What can you tell me about Levittown?

DH and I have started casually looking for a home. We hope to buy by the end of the year.

I've noticed quite a few houses in our price range in Levittown. What can you tell me about the town? Where are the good neighborhoods? What LIRR station is closest? Does it have a central business district or "downtown" area? How's traffic?

It looks like the schools are pretty high-ranked. Is that correct?

Thanks for your help!

The taxes are crazy, and some of the areas are very run down.

They told everyone that they needed to raise the taxes to update the schools but once the schools were updated they never dropped the taxesChat Icon

I agree with this. I have to say the school district is good and if DH and i were to stay on LI we would want either west islip or Levittown school district. The only thing i am particularly a fan of the normal levit homes. But alot of the homes have been redone or expanded. Taxes are high and there are rundown areas. But i do like the school district.

remember that some of them don't have basements so you have to worry about other issues. fm what issue. friends ran into this problem and luckily backed out of the house. the inspector did not see the problem.

Why wouldn't they have basements? Is the water table high?

If you are considering Levittown, from what I understand the area zoned for McCarthur High School is more desirable. When DH and I were house hunting, we looked at many Levit houses. The lack of basements means that washer, dryer, hot water heater, and burner are somewhere in living space of the house (sometimes the garage). The houses are built on cement slabs because they are easier, quicker, and cheaper to build (nothing to do with water table).

Re: What can you tell me about Levittown?

I bought in Levittown last year. I guess I live in the "undesirable" part of town b/c we are zoned for Division ( I forget where we are zoned for elementary school). I love my neighborhood and I love my house. I have a Levitt cape. I personallyl am not a fan of ranches, but we saw some beautiful ones. I think that my entire neighborhood keeps their houses neat and clean. We looked around for a long time and then finally zoomed in on Levittown. Honestly, it was what we could afford. I think the downtown area is off Hempstead Turnpike b/t Tricounty flea market and the Target. traffic is not so bad and we go to the Hicksville trainstation if we have to go to LIRR (we are off 106). Compared to some homes in Nassau that we looked at I don't think the taxes are that crazy. Ours are 7000 with star. You definately have to look around. We will eventually have to update the house but for what we paid, it was wonderful. Fm me if u want any more info :)

Ah, thank you! I'm from MN so when I hear no basement, I instantly think about the water table. Many lakehomes/cabins in MN don't have basements because they would be wet all the time.

But yea, I'd definitely want a basement. Thanks for the tip. I'll keep it mind when we start seriously looking.

do you mean termites? most levit style homes on slabs no matter what town- levit homes were built all over the island have or had termite issues but its an easy fix. the termites usually come into the house if the boiler is still in the kitchen but again if traps are placed youre ok.

Re: What can you tell me about Levittown?

I live in Levittown and DH grew up here. We are in the Island Trees School District as opposed to the Levittown School District. Taxes are lower in Island Trees because most of the businesses on Hempstead Turnpike are zoned for Island Trees.

There are homes in Levittown with basements, over in the Miller Place area.

Not all Levitt houses are the same anymore, because most people have expanded them up and out.

I have an extended cape with a full dining room. I wouldn't want a original cape as they are somewhat small. The ranches are bigger than the capes.

I take the train from Wantagh, because Levittown is in the Town of Hempstead, so you can get a parking pass for there.

I am very happy with my decision to live here. I live on a quiet block with neighbors who have all invested a lot into their houses and keep them in great shape. The schools are good (DH is a grad).

You will find many Levittown trashers on here, but none of them actually live here. The people who live here know that it is the best kept secret on Long Island. An afforable middle class community with many young families and good schools.

Feel free to FM me if you have any questions.

I agree.

My husband is a teacher in Levittown elementary - I can find out any additional information you need.

I have sold many homes in Levittown and all of my buyers have been extremely happy with their decision to live there.

If you drive around the area - you will see that on every block there are plenty of homes that have dormered. IMO - the reason they dormer is bc they love the neighborhood. That says something about it.

Also - I live in Seaford - with Levittown schools. There are a few different towns that are Levittown School District.

I live in levittown since I was three and we bought in Levittown. I was a product of MacArthur High. I find everything to be convinent both shopping and parkways. The only thing I wish for is for a basement. Some have torned the old house down and made basements and I have friends who live behind the post office which all have basements.
Good luck

What are some of the "run down" areas? I always thought Levittown was one of the most homogenous places around- I grew up there and had friends and family from Salk/Mac and Wisdom/Division, so I am pretty familiar with much of the town.

I think it actually is nicer than when I was growing up- people are more into landscaping and adding details to make their homes look more unique.

DH and I are thinking of moving there once our current house sells- I want to be in Salk/Mac schools because that's where I went.

Re: What can you tell me about Levittown?

Danielle and I bought here in levittown in the summer of 05 when the prices of houses were at their peak. We were lucky enough to find an estate sale way under $400k. We bought it and renovated the inside to our liking. I have to say that I love the house. It is very homey inside and outside also. We have a huge backyard, excellent neighbors, a quiet street with all very nice taken cars of homes, excellent schools (salk/MacArthur) , and tons of shopping.

Yes we do not have a basement, but we made up for that with a huge shed in the back yard, and also a huge garage that I lined with shelving. We have plenty of storage space inside and do not have to worry about our basement flooding ever.

We did have the termite problem, but now 2 years later thanks to Terminix we are Termite free. We have their complete system around our house and have not had one problem since.

The neighbors in levittown are like no other town I have ever been in. They care about the people that live next door to them. When I am not home, 1 neighbor takes in my garbage can and my recycling can, Another neighbor, shovels our walk......Everyone is so friendly and it is really nice....I never had this anywhere I ever lived before on long island.

The schools in our area are excellent. If we expand our house and stay in levittown in the future, then I know our kids will have an excellent education. Danielle also teaches in the school district.

It really bothers me when people who do not live in Levittown or know about how levittown used to be 30 years ago or so talk badly about the town. Levittown of the present and the future is made up of people that have been here for 30 plus years, and very young couples and families that are just starting out. There are also the families that buy the homes because they are less expensive and build up to make the house to what they want right away, and that is fine with me. They are only improving our area.

I am glad that the people that talk so badly about Levittown will not be moving in anytime soon. I love this town and if people think that its not a great place then Levittown will reamin the best kept secret on Long Island.

We almost bought in Bellmore before....we bought in levittown. I have no doubts about buying here and I know we made a great decision.

We have everything we need here. Danielle is close to her job, we have excellent schools, tons of shopping and many new stores opening in the area, including a Brand New Fridays which will be like 3 minutes from our house.

We also have Waldbaums within 6 blocks, Stop and Shop within 10 blocks and also King Kullen within 8 blocks from our house......Everything is convenient to us, including the seaford oyster bay, southern state, and the wantagh Parkway.

I could go on for hours about Levittown.

Re: What can you tell me about Levittown?

DH and I live in Levittown. He is a grad of Island Trees HS and very involved in the community. His parents still live in the same house they bought in 1969. Their house has a basement.

We bought our house a year ago and totally love it!!!!! We almost bought a ranch style house, but due to problems with the seller, we backed out. We now have a lovely cape with a nice size backyard. We do not have a basement, which is fine with me. I hear so many horror stories about flooded basements after a storm. We plan to expand the second floor in a few years, but right now, it's fine for us.

Our neighbors are really nice!!!! A few months ago after a night of snowing, my next door neighbor rang the bell and invited us to her daughter's birthday party. She didn't want her family driving out in the bad weather, so she had all this food and no party! So she invited us and some other neighbors....It was great!!!!

We're zoned for MacArthur HS and Gardiners Ave elementary school. As for shopping, there's Walbaums, Stop & Shop, Target on Hempstead tpk. We use the Wantagh or Bethpage LIRR station.

My next door neighbor has lived here for over 50 years!!!! It can't be all bad.

I say give it serious consideration.

Re: What can you tell me about Levittown?

I don't live in Levittown, but I spent many summers as a kid coming down from upstate to spend time w/my Aunt & Uncle. They lived in Levittown for almost 50 years. I always found a real sense of community. My Aunt was elderly, lived by herself & was in a wheelchair, her neighbors would check on her daily, always invite her to BBQs, etc.

Re: What can you tell me about Levittown?

There is also parts of Levittown in the East Meadow school district. In this area there are some pretty big split levels with basements. There are also areas in Wantagh schools. I have yet to find an area of Levittown that is run down. I cover that area at work and i realy like it.

Re: What can you tell me about Levittown?

I lived in the "Plainedge" area of Levittown for 25 years. That is the only area that have basements. There are two different school districts there; Levittown(which has different middle and high schools) and Island Trees. I went to IT my whole life. There is no "downtown" everything is right there already. I had friends that went to Division and Macarthur and those schools are good too (though I'm partial to IT, lol). Unless you get lucky, most yards are on the small side. Also, the only houses in Levittown that have basements are not "Levitt" houses; the Levitt houses were built around those. If you have any specific questions feel free to FM me.

ETA: Great thing about a Levitt house is that they have such a straight forward floor plan that it's easy to make it into whatever your dream house looks like!Chat Icon
