green, slimy, and full of mucous. It also smelled really horrible, which is unusual for BF babies.
Someone commented that the weight gain means no allergy, but my DS gained really well in the beginning so that is not always the case.
When I was changing my diet I replaced a few feedings a day with Elecare (hypoallergenic formula) to help heal his gut in the meantime. I pumped for these feedings so I didn't lose my supply. It was a big PIA, because DS hated the formula so it took him an hour to drink a few ounces. In the end, I wound up being able to stop the formula after a few weeks and continue EBF.
I would recommend my GI doctor, Dr. Weinstein, she's affiliated with Schneiders and will work with you to help you continue to BF. I saw another GI doctor first who was completely against even trying the diet.

Yup..I don't hide behind my preference for enfamil or good start. I am a huge enfamil brand supporter.
Although, Similac does not contain a hypoallergenic product with probiotics so I wouldn't have been able to recommend one anyway.

ahhh, but you can add probiotics to Similac's hypo formula (which i do )
