Those who swaddled and then stopped - Please Please Please help!!

DS is 4 months old and we had been swaddling him; we attempted to stop about a month ago, but he would not sleep, so we went back to it. At his check-up yesterday, we were told we should stop since it could interfere with development (I think that is what she said). Anyway, we attempted last night to put him down in a Halo sleep sac and he was up every 1-2 hours!! He took a bottle one of the wake-ups, but I know that he was not hungry the other times. It was a nightmare, especially since he had been sleeping through the night. He did start a once a night wake-up about two weeks ago, but he was not doing it every night. I do not know what to do, I think I got a total of an hour's sleep. Any suggestions on how to make this transition or an idea of whether he will ever get used to not being swaddled. I know it is my fault for swaddling him for so long, but I can't bear the thought of each night being like last night, especially when I have to work the next day!!

I wish I could help you, but I'm in the same boat as you...

Now I'm really worried...what do they mean affect the development????

Ugh...more sleepless nights ahead I guess.......

Hey there!

We stopped swaddling and had an issue too.
At first, I put a wedge pillow behind her in the crib to make her feel as if she was still enclosed... and once she was asleep I carefully removed it....

Now she has a "blankie" that she falls asleep with and I do the same thing with it.

She snuggles it - actually she stuffs her face into it to fall asleep - and then I remove it from her crib after she is asleep b/c I am paranoid!!

It'll get better (until he starts teething Chat Icon )

I don't want to freak anyone out - I think she meant something about it being physically restraining - I just am a paranoid new mom, so when she was against us swaddling, I immediately decided to stop it.

I can't remember us doing anything special to wean her off of swaddling. They didn't swaddle her for naps at daycare and I guess that made the transition for us at bedtime easier. Since we stopped swaddling which was around 4 mths, we have been using a sleep sack. DD is now 7 1/2 months.

He is not swaddled during the day, so I can't understand why it was so rough last night. I hope it gets better Chat Icon

Did you try the halo sleep sack that helped with my DS. Also I used a burp cloth and it became his security blanket.

Re: Those who swaddled and then stopped - Please Please Please help!!

This really worked for me for both DD and DS... I made it a slow process. The first night I swaddled them both with one arm out to get them used to having one limb out... then the next night i did both arms out and swaddled the legs only, and I kept it like that for 3 or 4 days. Then when they got used to that I took it off completely and put on the sleep sack and neither one of them woke up the first night without it.

It's worth a try, especially since it worked for both of my DC.

Re: Those who swaddled and then stopped - Please Please Please help!!

My ped said that the issue with swaddling is more about hip development, at least until they are rolling. What we did was similiar to MRSV1015. We never swaddled her legs though. We used a swaddle me or the halo sleepsack with the attached swaddle blanket. We left one arm out for two nights and then moved on to both. It took about a week or so for her to adjust but she was fine after that. We just use the sleep sacks now.

Well We swaddled till 5 and a half months. I dont think you need to stop...but if you choose to...The first night for us was just like you described , and then he woke about 2x's the second night and then BOOM was fine.

And he LOVED to be swaddled.

Thanks - I had thought about doing that, one arm and see how it goes. I think I am going to try it tonight and see how it goes.

I thought the same, I do not need to stop, but my fear is that it will only get worse to make the transition as he gets older. So I'd rather deal with the annoying hassle now. So you just did it cold turkey, no "one arm out" first?

I have never heard that swaddling too long can lead to developmental problems? Chat Icon

I swalled DS#1 until he kicked himself out of the swaddle every night (probably around 4 months) and I still did it, but never did it more than once a night (right before he went to bed).

DS#2 hated being swaddled, so he never was.

I swaddled DD until she was 9 MONTHS old. She would ONLY sleep if she was wrapped tight like a burrito in her "swaddle me". She never once kicked her way out, and slept straight through the night (12 solid house every night) starting at 5 weeks. I an convinced it was because she was swaddled. The only reason I stopped was because she got too big for the swaddle me.

This is what we did. I swaddled DD until about 5 months. We never had any development issues.

DS wanted arm movement at 4 weeks, so we began 'swaddling him' below his armpits... eventually, he would losen-up the blanket and kick it off... which is when we switched to the sleepsack.

maybe stop using a swaddleme (with velcro) and to go a regular blanket that will losen up overnight? then make the swaddle looser over time?

Re: Those who swaddled and then stopped - Please Please Please help!!

We stopped swaddling my son around 4 months i think. Can't remember. It was horrible. We tried the whole one arm out and it only made him mad. So we quit cold turkey, but have used a sleep sack ever since.

He woke every 2 hours the first night. I'm not going to lie... it didn't get better until he was 5 months and had more control over his arms. Until then it was pretty much horrible and he was getting up 3-5 times a night.

If i were you, if you don't have to stop... then i wouldn't. He'll let you know when he's ready to stop. Chat Icon

When you stopped, was it a nightmare that first night?

I had thought of that, but am afraid of the loose blanket suffocating him.

We moved from the Swaddle Me to a blanket and Abby is loosening it on her own. She will be 4 months next week and since I am off from work and can catch up on my sleep during the day, we plan to start the weaning off swaddling into sleep sacks then. She now naps in sleep sacks during the day at home though she never sleeps more than an hour in it. It is going to be a rough week.

If last night is any indication of the weeks to come, I am going to be one sleep deprived mama!! We decided to try the one-arm out thing tonight and see how it goes. Part of thinks we should continue w/ the sleep sack since we already started it, but not sure I can handle two straight nights of getting woken up every hour, I'm really drained today!!
