Re: poll- cord blood banking

see I'm also torn because when I first looked into it I really thought it was a wonderful beneficial thing...I asked all the companies for more info on order to make a decision on which one I like better..... THEN Found out the pricing and I know we cannot in any way afford the money right now at all especially with me out of work. And then came the mail and the phone calls, we get a brochure in the mail on an almost daily basis and they call us every single day multiple times a day so that bothers me. I told them that we cannot afford them at this time and they still call so that to me is a sales tactic and makes me feel like they are just looking to get another customer.
I asked my OB about it and he said its a great thing to do if you can afford it but its not entirely necessary and if its not affordable then don't worry about it. In all honestly now that we know about it we may try to save for maybe our next child but is just not a possiblitly right now.
I also had an issue with the sales calls and the mailings. I discussed that in some of my posts when I was pregnant. We still went ahead with cordblood banking, though. As I said, it is definitely a for-profit industry but it was the right choice for my family.

Re: poll- cord blood banking
We decided to do it. I just felt that if god forbid something did happen to my child that the cord blood could help with...and I didn't do it...I would never forgive myself.
I am also the type of person that wastes money on 'stupid' things...so I felt as though this was money better spent than on a dvd, or a trip to atlantic city, or something like that.
With all that being said...make sure to ask a lot of questions. Also make sure that you know EXACTLY how it benefits the child. I was under the impression that this was a "cure" for things such as leukemia, etc. Upon further investigation, I discovered the child will still have to go through chemo, etc. They can just give a stronger dose of chemo because they can resupply the body with "good" cells.
However, I still did it. My OB explained it that it's an insurance policy. Most of the time you don't use the policy...but god forbid you have to, it will be the most valuable money you ever spent!

Re: poll- cord blood banking
We decided not to at this point, but maybe in the future. One reason we chose not to is because of cost, but also because I read (I forget where though) that your chances of matching wiht someone in the public bank are pretty high and just because you bank your child's does not mean it is a guarantee that it will be a match for another child. I also believe the companies are certainly selling something and play on the emotions of new parents. Definitely, read info from independent sources and NOT the information from the companies because they are not going to tell you the reasons not to do it.

Re: poll- cord blood banking
When I was PG with Ella, I looked into donating the cord blood. That would make it available for use by other children, and if we ever needed it, we could use it (if it was still available) and/or use another matching donation. There's no cost to donate, other than any fees charged by your OB for collection.
I plan to donate #2's cord blood (I wasn't able to donate Ella's because of a vaccine issue)

We are planning to, going to use some tax return money, and looks like we're going with Viacord because the company also does research.

Re: poll- cord blood banking
We did not think it was necessary after doing research and talking to my doctor.
I am not sure on the facts but it's sad how much money they are charging for it....we did NOT have the money to do it and I didn't think it was unfair or a horrible thing to not do it.
I hope someday if they do believe it is necessary then it will be covered by insurance for all people....if it is so so important and crucial, then it should be free, that is how I view it.
Also...interesting that more people than not feel its unnecessary as well or not necessary enough to warrant $2000. I'm definitely not alone!

Re: poll- cord blood banking
I recently had this discussion with my pregnant sister-in-law. Here first child has leukemia....thankfully he is in remission and nearing the end of his 3 years of treatment. She did her research and had discussions with both her pediatrician and my nephew's cancer doctor. Both doctors advised her that it wasn't necessary to do.
So, after speaking to her we decided not to do it as well. Money wasn't a factor in either of our decisions.

Re: poll- cord blood banking
At this point, we've done the research and decided against it.
We just don't feel there is enough research to back up doing this. We also weighed our family histories and found that this was a nonissue for us.
Money was not an issue for us.

Re: poll- cord blood banking
We did not do it. I did some research and felt that it wasnt worth it. I went back and forth and in the end decided it wasn't necessary for us.
First , we have no family history of anything. Second, it is not a sure thing, if you bank the cord blood there is still a good chance that using that wont work to cure the issues your child or you develop. Third, there are public banks and for our ethnicity there is a pretty good match rate.
I think its rude and unfair of some of the posters to jump on any woman who chooses not do it with some of the comments which have been made on this thread.
Everyone needs to learn to show others some respect in their decisions and opinions, whether you agree or not!
Good Luck on making your decision.
