Does $1600 a month sound right?

For Daycare? DH and I went yesterday to look at 4 daycare centers. The 4 we saw ranged from $1300-$1900. The one we liked was roughly $1600 and it opened at 6:45-6:00PM.

Is that pretty much what you girls are paying?

To clarify the daycares were in Nassau

I think that seems really high. The daycare in my work building charged $1100.00/month ($275.00/wk) and they are opened 7am-6pm.

I think it depends on where the daycare is.

Mine is in Nassau, we pay MAX $1200 a month for full time, and that includes early drop off and late pick up (the hours are 6:30am to 7pm).

ETA: DS is usually only there 3 days and we pay $275 a week those times.

i think it depends on the type of daycare.

it seemed like home based ones were a little cheaper.

for us...the lowest cost we saw was $1100 but that was w/o extended hours.

we found the avg to be around 1200-1400 (nassau). and then there were a few on the higher end around 1600ish.

ETA - this was for the full 5 days of infant care.

It can depend on a few things, hours, age of the child, etc. Newborns that stay all day, or possibly earlier or after hours, get charged the most. It has to do with the ratio of teachers to kids.

I am a daycare provider and I know a lot of people who own their own daycares, 1600 is a lot jmo. 400 a week is high, I think for an infant that max I've heard of 340.

Re: Does $1600 a month sound right?

That is pretty high. We pay $1109 for DD. The hours are 630-6. She goes to a center that I Chat Icon in suffolk.

ETA: When DS starts we will be paying $1250 for him....I guess due to inflation.

It depends. ON LI, yes , but in the city, I think that's pretty standard.

Two years ago we paid $250/wk for full time infant care in Suffolk.

Re: Does $1600 a month sound right?

like everyone said, it depends where it is located - closer to the city, it is the norm, but in the suburbs, it sounds a little high.

Mine charges $1200 per month, in Nassau. We looked at 4 other places in the area and they were all in the $1200 range for infants.

Re: Does $1600 a month sound right?

We pay $1400 in Nassau with extended hours. If we didn't do extended hours it would have been $1200.

Sounds VERY high.
I am going to see Tutor Time in Suffolk on Monday.
I'll update with what they cost but I know it's a lot less than $1600 per month

Re: Does $1600 a month sound right?

Like everyone else said, it depends on your area. I live in the DC area and $1600/month is average. The cheapest that I've seen is $1325 and it's gone all the way up to $1900.

In the city, $1600 is unfortunately the norm. I think in the outer boroughs it's less and I'd imagine the further east you are, it should/would be less.

I know good daycare is worth it, but man, WHY does it have to cost so much??? I'm really praying our plan for only 3 days of childcare works out!

Re: Does $1600 a month sound right?

I paid $1500/month last year for nassau county.
I thought it was worth it. They had very high standards.
But I soon decided to be a SAHM so I wasn't there that long.
I think the hours were 8-6

$1600 does seem high for Nassau but I guess it depends on where it is. When I looked in Port Washington before DD was born, $1300 was the norm. It's been over 3 years since then but I can't imagine skyrocketing daycare costs. What does this daycare offer that the other don't?

We paid $1800 a month for DD when we lived in the UES. That was for 8:30am to 5:30pm, before care and after care was an addn'l fee.

Where in Nassau? I have recently visited 6 day cares and the prices ranged from $1160 to $1400 for an infant. But I'm on the South Shore. I'm sure every area is different.

We will be paying about 1400 for full time infant care at the Tutor Time in NHP. They seem worth it though!
