i wouldn't use theirs. it's just not my style. BUT, i would simply tell them, you are re-doing the entire room in a style that he is going to grow into, not out-of... and the bed you gave us is too "young".
i am sure that they will be fine...

i wouldnt use it. i would stick with the theme you had planned. it is your child and your choice to do what you want with that room.
It was thoughtful of them to give you that gift, however, personally it bothers me when people purchase somethinglike that for someone, because they like it and do not think of what the other person may want. I would not use the bed for a while and then use the one you purchased. Ive done this in the past with things and all i do is curse how much i hate it but cant do anything about it because it was given as a gift, but wasnt what I wanted. Or I think what is an appropriate time line to keep it before i can change it or buy something else. dont do that to yourself!!!
I think you should just call them up and explain that you appreciate the gift and you didnt want to hurt their feelings, but you had already purchased a bed for your child and really cant use the one they gave you.

very kind of them but since you already purchased the bed and it cannot be returned, i would politely decline their offer. explain to them that you are appreciative of their generosity but you already purchased a bed on CL.
eta: just reread and am confused. is the CL bed that you posted the bed that you purchased (not a race car) or the bed that your friend gave you? did they post on CL and it didn't sell?

Sorry - the bed we bought is from CL - They got the teddy bear bed at a store. I couldn't find a picture online. I think I'm going to return it - I just hate having to explain it - I'm such a chicken!!!!

I should have said something in the moment, but I just didn't and then the moment was gone.... We just dormered our upstairs so the twin bed is up there, but not assembled yet. I just have to pluck up the courage and say something.....
