Day 7 of Diahrea, giving in....Formula question
So I posted last week about my 6 week pold daughter having diahrea and vomitting for a couple of days out of no where and my Ped. told me to eliminate all diary from my diet cause she most probably has a milk protein allergy.
I have been COMPLETELY off dairy for more than a week now and she still has diahrea (day 7 today) but no vomitting and her apetite is good. He told me to giver her that formula Aleentum a fee days ago... I bought it and its been sitting on the counter for 3 days... I dont want to give it to her... I keep saying "well if she still has diahrea tomorrow Ill give it to her"... well its been more than tomorrow. I feel bad that she has diahrea but she is wetting a lot of dioapers so I know she is not dehydrated.
I think im really going to give it to her today... im just so upset that I wont be breastfeeding her (at least for a couple of days). Her Dr. said to give it to her a couple of days... let her stool return to normal and than breastfeed her again to see if she goes back to loose stool. Its like a game to see if she really has this milk allergy.
ANYWAY.. wow, can you tell im upset... I am rambling. I have never prepared formula before... do I just use regular tap water? Can you guys let me know? Thank you.

DO IT, it will help. DS has the same thing for 2 weeks and he is slowly getting better day by day!
we are using RTF but the powder is 1 scoop for 2 oz of water. we use Brita, leave it out on the counter so its room temp 
dont expect an immediate change but she should slowly get better over the next 2 weeks if its a milk protein allergy
ETA - if you are really going to do this, you need to do it for a few weeks to see a real difference. It can take a few weeks for milk proteins to leave their system

It can take up to a full month for all dairy to leave your system - if you want to give the formula, that's fine, just know that you don't have to!!

Exactly what I was going to say.
It def. takes more than a week for it to leave your system. In the meantime I would keep pumping every few hours (whenever you would normally feed your DC) so you don't lose your supply.

Ditto-I also wanted to say that you might want to eliminate soy as well. DD has a milk allergy and I have to eliminate both.

Also, I think I posted this in your last post about this, get a reference for a pediatric Gastro that will do a very quick and simple stool test to see if there is a milk allergy or not. Then you know either way and don't have to go through all this back and forth. I'm sure you can alot of recs on here close to where you live.

What makes you think it's diarrhea? The only reaon I ask is because EBF baby poops are VERY loose... almost like water at times. And they go very often. My DDs went after every feeding when they were 6 weeks old. My DS did not go nealry as often, but apparently that's OK too. All newborns sound "congested" as well- are you seeing mucus in the nose or just hearing it? Their little nasal passages are TINY and it often sounds like they are little bulldogs with the way they breathe.
IIRC you mentioned that she nurses well? Does she always arch her back and scream during feedings? Does she projectile vomit after feedings? If not and she's just fussy, chances are she's just a fussy newborn. Most importanly, has your pediatrician tested her stools for blood? THAT is the best way to determine if there is a milk allergy.
My DS was colicky until he was about 8 weeks old. He was also VERY gassy. Colic peaks at 6 weeks, but then usually progressively gets better (usually). From 6pm until 10 at night my DS would SCREAM. Feeding him during that time was a nightmare- he'd fight it like crazy.
I'm sorry for asking so many questions- it just seems to me that you just have a typically fussy NB and a pediatrician who seems hellbent on sabotaging your BFing efforts. I would NEVER say that if you were OK with giving formula, but it seems that you really want to continue to nurse. If I were you, I'd keep nursing for another few weeks. Cut out the dairy if you want, but I really think that you'll start seeing improvement as she gets a little older.
Many hugs to you- I KNOW how hard the first 2 months are. Even with my third I often thought, "There HAS to be *something* wrong for him to cry like this." Truth was- he was just an extremely fussy little dude who would lose his mind from 6-10 every night. The rest of the day he was just "fussy".

great advice! get the stool test before you do anything!

BTW- giving formula WILL firm up her stools. But only because it's not BM. Breastmilk is so easily digested by a baby that there is literally nothing to come out other than water. EBF poop ranges from total brownish/yellowish liquid, to liquid with some *seeds* to liquid with what looks like bits of scrambled eggs (yes, I've seen it and can concur!). Formula poops don't range as much in color and usually have the consistency of paste.

Thank you for the support in your last post.. this all started last friday when she screamed for 6 hours straight and then the next day had "looser than normal" stool and projectile vomitted at every meal for 3 days. But now she is back to eating like a beast and no vomitting...
You made me really confised about her poop, LOL... before this episode last friday her poop was generally medium thickness and yellow SEEDY... now its more brownish and watery... I THINK its diahrea but now maybe im thinking its not?!? BUT IT SO LOOSE...ayyy!!
This Ped. is driving me insane, he said there is no stool test for this milk allergy thing. He said they test for blood as the sign of the milk allergy BUT not every baby with milk allergy will have blood in the stool-- so therefore in his book that test is not reliable. 
I WANT TO KNOW... I dont want to cut out dairy if I dont need to, you know?
Im gonna call me insurance today and ask them for a Ped. gastro in my neighborhood so we can get a definite answer.
So wait... this is my question to you now... if BF baby's poop can be that watery how do you know when they have diahrea??? help!

When my ds was that age he'd poop every 3 hours or so and it was always loose...he was also ebf, so it's definitely possible that the poopies are normal! I have no experience with the projectile vomiting, but have lots of experience with spit-up lol I know how you feel about the formula...I just started supplementing and also just stared at the can for a few days.
eta: I've been using bottled poland spring water to mix the formula

is she still producing urine? still wet diapers?

She has maybe 4-5 bowel movements a day... wetting diapers normally, lots of pee pee.
When this started last week the poop was so watery she had like 3 outfit changes a day cause she would leak.. it was explosive. It definitely calmed down. The amount is much less, i would even say normal.. but the consistency is what is throwing me off. She has never had poop this color or this watery.

Diarrhea is not harmful unless the baby is not nursing to replace the water loss. When there is diarrhea, there are almost always other sypmtoms such as fever or vomiting. BTW- vomiting and spitting up are 2 different things. I'm not sure HOW you discern true diarrhea from regular old NB poops because it all looks the same. My DS's poops are usually yellowish, and sometimes brown but my DD's were almost always a very dark gold color, almost brown.
Here's the deal, NBs spit up. Some do it ALOT. When it's usually projectile and the baby seems in pain, then there is usually a problem, whether it be GERD(gastro esophageal reflux disorder) or a milk allergy. If it's just alot of spitting up but the kid seems to be eating well, it's just regular old GER (gastro esophageal reflux) and the baby is just known as a "happy spitter". My second DD spit up ALL.THE.TIME. but gained weight like crazy and didn't seem to be in pain. Sometimes she projectiled, but usually it was just regular old spitting up.
My DS rarely spits, but has projectiled a few times.
If your LO is nursing well, doesn't seem to be in pain while nursing, and has plenty of wet/dirty diapers, I'll bet she's just fine. I would NOT give formula.
Have there been any repeats of the screaming episode from the other night? Is it a nightly thing, the screaming or was that a one time thing?

It's VERY possible that the change in your diet changed the color. Explosive diapers are pretty common in NBs. In the second to third month, they tend to start pooping less, but have more in quantity.
My DS only poops once a day now and it's ridiculous amounts. I wish he'd poop more often because it's gross how much he poops in that one "sitting". My DDs definitely had at least 5 a day at 6 weeks old.

No, that episode on Friday scared the cr@p outta me because she is usually cranky but NEVER like what she did last friday (6 hrs straight). She has not cried like that at all since then. She has not thrown up since then either, not even spit-up! Oh and this whole time (even last friday) no fever at all.
The Dr. even admitted that it might not be a milk allergy it might have just been a virus or something...

I used bottled water.
If she's a good feeder she may just pop right back on. AJ was a great BF but I had to stop when I got a CAT scan. I had to wait 5days. She came back on like a champ she was only a week or so old. Unfortunately 2days later I had to stop all together because of the meds I was on. AJ, at least, didnt care either way when she was hungry.

color and consistancy changes ALL the time. even with DS who is FF (ate the same exact thing every day, all day) his BMs changed all the time. Some seedy, some DARK green (usual), some brown, some golden colored and they went from paste to watery back and forth.
since 4-5 seems normal and you said things seem to be normalizing, I would keep doing what you are doing. I still say have them do the test for blood in her stool.
For us, it was clearly visible though - changed him and there is was.
from your description here, sounds either like a bug or just normal newborn business
i would still consult a Ped GI just in case, to set your mind at ease if nothing else!

Thank you ladies very much... I swear I think you guys have more patience to asnwer questions than my ped.
Can you give me the exact title of the specialty Dr.
Pediatric_____....? Just so when I call the insurance I know what Dr. to ask for. The good thing is I dont need a referal for my insurance, so I will take her even if my Ped. doesnt think the test is accurate.

i def would go to upper GI as well.... also an allergist... she may also be allergic to soy... usually diary and soy allergies go hand in hand...it did for my daughter( who out grew the soy but sill has the diary)

I agree to contact a pediatric gastro for your own peace of mind. But if she is back to her usual, albeit fussy, self, I truly do think it was an isolated incident of the nighttime crazies.
Newborns VERY easily get overstimulated. Even now my 10 week old is still a huge crankpot even after he's been napping all afternoon, just because it's the end of a "long" day. If we had any outings or visitors, he's even worse. Evening is a bad time for most little babies. The "stresses" of the day catch up to them and their only outlet is to cry.
You are doing a great job- and KUDOS for doing so well with BFing. Those first 2 months and especially first 6 weeks are truly the most difficult time. I've done this 3 times and each time has been just as difficult. I constantly questioned whether or not everything was "normal".
ETA: I took my second DD at 4 months old to a pediatric allergist to be "tested" for a milk allergy (my oldest had one that was diagnosed when she was 9 months old). The allergist explained that a + skin test in a 4 month old baby was unlikely unless she had a severe allergy. So, going to an allergist with a baby as young as yours might not get you any definitive answers, but at least maybe they can guide you.
