Ohhhhh found this at the very end of the law:

For maximum protection, children under the age of 12 should sit in the rear seat of the vehicle.

Here you go:

Are children required by law to sit in the back seat?

Although New York does not have a law preventing children from sitting in the front seat, it is highly recommended that all children age 12 and under ride properly restrained in the back seat. Researchers estimate that just by putting a child in the back seat instead of the front seat reduces the chance of injury and death by more than 30%.

The nurse is on crack:

Every child under age 16 in the vehicle must use a safety restraint. If under age four, he or she must be properly secured in a federally-approved child safety seat that is attached to a vehicle by a safety belt or universal child restraint anchorage (LATCH) system. A child under age four who weighs more than 40 pounds may be restrained in a booster seat with a lap and shoulder belt. A child of age 4, 5, or 6, must use a booster seat with lap and shoulder belt or a child safety seat (The child and safety restraint system must meet the height and weight recommendations of the restraint manufacturer).

Then call her and tell her that the precinct said SHE should be in a child safety seat in the back, adn that she'll have to do something about that or else there's a 500 dollar fine and 2 points on her license.Chat Icon

And it'll go like this:

Hi, we'd like to talk to you about something important today. Are you stupid? Do you know someone who is stupid? If so, you should listen carefully. Many New Yorkers are misled each year, thinking they are smart. We're getting the word out there that you're not. And if you're not, like we know you aren't, then you need to be sitting in a stupid person restraint seat at all times. Failure to comply with stupid person restraint safety seats will lead to a hefty fine and points on your forehead that warn people just how stupid you are.Chat Icon

this sentence:

The driver and front-seat passengers aged 16 or older can be fined up to $50 each for failure to buckle up.

This just means that the driver and anybody over 16 will be fined for not wearing a seat belt. If under 16 and not wearing a seatbelt (regardless of where they are sitting), the driver gets the fine.

I think the doctor isn't reading the law correctly. It doesn't say anywhere that there is an age restriction to sit in the front seat. There isn't even a law preventing you from putting a carseat or booster seat in the front. It's not recommended, but not against the law.

Re: Can someone clarify this for me...

They can't make it illegal for a parent to own a pickup truck or a sportscar. We had both DC in the front seat of my pickup on rare occasions. If the car was in the shop, we had to use the truck, and the infant seat only fits in the front, not the small rear seats. Now that they are in the convertible seats, they can be in the back, but I did have them in the front.

I can't see a law being passed that FORCES a lot of people to buy a new car.

I definitely see the recommendation, though. It makes sense that it's safer in the back, but it can't be a law....
