Horrible Tragedy in Seaworld today
One of the biggest Shamus killed a trainer... in front of an audience and kids I think this is one of the whales we saw last year when we went... so sad...
Shamu Attack
I heard that they are stopping the shamu show for the time being - if you are planning a trip soon....
(Edited to change killer whale to Shamu as pointed out by a poster - they actually are orcas but are known as killer whales because they were known to kill whales. I used Shamu because i think more people would know that than Orca...I don't want to disrespect the trainer's life work..)

Orcas are viscous killers in the wild... even though these animals are all bred and kept in captivity, they still have the instinct. You just never know with animals.
Regardless, what a horrible incident. My heart goes out to the trainer and her family as well as all the employees of sea world and the people who witnessed it.

Re: Horrible Tragedy in Seaworld today
It's so tragic on all accounts.
You just have to remember you are taking a WILD animal and putting it in captivity.
Not excusing it, but Is it fair to do that? (blame the animal)
It's such a catch-22

Re: Horrible Tragedy in Seaworld today
i might get flamed for this but.... this is why animals belong in their natural habitat. they arent for performance. i feel awful that the poor woman was killed. now its time to stop treating these whales like domesticated puppies. i personally think its cruel

ITA. I also don't understand why they would keep a whale in a show that has *already* killed two times before. Who's brilliant decision was that?!

This is the whale that splashes everyone at the end of the show. The trainers are not allowed into the pool with him. This trainer fell in the water and the animal acted. A very sad situation.

The article that I read said the trainer didn't fall in the water, that she was walking and the whale grabbed her and pulled her into the water.
Either way, very very sad

In fairness to the whale- it seems as though the other deaths he was involved in are kind of questionable. The first was at a poorly run aquarium and three other orcas were also part of it. And the second was some guy who snuck into the tank to go swimming. You can't really hold the whale responsible for that. The bottom line is, they keep these animals in captivity to research them, keep them safe, and yes, to use them for entertainment. Whenever you work with a wild animal, you know there are risks. And like a pp mentioned, noone was supposed to be in the tank with this whale. She either fell or was pulled in- it's still not 100% clear.

I agree. You can't blame the poor animal, he didn't choose this life, he got taken away from his life, KWIM?
with that said, it's an awful tragedy and you know he was well taken care & loved by his trainer. So sad.
