I'm curious if airlines that offer peanut free flights (I believed another poster said some offer this) use the same plane every time. Is it truly a peanut-free plane?

No. A peanut free flight means that there will be no peanuts served. I know that we can ASK people to not open/eat peanut products, but we can't FORCE a paying customer to comply.

I know at SWA, our res people try to educate peole who want peanut free flights about best times to fly (first flight of the day), as well as precautions to take (double check with flight attendants as they baord).

Truthfully, there are MANY different levels of peanut allergies- most are only if the child ingests peanuts. Considering in 8 years of flying, I NEVER had an emergency situation arise from the peanut dust on those planes, I can bet that some parents are just being EXTRA cautious by requesting no peanuts whatsoever in the cabin.

I do not think it is THAT much of an inconvenience to not eat peanuts for a few hours.

Of course I wouldn't eat peanut products if they asked us not to, because a child or adult could get sick from it. I really don't think a few hours without peanut butter is to much to ask.

However, I had NO idea that you could die from just smelling peanuts, so I think they should let the flyers know this, because you know theres going to be some person who just thinks the kid can't eat the peanuts, but doesn't realize the severity of the matter.

I will not eat or open or bring anytype of peanut to a flight because of that reason... A child/adult can't stop being allergic to peanuts but a person can control their craving for it for a couple of hours. JMO

I've had children in my classroom who have had severe peanut allergies- not just if injested but airborne as well- and I've had to accomodate all snacks brought in for parties, etc..

I would have no problem complying with that on a plane for a child.

Re: Friday Night Debate Topic...

It's a MINOR inconvenience to not eat peanuts on an airplane. I think it's completely fair and fine. And if you're packing a snack for your kids on the plane, never use peanuts. This announcement is pretty common, so I'd just avoid that scenario whenever possibly for the safety of everyone.

ETA: For people who say the child should just not fly, I think not flying is a MAJOR inconvenience, and ridiculous in comparison so the MINOR inconvenience of not eating peanuts for a few hours. I mean how many people on the flight would have been expecting to eat peanut products anyway?

I can see how it would be annoying <a little> if you packed PB&J sandwhiches thinking that you could snack on them on the place, but found out last minute that you couldn't. But, I would consider it silly, and borderline ridiculous, if a grown adult carried on and on about having to go 3 hours without their peanuts. My first reaction to that announcement probably would've been "ehhh that's kind of annoying" and my next reaction would have been "oh well, get over it".

BUT... i could see feling differently if i had a kid and that kid was the pickiest eater and would ONLY eat peanut butter (or some form of peanuts). Yeah, thats a stretch, but in a situation like that, i might feel differently.

I think the biggets problem here, though, is that there's got to be a better way- and they (whoever 'they' are) need to do research and find a better way to eliminate this problem. I dont think people are "suffering" b/c of a 3 hour peanut withdrawl, but i also dont think that parents of a kid w/ allergies should bank on everyone adhearing to that request. I'm not saying that they shouldn't fly with their kids, so i hope i don't get interpreted that way- i just couldn't imagine TRUSTING 150 people to do the right thing- i probably wouldnt even trust the person to my right or left, even.

you are right, and I trust no one, but you do the best you can to make the environment as safe as possible.

when we were in the bahamas, DS was sitting at the dock waiting for our excursion and the lady next to him was eating peanuts and throwing the shells on the ground. The kids thought it was fun to step on them and crack them. Chat Icon Chat Icon I tell ya, there is danger everywhere when you have a nut allergy, if you dont you dont realize it. I do the best I can to keep him safe, and pray the epi-pen works in case I cant provide that safety 100%

ETA: I moved him as soon as I saw her but those shells were being kicked all around

Re: Friday Night Debate Topic...

If it was my child .. heck yeah i would want that announced and hope people would be kind enough to be considerate to my child.. therefore i would do the same for others. Not eating Peanut butter for even 24 hours isnt going to kill you.. but eating it could kill that child.. good enough reason for me not eat it.

Yes I think the flight should be asked to refrain from having peanuts on the flight. I think it's a small sacrifice for anyone with a possible deadly allergy.

If they choose not to, they should not be surprised or upset when their flight is delayed or needs to make an emergency stop for a medical emergency.

I have to echo the question, how is this even a legitimate debate? (not directed at the OP, who clearly didn't set it up the way it went.) & how are there parents who get a notification like that re: school lunch and send their kids in with prohibited food? It really just boils down to decency....
