NY state lawmakers reject gay marriage bill
(12/02/09) ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York lawmakers have rejected a bill to legalize gay marriage.
The Senate decision Wednesday comes after months of delays and arm twisting of lawmakers sympathetic to the bill but representing conservative districts. It follows a referendum in Maine earlier this month that struck down a gay marriage law before it took effect.
Advocates say they aren't surprised by the decision. Most, including Gov. David Paterson, say they at least wanted a floor debate and vote.
Gay marriage is legal in Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts and Vermont. A New Hampshire law takes effect Jan. 1.

It truly disgusts me how so many people can treat gays as 2nd class citizens who are not afforded the same rights as the rest of us. Its so easy to judge these people and say "they shouldn't get married" -- when as a heterosexual, you have the right to marry or not marry without any issues. Fine, you may not LIKE the idea, but to advocate to the point that lawmakers feel pressure to strike it down, makes no sense to me whatsoever. Why care about what someone else does with THEIR life with someone THEY love.
Its downright despicable.
Let them marry and give them the rights, that as a citizen of this country, they deserve.

It embarrasses and saddens me that we live in such ignorant times. Many people feel that gays should be legally entitled to the same rights, but that it shouldn't be called a marriage. And to those folks, I would ask them to remember the "Separate Yet Equal" scenario that segregated whites and blacks. It's still a form of discrimination. And to those that just flat out contest their right to live a life of love and legal entitlements, I am speechless. I hope that NY does the right thing in the end. It's rather pathetic that it has even become a topic for public debate.

ITA. We watched "Milk" the other night, and it saddened me to think that the gay rights movement really hasn't moved so far from that time. Yes, things are better in some respects, but some very basic rights available to other Americans are not to them, and I just do not understand how this is even legal under our Constitution.
And I do not for the life of me understand the arguement that gay marriage threatens the institution of marriage. Wouldn't people wanting to get married be a GOOD thing?

Can I ask why you're opposed to same sex marriage being recognized as a legal civil union? I can understand why some religious institutions would not perform same sex marriages but why shouldn't the state?
I'm not flaming and not looking to judge but would like to hear the opposing view point.

Not flaming. Hope this isnt read the wrong way and I get flamed..
Can I ask you this, and its just a question...do you have an issue with the word marriage being used for gay people, or just gays being able to be joined together legally in general?
I took a sexual ethics class in college and this was a topic of conversation in one class. Some people felt that marriage was between a man and a woman, but was ok with gays being joined in "union" (same idea as marriage but not call it marriage) I think the word "marriage" is what has people stuck.
I, for one was against it before taking this class, but after the class and getting to know quite a few happy gay couples, I think its a shame that they cannot have the same rights as I do with my DH. I mean I know some gay couples who have a more stable relationship than some of my straight friends who are married!

I am saddened that even in a time where we have our first black President there is so much hatred and discrimination. I am not surprised at the ruling because a good portion of NY outside of the NYC area is no where near progressive. I am so sick of hearing "Christians" defending their hatred and ignorance of gays by using the Bible. What makes me sickest is when minority groups who were once oppressed themselves, feel it is appropriate to do the same thing to gay people because they are different.

But don't worry... you will have TONS of posters asking you over and over WHY and WHY NOT alll day! Because if you don't feel like others, you MUST justify over and over why you don't.
