If someone sneezes, I say Labruit, which means good health in hebrew. I get some quizzical looks, but eh Chat Icon

It wouldn’t offend me, but I always get a bit uncomfortable when people say God Bless…

Me too.

I never know what to say back.

"And also with you"?

"Praise Jesus"?

"Amen"?

"Nanu Nanu"?

So I usually just sputter a thanks.

I usually answer with nanu nanuChat Icon
But I agree with some of the other pp, I don't get offended but it does weird me out and I really don't like when people say it to my kids.

But I know they mean it in a nice way.

Re: Spinoff: What do you say to a baby?

I don't have a baby, and I've never see "God bless you or God bless the baby" to a baby, but I think its wonderful. Honestly, I would want that child blessed in every religion/culture/way that it could be.

I take blessings no matter what religion -if someone who is muslim blessed my DS, I would love it. If someone who is jewish blessed my DS, I would love it. The more blessings the better!

I usually say "May the devil take your soul" that always goes over big... Chat Icon

Just kidding of course... The term God Bless You" came form the belief that your soul came out of your mouth when you sneezed and the "God Bless You" put your soul back in before the bad spirits could steal it.

Re: Spinoff: What do you say to a baby?

I usually say, "He/She is adorable," and sometimes follow with, "How old is he/she?"

If I had a baby and someone said "G-d bless," I would not be offended. I might be caught off guard at first, but I would just say "thank you," and smile.

Re: Spinoff: What do you say to a baby?

if someone was offended by that, I'd offer a second, silent prayer for the child.

anyone that effing ridiculous would suck to have as a parent IMO.

Re: Spinoff: What do you say to a baby?

I don't think it's offensive at all!

I usually say "What a beautiful baby!" because half the time I am not 100% certain if the baby is a boy or girl.

Same here. I would feel a little uncomfortable, maybe, but not offended.

Chat Icon

I should clarify that I mean REAL "offended" not how it is (over)used around these parts. Chat Icon

I understand maybe being a little uncomfy maybe with the use of the word "God"

but to get offended by a BLESSING?! it boggles the mind.

Re: Spinoff: What do you say to a baby?

My cousin is Buddhist and if anyone sneezes around him, he says "Buddha bless you". The first time he said it, I was taken back because it was unexpected. But I thought about it and took it as a blessing from his point of view. I am not Buddhist but the intention of the blessing was the same.

You know that's funny. I was watching an episode of All in the Family on TVLand once and they were talking about saying God Bless You.
And Edith (aka dingbat Chat Icon ) said- well what if a Buddhist sneezes- do they say Buddha bless you? It was meant to be a joke- but I guess it's really true! Chat Icon

This is a bit off topic BUT my dad is the least superstitious man on the planet. I don't know how he got that way bc we learned most of our ways from his mother but anyway.

He refuses to say God Bless you to people. I have never heard him say that or Salute or ANYTHING when someone sneezes because he says its just a bodily function and there is no reason to say something just like you wouldn't if someone coughed!

Once when I was younger my sister sneezed in Church and I said "God Bless you" and my dad smacked me upside my head IN CHURCH because he said that I shouldn't bring my susperstitions into a holy place!

I have never met anyone else who thinks like him!

Re: Spinoff: What do you say to a baby?

Even if the person was not my religion, I would not be offended. I think it's a compliment and "nice gesture" to ask your God to bless a child. If that's meant that way. Otherwise, if it's "just" an expression I don't see the purpose.

This made me laugh, the Brits often say things like "bless your cotton socks" or "aw bless" thats a lovely sentiment also.

Bless. just plain old bless.

Re: Spinoff: What do you say to a baby?

I would probably just say "s/he is is beautiful/adorable/whatever", but if someone said "God bless" to/about my child or me, I certainly wouldn't be offended or taken aback.
