to me it depends on the item....

bottles, binkys, rattles - no.

Little small toys painted - no.

Sand toys, coloring books, flashcards = yes

I guess I'm the minority. I don't mind my kids playing with them BUT only because they're older. Almost 4 and 6.5 yrs old. I would not want them playing with them when they were little though. At their age now, it's GREAT filler gifts. You can always find something to put in an Easter basket, stocking, or a reward gift for only a dollar! Chat Icon

I am the same way and my DS is almost 4 years old.

I get many books and puzzles and the dollar store. Some of the things in those places are complete trash of course, but the problem is that so are many things in more expensive brand stores, they just cost much more, that's' all... All those constant recalls is a good case in point!

My mother is the queen of the dollar store toy, I always ask her to buy Noah one thing that costs $100 instead of 100 things that cost $1 each, however, I do let my kid (and have done when he was little ) play with them providing the toy was age appropriate and not a choking hazard, I appreciate the thought and I know my mother is excited when she buys these things. To be honest, I usually let him play with them until they fall apart, or if I have a toy cull, they are the first things to go.
