Where in that link does it say that the flu vaccine cannot cause it? Am I missing something? It says a vaccine can cause this, as well as a virus, infection, etc.

This sounds very similar to Guillan Barre syndrome, which can result from a flu shot or a viral infection itself.



In the causes section it says this:

Causes, Antecedent HistoryViral infections thought to induce ADEM include influenza virus, enterovirus, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella zoster, Epstein Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, hepatitis A, and coxsackievirus; while the bacterial infections include Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Borrelia burgdorferi, Leptospira, and beta-hemolytic Streptococci.[14] The only vaccine proven to induce ADEM is the Semple form of the rabies vaccine, but hepatitis B, pertussis, diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella, pneumococcus, varicella, influenza, Japanese encephalitis, and polio vaccines have all been implicated.[6][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24] In rare cases, ADEM seems to follow from organ transplantation.[18] The risk of ADEM from measles vaccination is about 1 to 2 per million,[17] which is far lower than the risk of developing ADEM from an actual measles infection, which is about 1 per 1000 for measles (and 1 per 5000 for rubella).[19][25] Measles infection also appears to lead to worse ADEM outcomes than cases associated with measles immunization. Some vaccines, later shown to have been contaminated with host animal CNS tissue, have ADEM incident rates as high as 1 in 600




Edited because the Flu vaccine is listed as a vaccine that has been implicated.

I think it said that the flu vacc has been implicated but is very rarely the cause and there was another vaccine that was cited as a more frequent culprit.

ETA- it said that the semple form of the rabies vaccine could cause it.

It appears that there are some vaccines that may cause this, but the flu one isn't listed.

This sounds exactly like what happened to me when i was an infant after I got vaccinated with the measle shot. I was running a fever and the dr. vaccinated me anyway.

Later that day or the next day i think (from what my mom said) i was convulsing, having seizures, high fevers. I was in intensive care for 2 weeks. They told my parents I would be lucky if i was brain dead the rest of my life.

Here i am today 30 years old.

I'm not sure if this is the same family (which I assume it is)...The mother of the little boy is my childhood neighbor and we've known the family for over 30 years.

He passed away this morning after being taken off of life support. He has a younger brother too.

I can't even imagine what they are going through, and my heart breaks everytime I even think about it.

From what I have been told, the flu shot had nothing to do with him contracting ADEM, it was just a freak coincidence. Chat Icon

I don't understand how it can fully be determined that the flu shot had nothing to do with the ADEM. Not looking to debate at all, though, so please don't take it that way.

We just found out today that the child's father is an old HS friend of my husband's. They are not super close friends but they are in the same crowd and they run into each other from time to time. My husband is very upset and so are his other friends. What we heard was that it's not totally confirmed to have been related to the flu shot but it is suspected. Either way, this is a horrible loss. My husband is probably going to the wake to pay his respects.
