anyone else nervous about what to do when baby comes home?

we feel like we know nothing...

luckily we will have the help of our parents and we will be taking a newborn class at the hospital before the baby comes. After delivery, do people come in and talk to you about stuff or show you how to do things?

but where else are you learning about what to do? We feel so lost.

thanks Karin!

I know you are right, but i hate the unexpected. I havent really had too many babies in my family who live close by that I would be able to say I had that experience.

I was so confused yesterday registering, DH and I had no idea what bottles or nipples we needed

You know, after being in the smae house with my SIL and her last two pregnancies, I am okay with this...

I am actually terrified of the birthing process more!!!Chat Icon

You will be fine. There was a good two weeks when my nephew came home where my SIL had PPD and wouldn't handle the baby and I was in charge. Your natrually going to know what to do. It makes you tired as hek...but its so worth it in the end <3

Yes I was nervous! In the hospital I delivered at there was a huge checklist that they had of things to go over. While prepping me for my c/s they asked DH and I which items we'd like to cover and we said everything!! But most things are instinctual - you'll see!

Re: anyone else nervous about what to do when baby comes home?

This is going to be long, but I want to share my experience because I remember so vividly feeling the exact same way.

A few hours after getting home with DD#1, I walked my family to the door and said good-bye as they drove back to NY (I live in MD). DH and I looked at each other then looked at this teeny baby laying in the bouncy and said, "What do we do?!"

I called my best friend who had just had her second child 2 weeks earlier and the first thing she said when she answered (before even saying "Hello") was, "Can you BELIEVE they just send you home with them.....?"

Those first few days are rough because you are learning how to be a parent and your baby is learning about life on "the outside". My mom always said newborns are "tiny strangers" that take some time getting to know- and she was right. Whats nice is they won't remember the mistakes (we totally forgot to being a diaper bag to DD's first pediatrician's appointment), and chances of you actually hurting them are pretty slim.

It's exhausting, overwhelming, and at times frustrating. But mixed in there will be lots of moments of pride, of excitement, of joy, and most of all, lots of love. You will fall in love with the "little stranger", with the craziness that is your new life, you might even fall more in love with your husband (that was a pleasant surprise for me) when you realize what a good team you are.

Your feelings are TOTALLY normal.Chat Icon Everything of true importance will be explained to you in the hospital (times/amount to feed, counting dirty/wet diapers) and you won't forget that info. The rest is just stuff you'll figure out naturally.

AmyChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon thank you so much!

I have to remember that the baby wont know all the mistakes we make. I just have to relax a bit and realize that every first time mom feels this way. I guess at least there are people i can call crying to Chat Icon I just want to feel prepared a bit, but i guess that really isnt going to be totally possible

I appreciate you taking the time to write back... it is helping me settle down right nowChat Icon

I don't think anyone is EVER truly prepared. I'm having baby #3 and I'm still not going to feel prepared (although labor and delivery is old hat to me nowChat Icon ).

It's normal to be nervous. I have to say, as bad a rep the Parenting board has been getting lately, I truly credit that board with keeping me sane those first few weeks. The support and comfort was unbelieveable to me.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: anyone else nervous about what to do when baby comes home?

I had no idea what to do with DD, besides feed her on demand and change her diaper. I was clueless. But somehow we figured it out.

Re: anyone else nervous about what to do when baby comes home?

DS was my first time ever SEEING a newborn let alone care for one lol. I thought I would break his little arms when changing him, I looked at the nurse like she was nuts when she told me to swaddle him lol. But honestly you just learn these things along the way, and your mommy instincts will kick in ((so amazing that this actually happens lol)). I didn't know how to care for the umbilical cord, or that we sponge bathe the until that comes off. These more important things you will be told in the hospital, or from your ped.

It's seriously a whirlwind the first 3 months, and they go SOO quick. Everyday is exciting, and sure tiring lol, but before you know it you will be pro!
