we are in the market for a home. i found one online that i love and want to look at. problem is its not a side street...its a busy road even though its not to busy. The house has a decent sized front yard and a HUGE backyard. I never wanted to live on a main road bc of having kids but something about this house i love....and since the backyard is so big would you consider it? there is a fence in the front and we are pretty far from the road. there is also sidewalks

Re: wwyd
it really would depend on a lot for me. this was one thing we didn't want either because we will have kids in the future.
But, I would consider it for these reasons if:
I've been on the market a really long time and really haven't found anything I love like this house or I have a very limited budget and could never get all the things this house offers without compromising on something
If you get it, I would suggest paving an area in the back where you kids can ride bikes and play, like they would in your front yard
Also- things to remember.. just because its not busy now, doesn't mean it won't be in the future or durning rush hour times when you kids might have to walk to a bust stop etc.
And lastly, I learned that houses sometimes show amazing online and look terrible in person, and sometimes the reverse. So go and see the house first and then really weight out your options. But IMO- it would really have to be above and beyond anything I saw or could get into, before I would personally buy it

Re: wwyd
I lived on a busy road my whole life...until I moved with my husband. Now I live on a very quiet street. To be honest, other than never being able to get out of my driveway, I didn't mind it.
It would really depend on the house, and how long you expect to live there. If it is for a long time and you love the house, then I would consider it.

Re: wwyd
I don't know how old your kids are, but I'm on a very quiet street and still freak out a little when they get out of the car and run down the dirveway (to get the mail)
I also run on the service road of a main road and I always think about the noise level.

Re: wwyd
I wouldn't buy a house on a busy road. I grew up on a very quiet cul de sac. I don't think I could handle the noise or business of it. I'd also worry about when we have kids and resale value. That said, only you know what is the right answer for you!

Re: wwyd
I would drive by the house and see how busy it is. I never wanted to live on a "busy street" but we saw our current house and it was perfect for us. The street can be a little busy at times and we live across from a church so on sundays it is a bit busy. But it is also very pretty to look at. it is more like being across from a park. honestly other people expressed their concerns and we drove by it and watched before making a decision and, it isnt that bad. We have a large yard, so our kids will be playing in the yard and the people who go to church are very nice. Our street is also NOT noisey at all, and we are a corner house so our other side is not on a busy street. We love our area, we feel very safe, we are close by everything we need, the SD is very good and we cant complain.
I have to add too that my husband will be starting a private practice in our home , so being on a bit of a main street we feel will be helpful to his buisness
I would suggest looking at it anyway. See HOW TRULY busy it is. See if it is noisy, think about the area, the school distrcit etc..

Re: wwyd
No, I wouldnt... That was actually high on the list of what i didnt want... altho we bought into a condo community, we still picked a unit that faced a courtyard not the parking lot... if you really dont want to pass up on the house, remember there will peob be a smaller pool of people for resale aspect

Re: wwyd
I think I would need to know what type of main street you mean.
Our first house was on a busy road. It was a cut thru rd. No sidewalks. I didnt like that but honestly I knew I wasnt going to raise my family there, it was always our starter house. We sold it before we had our family and it sold quickly.
Now, I live near the schools in our town. I live on a corner that gets very busy when kids are going to and leaving school. The rest of the time, my street (where my house faces) isnt bad at all and my corner street is thru street busy.
I dont mind it at all. We have 1/2 an acre of property and live in a sidewalk community. It didnt deter us from wanting our house.
Everyone is different in what they want/need in a house and obviously what they can afford.

Re: wwyd
'Busy road' is sort of relative. Things to consider are what's the speed limit? What type of traffic is permitted? When is it most busy? How loud is the traffic?
We actually bought a house almost exactly like you described and we love it. The house sits on a half acre of land but it's almost in the middle of the property so we have a large open front yard and a large fenced-in backyard. We let our nieces and nephews play out front, supervised of course, and they can play out back as well. There are also some well placed bushes in the front yard which act as noise blocker/privacy screen.
Go check it out. Stand outside and see what it's like. Also listen from inside if any of the traffic noise is audible.
Good luck!

Re: wwyd
I love our house! It was perfect my only concern when looking is our house is on a double yellow road, and at first this scared me but I watched the traffic at different times and its nothing, it get a little busier about a mile away but my section is great. (everyone turns off my road to get to the side streets they live on which are all before me) so we were lucky with that, and we even found a benefit to it this winter, because it is a double yellow, the roads were plowed very well, there was not a time when it would have been impossible to get out. There is also a state part a 2 minute walk down my road so kids will have a very large area to ride bikes in So sometimes you could luck out and it wont be bad. Good Luck!!!!!!!!

Re: wwyd
It really depends on how YOU feel about it. Me, personally, I would not consider it. Then again, I have bypass houses that are under REALLY low flying commercial jets, right behind train stations, or even trashing looking neighborhood. There's nothing wrong with living on a main street as long as your worries can be solved by alternative solutions. Ex - making sure your kids don't play on the driveway but in the backyard, which is fenced in. GOod luck!
