Re: What movie has ever had a profound effect on you

Silence of the Lambs I guess, since I got a degree in Forensic Psych b/c of watching that movie.

I love Schindler's List and Life Is Beautiful, but more than those movies, GOING to Hiroshima and the concentration camp at Dachau had the real effect...made the horrors of the holocaust real to me.

I may not be understanding the question. there are movies that move me, but my life hasn't changed in any way because of them. to me, it's still a movie. someone's interpretation and vision. I try not to let that become my own...

Believe it or not, American Beauty...the emotion of it all really got to me...the lying, cheating, the dad at the end....all of it. The scene where they watch the leaves blowing in circles...I dunno....stuck with me.

An Inconvenient Truth
Forrest Gump
Seven
American History X
Glory (saw it on a HS field trip)
The Color Purple
E.T.
Steel Magnolias
Shawshank Redemption

There's also a movie with Sally Field and Keifer Sutherland that still disturbs me. I don't recall the name. But Keifer was way too convincing in the role.

An Inconvenient Truth, I related to this, too. It helped me change my habits about energy.

And Sicko, despite its flaws, did help me realize that health insurance companies will decline coverage for important treatment based only on a %. That's scary and helped me decide who I might elect next.

Terms of Endearment - the hospital scene was moving.

Working Girl - This is cheesy, but when I was just starting out in the business world, it was nice seeing a young woman succeed.

American History X

Scared the crap out of me and the stuff that happened in that movie still happens.

Same here, same reason.

I'd also add Boys Don't Cry for the reason above.

As for changed my core thinking, I would say

Sicko - very disheartening to see the effect lobbyists, pharaceutical companies, etc. Our government supports those industries to the detriment & death of its very citizens.Chat Icon

I would say Pay It Forward but I already had that idea from one of Robert Fulghum's essays on making a difference.

I am too scared to watch "What Dreams May Come" because the book moved me to tears.

The Story of Us
Life is Beautiful
Moulin Rouge

And this is going to be the most ridiculous one on this whole thread, but truly seriously Talladega Nights I thought was brilliant and helped me heal my relationship with my mom.

If you liked the movie you should read the book...A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. It is fantastic.
