Re: poll- cord blood banking
If we can easily save the money than yes. So right now I would say yes, I am confident we will be able to afford it.
ETA: I have read that it can also help parents or siblings in some cases which is another added benefit.

Honestly, we are not going to have the money! So probably not! It would be nice to, but I know that it is sooooo expensive!

Re: poll- cord blood banking
I'm sacrificing the private room to afford it, so yes, we are going to bank the cord blood. I also got $150 coupon from Motherhood that I'll use to save some cash. In my case I think it's worth it since there's so many possibilities for the future with the what they may be able to do with it.

Yes, we're not doing a fancy babymoon (we did a FL weekend earlier in my pregnancy). I'm doing Viacord and with the coupon it's $320/mo for 6 months - to me, it's worth it.

I don't know how or why, I just remember that it worked for them

Re: poll- cord blood banking
no, from what i've read the benefits don't outweigh the costs
cord blood is available free through the red cross. our families don't have any major illnesses that i'd need to worry about. and the way i see it, if insurance and the medical community thought it was necessary, it would be part of our benefits and offered free.

Do you really have that much faith in insurance companies? Cord blood banking is done before an illness and before you know whether it will become necessary. It may never be covered. The idea is currently in its infancy, and that is another reason why it is not covered.

Re: poll- cord blood banking
We are totally undecided, but need to decide asap as I am 35 weeks! We are so lucky, my parents offered to pay the initial fee. So, we ordered the kit and have it here in the house. Now we just have to decide if we are going to use it or not!
Any pros/cons anyone knows of to share to maybe make the decision easier?

well that is uncalled for. i HAVE done my research, thanks, and IN MY OPINION, the benefits DO NOT outweigh the costs. 2K won't necessarily cure my child and i DO NOT feel it is necessary. i feel it's a money maker. that is the point of this thread--to hear people's opinions on cord blood banking. we don't need people judging other people's decisions NOR saying they're not informed because they don't agree with you.
and yes, i truly do not believe that cord blood banking is necessary and if it was, the insurance companies would offer it especially to people with family histories. and that is my opinion that you don't have to agree with

If you read about the benefits and all of the children it has saved how could you still say you dont find it necessary? yes its your opinion but dont throw out how you did your research when there are girls on here new to it and really do need the FACTS not opinions. I stated my opinion as well- it wasnt a judgement- dont be so sensitive- I was simply giving my opionion based on facts and posted it as well.
and dont for 1 second believe that just b/c there is an illness in your family insurance will cover it AND insurance isnt the factor here- how is insurance going to help you get stem cells to cure you or your DC???????? they will NOT cover stem cell research. All I am saying is dont say its a money maker when it has saved MANY lives already where insurance has not-
insurance and cord blood banking are two different ball games.
edited to say- I did hear that hilary clintons campaign for health insurance is that she is tired of hearing the insurance wont cover it- that how many times does she have to hear that many children are not receiving health care b/c they dont cover specific illness and or needs of children?

My insurance covered an eye exam but would not pay for my glasses. Does that mean they aren't necessary?
Yes, cord blood banking is a money maker. That does not mean it is not necessary either.

Re: poll- cord blood banking
see I'm also torn because when I first looked into it I really thought it was a wonderful beneficial thing...I asked all the companies for more info on order to make a decision on which one I like better..... THEN Found out the pricing and I know we cannot in any way afford the money right now at all especially with me out of work. And then came the mail and the phone calls, we get a brochure in the mail on an almost daily basis and they call us every single day multiple times a day so that bothers me. I told them that we cannot afford them at this time and they still call so that to me is a sales tactic and makes me feel like they are just looking to get another customer.
I asked my OB about it and he said its a great thing to do if you can afford it but its not entirely necessary and if its not affordable then don't worry about it. In all honestly now that we know about it we may try to save for maybe our next child but is just not a possiblitly right now.

i can EASILY say i did my research and DON'T find it necessary. why is it so hard to see that not all people find all things necessary? and i truly don't appreciate you telling me or anyone else what to believe "for 1 second" because we are 2 different people with 2 different points of view and at no time am i telling anyone who is doing banking that they are wasting their money. this thread is about opinions on cord blood banking, and in MY opinion, it is not necessary. and i can be as sensitive as i want, thanks for your concern. anyone who chooses to do it is doing what they feel is necessary and right for their families, and i support them.
each family needs to decide for itself what they deem necessary. my family has easily decided not to. best of luck to you and your family.

Re: poll- cord blood banking
We decided not to (not pg at the moment; just popping over for old time's sake )
Every family is different and it's important to do research. That said, I would not go by research on any site that sells the service- of course they are going to focus on the info that supports their business! Right now, most of those companies are doing very well, but my doctor pointed out that it's important to ask what happens to your child's cord blood should the company go under.
I find the AAP to be a reliable and unbiased source of info. There is info on their position here. LINK
